General Objectives:
• This topic is about understanding what social
institutions are, their relationship with individual and
the collective membership of societies, and their effect
on how individuals and groups conduct their
relationships with one another.
Goals: to help students …
1. understand how social institutions contribute to how
social life is organized and conducted.
2. understand how social institutions are instrumental in
the achievement and maintenance of social order
Students are expected to be able to:
• define what social institutions are and discuss their
essential characteristics and elements;
• discuss different social institutions and the issues
that concern them; and
• discuss how these social institutions affect the lives
of people.

Definition:
institutions
• Social Institution is a particular segment
of a society where social relations and
social roles exist.
• Social Institutions are units of society
where behavior patterns are shared and
played by the members. The goal of
social institutions is the satisfaction of the
basic group needs.
• It may also be defined as a relatively
permanent structure of social patterns,
roles and relations of people for the
purpose of satisfying basic social needs.
• Social Institutions are the primary
transmitters of culture and the
most important agents that
determine the character and
personality of the members of
society.
The Family being the smallest unit
of society plays a very important
role in the development of
personality and values formation.
It is the first social institution that
socializes the individual and
provides his basic social needs,
where the mother is the primary
agent of socialization.
In the absence of the father at home
due to his work, the mother takes
the the authority in the family, this
type of family is called
Matricentric family.

Government
• The government exists for
the benefit of the people.
• It promotes the physical,
economic, socio-cultural
well-being of the people.
• It adminsters social justice,
promotes progress and
development, security and
protection.
• Likewise, it preserves the
State from internal and
external threat.
• Business Economy
