 GEOSYNTHETICS
-geo=earth/soil, synthetics= man-made

-a planar products manufactured from polymeric

material used with soil, rock, earth, or other geotechnical
engineering related material as an integral part of a
manmade project, structure, or system.

• geotextiles, geogrids, geonets, geomembranes,

• geosynthetic clay liners, geocells, geopipes,
• geofoam, geocomposites
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
1. Geotextiles
-consists of synthetic fibers rather than natural
ones like cotton, wool, and silk

- continuous sheets of woven, non-woven,

knitted or stitched-bonded fibers or yarns

-flexible and permeable and generally have the

appearance of a fabric.
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
 Knitted and stitched
 Woven geotextile
geotextile

 Non-oven geotextile

2. Geogrid
-stiff or flexible polymer grid-like sheets with large
apertures
-are either stretched in one or two directions or made on
weaving machinery by unique methods
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
3. Geonets
-stiff polymer net-like with in plane openings
-formed by two sets of coarse, parallel, extruded
polymeric strands intersecting at a constant acute angle, and
has a rhombus shaped apertures.

Biplanar Tri-planar

4. Geomembranes
-sheets of rubber or plastic material, can also be
polymeric or asphaltic or a combination thereof
-are relatively impermeable when compared to soils or
geotextiles.

 2 Categories:
 Extruded
-material used is high dense polyethylene
 Calendered
-material used are polyvinylchloride, chlorosulphonated
polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene and polypropylene

6. Geosynthetic Clay Liners

-prefabricated bentonite clay liners incorporated bet.
Geotextiles and/or geomembranes.
-the bonding of the layers are done with stitching, needling
and/or chemical adhesives.

6. Geocells
-are 3-dimensional honeycomb like structure, made of strip of
polymer sheet, it is also similar to geogrids and geotextiles but
have depth.
-were manufactured from novel polymeric alloy called Neoloy.
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
7. Geopipes
-perforated or solid wall polymeric pipes
-plastic pipe (smooth or corrugated with or without
perforations) placed beneath the ground surface and
subsequently backfilled
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
8. Geofoams
-is manufactured into large lightweight blocks or slabs by
polymeric expansive process. They are large but extremely light
material with gas filled cells.
 TYPES OF GEOSYNTHETICS
9. Geocomposites
-are combination of two different types of geosynthetics
to take advantage of each.
-prepared to extract all the major properties of the
geosynthetics into a single unit with minimum cost.
That’s all.
