1. GENERAL INFORMATION

MagazineFactory is an interactive tool for developing and producing web magazines for various educational and
communications purposes. School classes in different countries can produce a webmagazine together and learn
how to write journalistic articles. This user guide is for students who will act as the magazine’s journalists.

Please read this guide before starting to use MagazineFactory.

MagazineFactory projects are always lead by a teacher/responsible adult. One teacher acts as the magazine’s
chief editor and is responsible for the magazine and his own editorial staff. Other teachers will act as editors and
lead their own editorial group under chief editor’s supervision.

2. JOURNALIST’S RESPONSIBILITIES

As a journalist you will produce information and articles to your magazine. You will learn the publishing process;
how an article goes through editing before being published on the magazine. As a journalist you have the
responsibility to write accurate information and enjoyable articles.

Remember copyrights when creating articles or image articles, you can’t use written or photographic material
without the copyright holders permission. Students can use free internet image galleries (like www.freefoto.com)
for educational purposes.

3. HOW TO START

Your teacher will create the magazine and user initials to your class. You receive the user initials via e-mail or
the teacher will deliver the initials some other way. You will receive a username, a password and a link to the
magazine. You need the username and password to log into the magazine.

Either click the magazine’s link in the e-mail or write the magazine’s internet address in your browser. The
magazine’s address is in the form: http://www2.edu.fi/magazinefactory/magazines/yourmagazinenamehere

When the magazine’s frontpage opens, click the Log in –link in the top navigation bar.

5. ARTICLES

Click the Articles – create an article -link in the left for creating your article.

1. Select the group your article belongs to. For example a sport result to article group "Sport". If a suitable
group is not available, suggest your editor to create one.

2. Give the article a title and write a short description of the article. The description text will be shown to
the user, so write an interesting description so that the user will wan to read the whole story.

3. Write the article content in the text editor. You can modify the font and text settings and insert
pictures. Please note that you need to upload the picture to the magazine's picture gallery before you
can add it to your article.

Picture 6: the text editor

The text editor has different commands to help you. You can add a picture to the article (the picture needs to
be in the image gallery first), you can underline words, create links and format the texts visual appearance.
You can see the commands by moving the cursor on top of the small icon.

4. Click Save when your text is ready.

5. After saving the text you can send it to your editor, who will read it before publishing. You don't need to
send the text right away. You can modify as many times as you need before sending it to your editor. If you
change the article after you have sent it to the editor, the changes will not be visible to the editor.

6. CREATE AN IMAGE ARTICLE

Image article is a series of ten pictures with short text descriptions. You upload the pictures from your computer,
one picture per page. After you have uploaded the picture and written the Image text, click the Add new page
link below.

You can add new pages between pages. After you have finished the picture article, click Save and after preview,
click Publish. Journalists can’t publish image articles. Like written articles, the image article will be sent to chief
editor and editor for approval and publishing.
