Bronson

The Psychiatric Scene 0:00-2:10

Bronson - Psychiatric Hospital Party YouTube

Mis-en-scene
In the hospital room there is dim lighting which signifies that the area has mystery and secrets. Dimmed lighting also creates a sinister mood for the setting. There is little or no decoration on the walls and only a plain white colour which we associate with hospitals. The costumes used are dated in 80s fashion with the light blue collar t-shirts and brown woollen jumpers. The guards have plain white shirts and trousers, The white costume signifies that they are guards and not patients. The costumes help the audience establish when the story is set and what time the plot is based around.

Lighting
Looking at the establishing shot we can see where all the lighting is from the ceiling where there is natural light which highlights the seating area and artificial light which is coming from a number of lamps on the ceiling. The lighting used during the disco is quite dark with strobe lighting to create a nightlife feel in the hospital. The natural light shines brightly on the seating area which at the end of the scene is used as a spotlight on Bronson to signify his importance and to emphasise his facial expressions.

Camera Angles
At the start of the scene they use an establishing shot of the whole room which shows every character and tells the audience where the location is. We can see everything that is going on in the scene from the guards, to the dancing patients, the old man in his chair waving his arms and the empty seating area. The next camera shot used is a medium wide shot which clearly shows a patient in the for front of the picture making the audience watch him instead of the background where the main character is. As Bronson has moved to the forefront of the picture the camera changes Bronsons point of view of the pale wall with the caged exit, this shows where Bronson aims to go and escape the mental hospital. The next camera shot is tracking Bronson on his struggle to the exit and its shows his slow movement. They then use another point of view where we see the camera move towards the guards who tell Bronson to move away and this signifies who is in control and who has the power.

Camera angles
The next camera angle is a wide shot of the guard point to where he wants Bronson to go. By using a wide shot we see the whole sequence of Bronson slowly moving to his guided seat. We can also see the dancing in the background. It then goes back to the original establishing shot of the room when Bronson sits down. The final camera shot is of a close up on Bronsons face but also at a high angle to signify Bronsons morale and to signify that Bronson is inferior and powerless.
