ORIGIN OF PHILIPPINES
1. PLATE TECTONIC THEORY
formulated by German scientist, Dr. Fritjoh Voss in 1976. According to
him, the Philippines is not part of mainland Asia but located directly above a
fault in the earth's crust and because of the earthquake the landmass was
pushed from the ocean floor and the Philippine islands emerged from the
bottom of the ocean.

2. CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY

This theory is based on the study of German geologist and meteorologist
Alfred Wegener. He claimed that the Philippines came from the Pangea of the
big continent 200 million years ago and because of the changes in the
environment, this big continent was divided into two continents, the Laurasia
and Gondwana land.
ORIGIN OF PHILIPPINES
3. VOLCANIC ERUPTION THEORY
This theory was based on the study of geologist
Bailey Willis. According to his study, the Philippines
was a result of the eruption of volcanoes under the
Pacific ocean. The pile of magma and lava from the
volcanic eruption 200 million years ago created the
different islands comprising the Philippine
archipelago.
ORIGIN OF FILIPINOS
A. Wave of Migration Theory
- According to Henry Otley
Beyer, the founder of the
Anthropological Society at the
University of the Philippines, the
Filipinos came from the different
waves of migration of different
people in Asia.

Anthropologists who contradicted this claim
because of the following reasons:

• The only basis that he used in his history was

the piece of the jaw that the people of
Cagayan Cave left and this remain was
discovered by Dr. Robert Fox.
• The theory that the Filipino came from the
Australoid Sakai/Negritos was first used by the
Spaniards in the writing of J. Montano. And
writings of J. Montano had no anthropological
basis.

B. The Local Origin or
Core Population Theory
- The student of Dr.
Henry Otley Beyer, F. Landa
Jocano formulated the
theory. According to this
theory, the Filipino had the
original inhabitant and they
also underwent the process
of evolution and adaptation
to their environment.
1st Phase of Evolution According
to F. Landa Jocano
• The Formative Phase
- This was the period of existence of the
Tabon Man. The inhabitants used stone tools
like stone flakes in the early period of the
Formative Phase which were roughly made,
unpolished however, towards the end of the
phase they were able to develop stone tools.

by Dr. Robert Fox

2nd Phase of Evolution According to
F. Landa Jocano
• The Incipient Phase
- From the stone stools, the inhabitants
learned to use metals so the industry was not
limited to farming and ceramics, but also the
emergence of mining industry, weaving, and the
more developed pottery. The evidence of this
phase was the discovery of the Maitum jars
(Saranggani) by Dr. Eusebio Dizon.

3rd Phase of Evolution According to
F. Landa Jocano
• The Emergent Stage
- This phase was characterized by the
appearance of a well-defined social organization,
the existence of accessible maritime
transportation, and active inter and outer island
trading. The evidence of the existence of this
phase was the archeological findings in Butuan,
the strip of metals with inscription, and the
Calatagan (Batangas) pottery.
ORIGIN OF FILIPINOS
The Period During the Pre-Historic Era in the
Philippines

1. The Paleolithic Era (Old Stone Age) 2.5 million years

- The discovery of the Callao Man & Tabon Man was
evidence of this era in the Philippines.
- A team of archaeologists led by Dr. Armand Mijares
of the University of the Philippines-Diliman has confirmed
that a foot bone they discovered in Callao Cave in Cagayan
province was at least 67,000 years old. Tabon Man’s
remains were a relatively young 50,000 years old.

2. The Neolithic Era (New Stone Age) 10,000 BC
a. The Early Neolithic Era- the people in the community used a
rough stone with ground blades or cutting edges. The
evidence of these tools was found in Bataan, Rizal, and
Bulacan provinces.

b. The Middle Neolithic Era

- the people used the ax-as type, the ridge type, and tangled
butt tools made of stone and hinge tools made from the giant
clam. And also during this period, there is evidence of the
domestication of animals and development in farming. The
evidence of the existence of this stage was the discoveries

c. The late New stage
- Using of hard materials capable of being
polished
- The use of sawing and drilling as new
technique in making tools
- Evindences show in Batangas Province and the
development in making pottery
ORIGIN OF FILIPINOS
C. THE OUT TAIWAN
THEORY
- formulated by
Peter Bellwood. His study
was based on the pottery
used by the
Austronesians and the
language of the people in
the region.
• The people in the southeast Asia did not develop
their agriculture within their boundary however
the idea about agriculture came from the early
inhabitants from Taiwan which travelled to the
Philippines, Indonesia, and Madagascar.
• Increasing population of the farmers from China
so they needed to find a land for their
agriculture
• The skills and knowledge of the Austronesians in
maritime and agriculture became their
advantage in their search for the new land
