allow same-sex couples to marry in the
First State.
The vote in the Senate Executive
Committee was scheduled to take
place after Blade deadline and eight

either co-sponsored the measure or
said they will vote for it when it goes to
the full Senate in the coming days. Visit

Mizeur 2nd in
gubernatorial straw poll
Maryland state Del. Heather Mizeur
(D-Montgomery County) last week came
in second place in a 2014 gubernatorial
straw poll that took place during the
Western Maryland Democratic Summit
in Hagerstown.
The Washington Post reported the
Takoma Park Democrat received 37 votes,
compared to Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown
who received 62 votes. Attorney General
Doug Gansler came in third with 25 votes.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman
received 17 votes, while Congressman
C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger came in
fth with one vote.
Fewer than 150 people voted in
the straw poll, but Mizeur told the
Washington Blade on Monday she feels
it is an indication of the support she said
she continues to receive as she mulls a
gubernatorial campaign.
This strong, early show of support
from western Marylanders re-afrms
what Ive heard across the state we
love Maryland and are proud to live
here, and we want it to be even better,
she said.
Mizeur, a lesbian, told the Blade in an
exclusive interview last November she is
taking a very serious look at running
to succeed Gov. Martin OMalley in
2014. She reported in a campaign
nance report in January that she raised
more than $248,000 for her potential
gubernatorial campaign between Jan.
12, 2012, and Jan. 9 of this year. Brown
reported he raised $1,247,811.80 in
cash and in-kind contributions during
the same period, while Gansler netted
$1,236,284.96.
Ulman reported he raised
$1,139,945.82.
Theres a real desire for new vision
and leadership, and thats why Im
taking a look at the governors race,
Mizeur said.

GLLU supervisor back
to full duty status
Sgt. Matt Mahl, the acting supervisor
of the D.C. police departments Gay
and Lesbian Liaison Unit, resumed
his full police duties in late March
after the department suspended his
police powers for undisclosed reasons
sometime last year.
I can only say he is back to full
duty, police spokesperson Gwendolyn
Crump told the Blade on Monday. We
cannot comment further on a personnel
matter.
Mahl continued to work at the GLLU
ofce in Dupont Circle during the
suspension period but activists who
know him noticed he was wearing
civilian clothes and no longer had a gun
and badge.
Sgt. Mahl is on non-contact
status pending the outcome of an
administrative matter, Crump told the
Blade in March.
D.C. area attorney Dale Edwin
Sanders, who sometimes represents
District police ofcers on legal matters,
said he knew nothing about Mahls
situation. But he said the department
suspends police powers for many
reasons, including complaints by
citizens that an ofcer used excessive
force in making an arrest.
These types of complaints are very
frequent, he said. It is not permanent.
It is subject to investigation.
LGBT activists who know Mahl have
praised his work at the GLLU, calling him
a dedicated and hard-working ofcer
who works well with the community.
Mahl was greeted by activists on
Saturday, April 27, when he and other
GLLU ofcers visited the LGBT Youth
Pride festival in Dupont Circle.

Youth Pride draws 500 to Dupont Circle
More than 500 LGBT youth and their supporters turned out at Dupont
Circle on April 27, for Youth Pride Day, an annual event organized by the
Youth Pride Alliance. Under a bright cloudless sky, those attending the event
had the option of listening to music and watching drag performances and
other entertainers, including a Latino dance group, from a stage.
About 40 local and national LGBT organizations and D.C. government
agencies, including the Mayors Ofce of GLBT Affairs and the D.C. Ofce
of Human Rights, set up tables in a large circle around the Dupont Circle
fountain, sharing information and literature with passersby.
Wade Davis, a former NFL player who came out as gay last year, delivered
the events keynote speech. Davis urged adults to do what you can to
support LGBT youth. He called on LGBT youth attending the event to close
your eyes and imagine a world free of prejudice against LGBT people and
to do everything you possibly can to make such a world become a reality.

LGBT Center surfaces in FBI
interrogation of Corkins
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Hours before his arrest last August
for shooting a security guard in the
arm in the lobby of the anti-gay Family
Research Council headquarters in
downtown Washington, Herndon,
Va., resident Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28,
says he told his parents he needed to
use their car to drive to the D.C. LGBT
Community Center, where he said he
worked as a volunteer.
According to a 22-page transcript of
an FBI interview of Corkins on the day
of his arrest on Aug. 15, 2012 which
prosecutors released in a court ling last
week Corkins told FBI agents that
instead of going to the LGBT Center
he drove the family car to the East Falls
Church Metro station.
From there he said he took the Metro
to the Gallery Place station and walked
to the FRC building at 801 G St., N.W.,
with the intention of killing as many
people as possible.
I wanted to kill the people in
the building and smear a Chicken-
l-A sandwich on their face, the FBI
transcript quotes Corkins as saying.
Police and prosecutors said the
heroic action by the unarmed security
guard, who wrestled Corkins to the
oor and took away the gun after being
shot in the arm, prevented Corkins from
reaching the upper oors of the FRC
building where at least 50 employees
were working at their desks.
Corkins pleaded guilty in February to
three felony charges, including committing
an act of terrorism while armed, assault
with intent to kill while armed, and
interstate transportation of a rearm and
ammunition. He faces a possible maximum
sentence of 70 years in prison.
He had been scheduled to be
sentenced Monday, April 29. But U.S.
District Court Judge Richard W. Roberts
agreed on April 22 to a request by
Corkins attorney to postpone the
sentencing to give the attorney, David
W. Bos, more time to review the status
of Corkins mental health.
Citing information not previously
disclosed, Bos stated in a motion
seeking the postponement that Corkins
had been the subject of a 72-hour civil
commitment in February 2012, which
led to the mental health treatment the
defendant was receiving at the time he
committed the instant offense.
In his interview with the FBI agents,
Corkins hedged about whether he
was committed or entered a treatment
facility voluntarily, but said the treatment
took place during a time when he was
living in San Francisco.
I went to seek help and I got
charged with a 51-50, he said.
Whats a 51-50? one of the FBI
agents asked him.
Its if they think you are a danger to
yourself or to others, Corkins replied.
Corkins said he left San Francisco and
moved back to his parents home in
Herndon around April of 2012.
The fact that he purchased a handgun
and large quantities of ammunition from a
Virginia gun store in August just six months
after being committed for a mental health
condition linked to possible danger to
others comes at a time when gun control
opponents continue to oppose President
Obamas proposed legislation aimed at
requiring stricter background checks for
gun purchasers.
In what appears to be a calm, matter-
of-fact discussion, Corkins told two FBI
agents who conducted the interview that he
disagreed with the FRCs anti-gay positions,
including its statement of support for the
Chick-l-A restaurant president, who said
he opposes same-sex marriage.
Corkins said in the interview that he
bought 15 Chick-l-A sandwiches one
day earlier, the same day he practiced
shooting his recently purchased pistol at
a gun range in Chantilly, Va. He said he
carried the gun, three magazines with
15 rounds of ammunition each, and the
sandwiches in the backpack he brought
to the FRC building.
I consider myself a political activist, he
told the FBI agents. [S]o I was going to
use that as kind of a statement, he said
of his plans to smear the sandwiches in the
faces of the people he planned to shoot.
Corkins mentioned his afliation with
the LGBT Center at the beginning of his
FBI interrogation.
Were you home when you got up in
the morning today? one of the agents
asked Corkins.
Yeah, I was at home, he replied.
Just walk us through when you got up,
the transcript quotes the agent as saying.
Uh, lets see. I got up in the morning,
Corkins replied. I told my parents, I
volunteer at the D.C. Center, the LGBT
center. So I told my parents I was going
down there today and that I needed the
car, he told the FBI agents.
The night before I had loaded three
magazines full of bullets, I planned on
going down to the [FRC] building ,
Corkins told the agents.
At the time of the FRC shooting,
ofcials with the D.C. LGBT Center
said Corkins volunteered there as
a front desk clerk in 2011. Center
ofcials joined local and national LGBT
leaders in condemning Corkins actions,
saying they support his prosecution to
the fullest extent of the law.
Center ofcials said at the time that
Corkins showed no signs that he could be
capable of committing an act of violence
but gave no further details of Corkins
relationship with the Center other than
that he was a part-time volunteer.
D.C. Center Executive Director David
Mariner told the Blade early Monday
that the Center would have no further
comment on the matter other than the
statement Mariner issued last August at
the time of the FRC shooting incident.
I was shocked to hear that someone
who has volunteered with the D.C.
Center could be the cause of such a
tragic act of violence, Mariner said
in that statement. No matter the
circumstances, we condemn such
violence in the strongest terms possible.
We hope for a full and speedy recovery
for the victim and our thoughts are with
him and his family.
The Ofce of the U.S. Attorney for the
District of Columbia, which is prosecuting
the case, submitted the FBI interview
transcript as one of several exhibits
attached to a 32-page sentencing
memorandum led in court on April 19.
The U.S. Attorneys ofce also
submitted as an exhibit a full video of
the FBI interview with Corkins. The video
became part of the public court record
and is available for viewing and copying
on the federal court systems website.
The Family Research Council promptly
posted an excerpt of the video on its
own website that shows Corkins telling
the FBI agents he selected the FRC as
a target after seeing it listed as a hate
group on the website of the Southern
Poverty Law Center, a national civil
rights organization.
In an April 25 press release, FRC
President Tony Perkins called the SPLCs
decision to list FRC as a hate group
a reckless labeling [that] has led to
devastating consequences.
Added Perkins, Because of its hate
group labeling, a deadly terrorist
had a guide map to FRC and other
organizations. Our team is still dealing
with the fallout of the attack that was
intended to have a chilling effect on
organizations that are simply ghting
for their values.
SPLC has said it lists FRC as a hate
group based, among other things,
on what it says are FRCs false and
defamatory claims linking homosexuality
and LGBT people to pedophilia. SPLC
ofcials have criticized Perkins for
misrepresenting their position, saying
they never label an organization as a
hate group based on its political views
or public policy positions.
The sentencing memorandum
outlines the governments reasons
for asking Judge Roberts to sentence
Corkins to 45 years in prison.
The defendant, the lone gunman
and perpetrator of this attempted
massacre, had the malicious intent and
engaged in the requisite planning and
effort necessary to achieve his purpose,
the memo says. Fortunately, he was
thwarted by the heroic intervening
actions of Leonardo Johnson, a building
manager/security guard who was
seriously injured as a result.
Johnson, who was unarmed, is
credited with tackling Corkins seconds
after Corkins pulled out a 9mm handgun
from a backpack he was carrying
and pointing it at Johnson. Johnson
sustained a gunshot wound to the arm
as he wrestled Corkins to the oor of
the lobby of the FRC building and took
possession of the gun.
D.C. police arrived on the scene
minutes later and arrested Corkins. The
FBI also became involved in the case.
D.C. police and the FBI said Corkins
told authorities that had he gotten
past Johnson, he would have taken the
elevator to the buildings upper oors
and opened re on the 50 or more FRC
employees working that day.

U.S. govt reverses itself,
grants visa for appearance
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The U.S. government this week
reversed itself and granted a visa to
the daughter of Cuban President Ral
Castro that will allow her to attend a
gay rights conference this weekend in
Philadelphia.
Equality Forum said last week the
State Department had denied Mariela
Castros request to attend its annual
event on May 4, where she had been
scheduled to participate in a panel
and receive an award for her efforts to
advance LGBT rights in Cuba. Equality
Forum Executive Director Malcolm
Lazin on Tuesday conrmed to the
Washington Blade that Castro has
received a visa to travel to Philadelphia.
She will arrive in the city on Friday, and
leave on Sunday.
Mariela Castro, executive director
of the Cuban National Center for Sex
Education (CENESEX,) has spearheaded
a number of campaigns over the last
decade to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS
on the island and promote acceptance
of LGBT people.
She successfully lobbied the Cuban
government to begin offering free sex-
reassignment surgery under the countrys
national health care system in 2010.
Mariela Castro, whose uncle is former
Cuban President Fidel Castro, has also
spoken out in support of marriage rights
for gays and lesbians in Cuba.
CENESEX has scheduled a series of
events across the country May 7-18 to
commemorate the annual International
Day Against Homophobia, but some
Cuban LGBT advocates remain critical
of the government and Mariela Castro
herself. They include Leannes Imbert
Acosta of the Cuban LGBT Platform,
who claims authorities detained her last
September as she left her Havana home
to bring materials to CENESEX on a
planned exhibit on forced labor camps
to which the government sent more than
25,000 gay men and others deemed unt
for military services during the 1960s.
Lazin conceded to the Washington
Blade during an interview last week that
Cuba is not a perfect nation.
There are those who are being
critical of necessary changes within
Cuba [should be] given the right to
express those views of both generally
and to their government, he said.
That to me is what freedom of speech
and freedom of assembly is all about. As
a country that has pioneered democracy
and champions democracy, the fact that
we would not allow Mariela Castro to
come to Philadelphia for a civil rights
summit and open herself to questions
from the public and the press on LGBT
rights in Cuba to me is a sorry day for
the country I love.
Last week, Lazin said the State
Department issued a visa to Castro that
allowed her to attend meetings at the
United Nations in New York City. He said
the U.S. government refused to allow
her to travel to Philadelphia to attend
Equality Forum, a move that triggered
national media attention. That decision
was reversed on Monday.
The Equality Forum is an annual
Philadelphia event aimed at advancing
LGBT rights. It includes panel
discussions, art exhibits, parties and
more events and concludes Sunday.
Fridays lineup includes a panel of LGBT
elected ofcials and a national politics
panel featuring Victory Fund president
Chuck Wolfe and Blade editor Kevin
Naff, among others. Visit equalityforum.

Rhees group honors anti-gay lawmaker
NASHVILLE, Tenn. LGBT rights advocates have criticized former D.C.
Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee over her groups decision to honor a
Tennessee lawmaker who co-authored the states so-called Dont Say Gay bill.
Daily Kos on April 26 reported StudentsFirst chose state Rep. John Ragan
(R-Oak Ridge) as its 2012 reformer of the year in the Volunteer State.
Votesmart.org also notes StudentsFirst contributed $6,500 to the Republicans
2012 re-election campaign.
Ragans measure once again died in a Tennessee House subcommittee in March.
Rhee resigned as chancellor of the nations capitals public schools in 2010
after current D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray defeated then-Mayor Adrian Fenty in
the Democratic primary.
Colorado civil unions law takes effect
DENVER Hundreds of same-sex couples in the state capital and in
Boulder took advantage of Colorados civil unions law in the hours after it
took effect at midnight on Wednesday.
Gov. John Hickenlooper said in March before he signed the bill state Sens.
Pat Steadman and Lucia Guzman re-introduced earlier this year there is no
excuse that people shouldnt have all the same rights.
Its the beginning of the country changing, the governor said. A change
has gotten here. Its going to keep going. Its not going to stop in Colorado,
but Id like to think this is a crucial point.
The civil unions law took effect two decades after Colorado voters
approved a constitutional amendment that barred the state from enacting
anti-gay discrimination laws.
The U.S. Supreme Court struck it down in 1996.
Trans rights bill advances in New York
ALBANY, N.Y. The New York Assembly on Tuesday approved a bill that
would ban discrimination against transgender New Yorkers.
The 84-46 vote is the sixth time the chamber has approved the measure
known as the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act.
State Assemblyman Dick Gottfried (D-Manhattan,) who sponsored GENDA,
applauded the vote.
No New Yorker should fear losing a job or a home because of their gender
identity, he said.
Sixteen states and D.C. have enacted trans-inclusive non-discrimination
laws. New York City, Buffalo, Ithaca and Suffolk and Tompkins Counties are
among the New York jurisdictions that have passed these statutes.
S.C. lawmaker introduces pro-gay bill
COLUMBIA, S.C. State Rep. James Smith (D-Richland County) on
Tuesday introduced a bill that would add sexual orientation and gender
identity to South Carolinas employment anti-discrimination law.
All hardworking people in our state should have the chance to earn a living
and provide for themselves and their families, Ryan Wilson, executive director
of South Carolina Equality, said. Nobody should have to live in fear that they can
be legally red for reasons that have nothing to do with their job performance.
The Workplace Fairness Act is really about protecting South Carolinas
diverse workforce to make it competitive for businesses that are looking to
relocate to South Carolina, added Smith.

Living in
Never judge a
book by its cover.
HAVE IT
INSPECTED.
This years Point Foundation
scholarship winners
have big dreams
By KEITH LORIA
Pete Subkoviak, from Madison, Wis.,
entered the world female, but never
identied as anything other than male.
From the age of 3, he insisted he was
male. With the support of family and
friends, Subkoviak began to transition,
gained a second chance at life, and went
after it with passion.
As an undergraduate student at the
University of Wisconsin, Subkoviak spoke
often about the transgender community.
He interned for Sen. Russ Feingold
(D-Wis.) and pursued a career working on
state and federal HIV policy for the AIDS
Foundation of Chicago.
Subkoviak is among 76 LGBT students
awarded scholarships this year by the
Point Foundation, a national group
that raises money to fund scholarships
for LGBT students in need due to
unsupportive families. The Point
Foundation began offering scholarships
in 2001 and has supported hundreds of
students, with 145 alumni already earning
their higher education degrees. Many
have gone on to pursue their life goals,
including becoming doctors, lawyers and
lmmakers. Alex Morse, the countrys
youngest openly gay mayor, was a Point
scholar.
Subkoviak used his Point scholarship for
graduate school and plans to matriculate
from Johns Hopkins this month and work
on health care reform implementation
and other policies that will expand access
to health insurance.
The Point Foundation is not just
a scholarship program, but has also
given me the professional guidance and
emotional inspiration I need in order to
achieve my academic and post-graduate
aspirations, Subkoviak says. I really feel
driven forward by the fellow scholars, the
organization and all of its supporters.
While the nancial assistance that Point
offers has helped him a great deal, its
the networking and growth opportunities
that have played just as important a role
in his success. Each year, Point holds
a leadership conference where all the
scholars, alumni, staff and boards get
together to share experiences, support
each other and build skills.
Last year we held the event right here
in Washington D.C., and we were able to
speak with successful LGBT individuals
from all walks of life to hear their stories
and get advice on how we might follow
their path, Subkoviak says. The
foundation has seen some tremendous
growth over the past few years to the
point where they can now support 76
scholars. But the need out there is huge
so I hope that people continue to jump
on the Point bandwagon and they can
extend the opportunity to many more
LGBT youth.
One of the most important moments
of his time as a Point scholar happened
just a few weeks ago when Subkoviak had
the opportunity to meet Tyler Clementis
father and brother and spoke with them
about the importance of their work to
support LGBT youth. Clementi is the
gay Rutgers University student who
committed suicide after being secretly
recorded during a date with another man
by his roommate.
School can be tough for anyone,
but LGBT students can feel especially
alone. Point really understands the need
for LGBT students to have visible, overt
support, and they really work to makes
you feel like you have a large community
right there with you, rooting for you all
the way, he says. A few years ago, Point
and the Tyler Clementi Foundation joined
together to offer a scholarship in Tylers
nameone dedicated to ending the
bullying and isolation of LGBT youth in
educational settings.
With a background and interest in
public policy and politics, Subkoviak is
working on an innovative transgender
employment program.
As a transgender man myself, I became
distressed that very few organizations

How long have you been out and
who was the hardest person to tell?
I have been totally out since
2004, though most responded with,
Yes, I know. 2004 is when the
conversation was had with my father.
My father was the hardest to tell, in
large part because he is a Southern
Baptist deacon.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Harvey Milk. I keep a poster in my
cubicle with a picture of him and his
famous you gotta give em hope
quotation.
Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
The best place to be is not any
particular establishment; its wherever
my friends are. But if I have to choose
a bar I would say Freddies, which
makes everyone feel at home, even
our straight allies. And Freddie does
so much to support the community.
Describe your dream wedding.
A gathering of my family (biological
and drag) along with a few other
close friends to witness my partner
and I commit our lives to one another,
followed by a destination honeymoon
with a few of our closest friends being
invited to join us as we celebrate the
happiest day of our lives.
What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
Health care. I have had epilepsy
since I was 13 years old. I am fortunate
to have always had health insurance;
otherwise the medical bills would
have eaten me alive. A nation with
the riches we collectively have should
not have anyone being forced to
make decisions about whether to get
treatment or take medication based
upon their ability to pay.
What historical outcome
would you change?
In recent history I would have
changed the outcome of Bush v. Gore
and had Al Gore sworn in as the 43rd
president of the United States.
Whats been the most
memorable pop culture
moment of your lifetime?
The funeral of Princess Diana.
On what do you insist?
Being true to myself, and not caving
to the pressures of society to conform
to a particular image or stereotype.
I have been fortunate to have an
incredible drag mother, Shelby Blake
Stephyns, who taught me this.
What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
As you make your plans for the
weekend remember to join us for the
2013 Miss Gay Arlington pageant on
Friday at 8 p.m. at Freddies Beach Bar.
If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
Christian Panties: The Secret to
Good Livin
If science discovered a way to
change sexual orientation, what
would you do?
Say thanks but no thanks. I am just
ne the way God made me. Im going
to continue being true to myself.
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
I believe in God, however I dont
buy into the idea that any one
religious sect has a claim on what/
who God is. For me, God is a higher
power that transcends religious and
cultural divides and calls us each to be
the best we can be, and in the process
fullling his/her image of us.
Whats your advice for LGBT
movement leaders?
Stick to the basics. The goal is
equal rights for all. We are not after
gay rights, or some special treatment;
we are after equal rights for all, no
exceptions.
What would you walk
across hot coals for?
Lady Bunnys wigs I live for big
hair.
What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
Discrimination in any form annoys
me. Unfortunately too many times the
LGBT community falls into the trap of
discriminating against and among us.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Sordid Lives
Whats the most overrated social
custom?
Most all of them be true to you.
What trophy or prize
do you most covet?
Ive never really set my life goals
around trophies or prizes. That being
said winning the title of Miss Gaye
Zodiac (D.C.) was a great honor, but
RuPaul if you are reading this Id love
to headline your next tour.
What do you wish
youd known at 18?
The freedom that being true to
ones self brings.
Why Washington?
A job that pays the bills!
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
When Daniel L. Hays moved to the Washington area in 2006 to take a job
as a legislative analyst with the U.S. Department of Labor, he thought the
drag hed done back in his native Missouri was behind him.
And for his rst few years in D.C., that was the case.
I called my drag family in, said, Heres all my stuff, and they basically
took it all. I thought I was done, Hays says. I just didnt think Id ever do it
again. But I met up with the Bottoms clan and they had seen photos of what
Id done before so thats when it started up again in about 2010.
Known these days as Muffy Blake Stephyns she had different last
names in different iterations Hays says drag is both a way to unwind and
give something back.
I love that I can be involved and bring awareness to other groups
through charity shows, he says.
Thats exactly how it started with his work with the Arlington Gay &
Lesbian Alliance (AGLA). The group has its Miss Gay Arlington pageant
tonight at 8 p.m. at Freddies Beach Bar (555 23rd Street, Arlington; $10
cover) where contestants will be judged in several categories in an event
dubbed The Glittery Rainbow Connection. Reigning Miss Gay Arlington
Stardust will be honored and a prize package valued at $900 is at stake.
Details are available at agla.org.
Miss Gay Arlington started in 2011. Hays, crowned in January as Miss Gay
Zodiac in the Academy of Washington, says its a way to increase awareness
and activities of AGLA events with a different demographic of people.
Hays, 38, and his partner Patrick Frieslander, live in Old Town Alexandria
with their two cats Xena and Cleo. He enjoys politics, drag, singing,
antiques, travel and LGBT activism in his free time.

Dance legends time abroad
explored in new work
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Isadora Duncans spectacular life
is often reduced to a cautionary tale:
long, owing scarves and convertibles
dont mix. But theres much more to the
glamorous mother of modern dance than
her ungraceful death and Word Dance
Theater, a D.C.-based cross disciplinary
company dedicated to carrying forth
Duncans work, is doing its best to make
sure that the world knows it.
Word Dance Theater is joining forces
with Georgetown Universitys Davis
Performing Arts Center to present
Once Wild: Isadora in Russia,
a compelling slice from Duncans
groundbreaking legend.
Penned by Norman Allen, who is gay,
Once Wild reimagines Duncan and her
adopted daughter Irmas time in Russia
during the early days of the Bolshevik
revolution. It follows the American
dancers efforts to introduce iconoclastic
choreography to young Russian dancers;
the challenges they encountered
opening a dance school amidst a
background of sweeping social changes
and Isadoras tumultuous romance with
volatile Russian poet Sergei Esenin
(danced by Helen Hayes Award-winning,
out actor Philip Fletcher).
The story an original work based on
historic facts is told from Irmas point of
view. Because the production combines
both theater and dance, Allen says,
there are two Irmas on stage throughout
the show an older Irma who sits in a
wheelchair (Kimberly Schraf) delivering
all of the 80-minute works dialogue,
and company member Ingrid Zimmer
who silently dances as the younger Irma,
embodying the memories and essence
of Duncans choreography.
Once Wild isnt Allens rst foray into
the world of dance. Early in his career
he scored a big success with Nijinskys
Last Dance, a one-man show about the
legendary, gravity-defying Russian ballet
dancer. Hes also written a libretto for the
Washington Ballet. With Once Wild,
the dance and words are interwoven and
overlap, Allen says. As always with any
work, the toughest part was nding the
structure. How do you make sense of ve
years of historical tumult and two women
doing amazing things? (Director Derek
Goldman) and I have tried to make this
play a reliving rather than a looking back.
Old Irma speaks to young Irma. Its much
more alive this way.
Cynthia Word, Word Dance Theaters
artistic director and the shows
choreographer, plays Isadora.
Though Ive been interested in
Duncan for many years, dancing and
choreographing her work, this is the
rst time Ive ever portrayed her. Its a
big responsibility. Isadora, I think, would
only want that I dance my truest self.
Duncan, who died from a broken
neck at 49 in 1927 on the Cte dAzur
after her trademark long scarf became
entangled in the spokes of her chauffer-
driven Bugatti, was a genius who single
handedly altered the entire concept
of dance. Unlike classical ballet that
left audiences in awe, she preferred
organic, relatable movement. Her work
incorporated timely issues. She danced
to music composed by the great masters
and incorporated themes of current
issues on stages stripped of unnecessary
spectacle. She and her dancers dressed
in comfortable, loose-tting tunics (the
theme song for the 70s sitcom Maude
describes Isadora as the rst bra
burner). I doubt she ever wore a bra to
start with, Word says.

New ways to support LGBT non-prots
Bolder Giving, along with the Kevin Mossier Foundation and Forward Motion, host
Give OUT Day on Thursday to mobilize and engage hundreds of organizations and
people to support the LGBT community.
For 24 hours, beginning midnight EST, people can donate to the LGBT community
through GiveOUTDay.org. Anyone can donate to particular groups or areas by
searching a group name, keyword, city or zip code.
Executive director of Bolder Giving, Jason Franklin said this day was created to
inspire people to support LGBT nonprots as well as providing organizations a way to
fundraise online. He explained that less than ve percent of the LGBT community gives
to LGBT nonprots. Most of the groups participating, he said, are smaller nonprots.
We are already hearing from smaller groups that this is the rst time they are
fundraising online, he says.
Of the 406 organizations that are registered for the day, 19 are from the Washington,
D.C. area, Franklin says. This includes both locally and nationally based groups.
The Give OUT Day model is based on the GiveMN fundraising venture, which
connects donors with nonprots, foundations and schools in Minnesota through an
online system. According to the website GiveMN.razoo.org, the project has raised
$70 million to date for thousands of groups in Minnesota.
For those who are participating in Give OUT Day, the minimum donation is $10 and
there is no maximum donation. The money will be designated for a specic LGBT
nonprot or program. Any LGBT nonprot can participate as long as they follow the
guidelines outlined on the website. If someone wants to fundraise but is not a non-
prot, that person can participate as a champion, where they will fundraise on behalf
of a nonprot. Organization receiving the greatest number of unique donors can be
in the running for additional prizes.
Bolder Giving is a nonprot based in New York, dedicated to motivate people to
give to a variety of causes. It launched LGBTQ Equality Initiative to inspire people to
give to the LGBT community, and Give OUT Day is part of this effort. They have also
set up programs for to promote environmental justice.
For additional information about the rules or to donate, visit giveout.razoo.com.
Comedian ROSS MATHEWS comes the area on
his tour to promote his book Man Up: Tales of
My Self Delusional Self-Condence.

Opera singer Cambridge
returns for fourth
appearance with WNO
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
D.C.-area native Alyson Cambridge
starts a triumphant homecoming this
weekend.
The former Arlington, Va., resident
she grew up here has made a splash
in the opera world with debuts at the
Metropolitan Opera and other top-
level houses in major productions. She
opens Saturday in the classic musical
Show Boat, the Kern/Hammerstein
masterpiece that will feature more than
100 singers, actors and dancers on the
Kennedy Center Opera House Stage
to tell the story of a troupe of riverboat
performers as they make their way
through the decades. It features classic
songs such as Ol Man River and
Cant Help Lovin Dat Man.
Cambridge stars as Julie. It will be
a busy month for the performer. Shell
also sing the National Anthem at the
Washington Nationals game on May
11. And on May 18, the production will
be broadcast live to Nationals Park for
WNOs annual Opera in the Outeld
event. Cambridge opened the show
in Chicago last year and says during a
lengthy phone chat from her home in
Manhattan, shes excited about bringing
it to D.C. (Cambridges comments have
been edited for length.)
BLADE: You still have family here?
CAMBRIDGE: Yes, my parents still live
in the same house I grew up in and my

BLADE: How is the art/theater/
music vibe different in New York versus
Washington?
CAMBRIDGE: New York is a completely
different world. Ive been there almost
11 years so it feels like home now and
Im used to a fast-paced life where Im
constantly being surrounded by artists,
singers, actors and dancers all the
time. The person behind the counter at
Starbucks is an aspiring acturess. Its just
in the culture that theres this assumption
that you have some ties to the arts. You
just feel that vibe all the time here.
BLADE: How was the Chicago run?
CAMBRIDGE: Really wonderful. It was
the rst time for many of us coming to
this show .. and my rst time doing a
musical like this on such a grand scale.
About half the cast is new for D.C. and
its been wonderful welcoming so many
newcomers to this production. I can
truly say, theres not a weak link in the
cast, everybody is just so strong. I
hope D.C. embraces the show as much
as Chicago did. We were completely
sold out there and it was the toughest
ticket in town to get.
BLADE: Most of your professional work
has been in opera. Are the lines blurring
between the opera world and musical
theater and if so, is that a good thing?
CAMBRIDGE: Ive seen a lot of change
just within the last four years or so. I did
Porgy and Bess in Washington in 2005
and came back in 2010 and the reception
was very different. Its considered a show
in the more operatic vein and was really
written for classically trained voices. Even
just a few years ago, people warned me,
Oh, be careful if you start with that,
people wont see you as a truly legit
opera singer, but I think what were
doing is really opening up these musical
worlds to different audiences and I think
its the perfect blend.

New French bistro in Logan
area off to remarkable start
By JONATHAN HOWARD
My excitement for Le Diplomate (1601
14th Street NW) has been building from
the moment that I heard that Philadelphias
Brilliant innovator Stephen Starr was
opening a French Bistro similar to his hugely
successful Parc, just feet from my house.
Once this 6.5 million dollar renovation was
completed, and I heard that reservations
for the restaurants preview were available
I was on the phone and secured one
immediately. At the end of our rst meal
our waitress let us know that brunch service
would be starting on Sunday, I made a
reservation instantaneously.
Part of the joy of going to a restaurants
soft opening is feeling the frenetic
energy coursing through the space.
The staff is a bit nervous, mistakes will
be made, you see people running to
the kitchen and at least one tray of food
is dropped lling the restaurant with
the cacophonous symphony of dishes
hitting the oor; but that is all expected,
and adds to the charm of a restaurants
rst service. A soft opening allows the
restaurant to work out the kinks, but as
a foodie it is an exciting night to be in a
restaurant, you dont expect perfection,
you dont even really expect all diners
to get food at the same time, all you
expect is excitement.
When I walked into Le Diplomate I was
magically transported to another place, a
beautiful Parisian bistro has transformed
this forgotten corner of 14th and Q. We
were seated in the center of this bustling
dining room. Our waitress approached
moments later to take our drink orders
and explain the menu. As I sat, instead
of looking at the menu I found myself
looking at gorgeous surrounding and
smiling faces. When our waitress returned
with our drinks I was caught off guard, but
I knew that I couldnt pass up a cheese
plate at a Parisian bistro, so I ordered that
and allowed the waitress to select the
three cheeses that would be placed on it.
We also ordered the Onion Soup Gratinee
and the mushroom tart. Everything on the
menu looked so good that I was nding it
hard to decide what to dine on.
When she returned to take our order,
I had narrowed it down to the steak au
poivre, the wild boar, or the duck breast,
but I was once again distracted when
she placed the cheese board on the
table. Three perfect, rich and powerful
cheeses were all I could think about so
I immediately dug in and began trying
them with the in-house baked baguette.
When she asked what I would be having
I was caught off guard and haphazardly
selected the Wild Boar pappardelle.
At rst I wasnt sure if I had made the
right decision, but when it arrived I was
pleasantly surprised by the perfectly al
dente noodles and the rich succulent
pieces of boar, it was truly satisfying.
The beef bourguignon was the standout
dish of the evening with the tender cuts
of beef simply melting in your mouth.
We were stuffed when it was time for
dessert but I couldnt break my rule
of always trying something from the
sweets menu, so we elected to share
the chocolate napoleon, which was a
sweet sweet and sweet avor combo,
that I particularly loved.
Brunch did not disappoint either, like
many brunches in the Logan area do.
Service was once again impeccable,
the cheese plate (with three different
cheeses) still fully captured my
attention, and the must try breakfast
breadbasket constituted the best
carbohydrates I have eaten all year. For
my entre I ordered steak and eggs, a
dish I regularly order and am generally
disappointed with. The story was
different at Le Diplomate however; a
juicy cut of steak accompanied my eggs
with their warm and runny yolks just as I
like them. I didnt even need hot sauce.
Le Diplomate has gotten off to a very
strong start. In a neighborhood that now
has new restaurants opening every couple
of weeks, and in my opinion, will see many
close; Le Diplomate is here to stay. Overall,
it is probably one of the best restaurants in
the Logan Circle area and I can see myself
being a regular there, especially as they add
breakfast and lunch to their daily offerings.
If you havent been one of the hundreds
gathering on the corner this past few weeks,
give Le Diplomate a try, I doubt you will be
disappointed. Kudos to Stephen Starr and
head chef Adam Schop for astounding
me with one of the smoothest restaurant
openings I have witnessed.
Everyone expects rough spots when a new restaurant opens but Le Diplomate is off to a surprisingly
smooth start.

were serving the community, much
less appreciating the discrimination
in education and employment that
forces many transgender individuals
into the street-based sex work and
HIV risk behavior, he says. In 2010, I
drew up the blueprint for a transgender
employment program and found a
partner in Chicago House and Social
Service Agency. Together we built a
large coalition of government ofcials,
community leaders and transgender
individuals in order to make it a reality.
Then something interesting happened:
public and foundational support for the
program exploded, and the scale of
the project transformed in breathtaking
fashion. Its taken some time, but this
July the nal product, called the TransLife
Center, will be fully realized.
It will offer TransHousing, beginning
with more than 30 units of housing to
those who are trans and living on the
streets. It will also offer TransWorks, a full-
scale employment program, TransHealth
with medical connections to care services,
TransLegal services and TransSafe, a drop-
in center where transgender individuals
can get off the street to get a shower, a
meal and relax in an environment that is
free from discrimination.
I think that as LGBT organizations
continue to acknowledge the need to
more fully integrate the T into their
work that the TransLife Center is going
to offer incredibly important lessons
and be looked at as a trailblazing
program, he says. Over the long
term Im interested in authoring a book
on domestic policy. Id also like to join
a rock n roll band and run for public
ofcehoping that the two arent
mutually exclusive.
Another Point scholar is Monica Motley,
a dual degree student at Virginia Tech
seeking a doctorate degree in philosophy
in the Department of Biomedical and
Veterinary Sciences and a masters of
public health degree in the Department
of Population Health Sciences.
When I think about the Point
Foundation, its really meant to me guidance,
support and opportunity, she says. I can
be exactly who I am unapologetically, but
also at the same time, better ensuring that
I can achieve my potential for greatness to
change the world.
In 2007, Motley was elected the rst
African-American homecoming queen
in 35 years, as well as the rst openly
gay homecoming queen at Virginia
Commonwealth University.
A Danville, Va., native, Motley, who
came out at 16, plans to become
a social scientist and public health
practitioner seeking to better
understand how various socioeconomic
factors inuence health behaviors and
outcomes in high risk populations,
such as the LGBT community.
My research aims to identify and
better understand different social factors
physical environment, education,
income inuence our health
behaviors, especially physical activity
and nutrition, she says. I look at that
in high-risk communities, communities
of color, LGBTQ, individual of over 45,
low-income.
Not only does she work on the
research itself, but she tries to gure out
how to recruit more diverse individuals
into research so that it can better
prepare those as catalysts for change.
One of the most valuable things
I have taken away from Point is
mentorship from people who look like
me, she says. Not necessarily in the
literal sense, but being from a small
city, an African American, a woman and
an out lesbian, it was really important
that I was connected personally and
professionally that I was connected to
people who were also gay. It has helped
me become more condent.
Point Foundations academic/
program year begins in July with a
leadership conference, where past
and recently awarded scholars receive
intensive training in leadership
development, accountability, community
service guidance, and advocacy and
philanthropy to the LGBT community.
When I look at my fellow scholars,
these are brilliant individuals. Theres
someone who has discovered a planet.
Theres someone who has won an award
for documentaries. For someone to say
that they need me to succeed so we can
all continue this movement to achieve
equality, it moves me and gets me so
emotional, Motley says. Think of how
much further along we would be if we

Alexandria neighborhood a
great place for a fresh start
By SUE GOODHART
During the past 12 months, we have
witnessed a resurgence of the down-
sizing trend among both the baby
boomer generation and couples look-
ing for a simpler way of life. Many
friends and clients have come to us to
discuss trading their larger suburban
home for a smaller, more manageable
place to rest their heads.
We have found that those who do
not have children at home are truly
looking for a change of lifestyle, but
some arent ready to make the snow-
bird exodus to South Carolina or Flori-
da just yet. The great thing is that in the
Washington, D.C. area, there are many
great options to nd a new home and
reinvigorate your lifestyle.
Coupled with this trend is an increase
of baby boomers and couples moving
into Old Town Alexandria to take the
pied-a-terre idea to a more permanent
level. Old Town Alexandria is the quint-
essential spot to make a fresh start to a
new stage of life. The urban environment
provides convenience without all of the
congestion of a large city. With unique
shopping, dining and entertainment op-
tions you can choose to experience the
nightlife or stay cozy in your home while
overlooking the Potomac River, Alexan-
dria or a historic cobblestone street.
A new addition to the Old Town Alexan-
dria area is the construction of The Orono-
co, an unparalleled waterfront residence
providing spectacular views, luxurious
amenities and designer style throughout.
At The Oronoco you will nd one-
level living in two, three or four bed-
rooms, with options including a library
and family room.
The possibilities for creating your
home here are endless. The Oronoco
is a magnicent property that takes
your breath away. If you feel that this is
a lifestyle you want to consider, please
contact us at The Goodhart Group and
we would happy to show you what the
next chapter of your life could bring.
