Despite religious afliations,
7 schools earn high marks
for LGBT friendliness
By WILL OWEN
Religiously afliated universities
often are not associated with LGBT
friendliness or visibility. Recent studies
by Campus Pride reveal, however, that
more and more Catholic and Protestant
universities are actively seeking to
improve the campus climate for their
LGBT students.
Campus Pride, the nations leading
non-prot that advocates for LGBT
acceptance on college campuses,
compiles an extensive Campus
Climate Index that universities can
use free of charge to gauge their LGBT-
friendliness. LGBT campus housing and
LGBT retention rates are among the
many criteria schools are judged by.
Since the indexs creation in 2007, many
religious universities have looked to
Campus Pride for self-assessment.
We have encouraged religiously
afliated campuses to participate and
nd out what theyre doing well. You
see so much momentum around faith,
spirituality and being LGBT, and young
people have been leading the way
on college campuses, says Shane
Windmeyer, co-founder and executive
director of Campus Pride. Even
some of the staunchest conservative
campuses, like Notre Dame, nally have
some sort of LGBT recognition of their
groups. These seven campuses are
perfect examples of different religiously
afliated universities that are doing
really good work.
The following are Campus Prides
seven most LGBT-Friendly Religiously
Afliated Universities, which all scored
at least four out of ve stars on the
Campus Climate Index:
Agnes Scott College: 4.5 stars;
Presbyterian-afliated womens college
in Decatur, Ga.; 904 undergraduates;
has LGBTQIQ Safe Zone Committee
Baldwin-Wallace College: 4 stars;
Methodist-afliated private, liberal arts
college in Berea, Ohio; total enrollment
of 4,177; has Ofce of GLBT Services
and Allies student group
Elmhurst College: 4 stars; Afliated
with the United Church of Christ, located
in Elmhurst, Ill.; 3,052 undergraduates;
rst American college to add optional
LGBT identity question on applications
Georgetown University: 4 stars;
Catholic and Jesuit university in
Washington; 17,130 students total; has
LGBTQ resource center
Hamline University: 4.5 stars;
Methodist-afliated university in St.
Paul, Minn,; 1,866 undergraduate
enrollment; has faculty and student-run
Safe Zone Network
Macalester College: 5 stars;
Presbyterian afliation, located in St.
Paul, Minn.; 2,070 students; has all
gender bathrooms, Gender and
Sexuality Resource Center, Ofce of
Multicultural Life and an Allies Project
Training group
Muhlenberg College: 4.5 Stars;
Lutheran-afliated liberal arts college,
located in Allentown, Penn.: 2,225
undergraduates; has gay-straight
alliance, counseling services specically
for LGBT students
The seven colleges and universities
listed have different levels of adherence
to their religious afliations. Macalester
College, for example, now has a very
tenuous relationship with Presbyterianism.
Most students dont even realize
that we are Presbyterian in nature. Its
actually quite a secular place, so that
has probably made it easier (for LGBT
students), says Chris MacDonald-
Dennis, Macalester Colleges Dean of
Multicultural Life. We have always been
known as very, very gay friendly. A lot of
people dont realize that a lot of schools
are religiously afliated, especially
mainline Protestant ones. I would say
we probably are similar to a lot of other
religiously afliated schools.
Even if religiously afliated can
be a relative term, Campus Pride still
recognizes these seven schools as having
improved in their approaches to LGBT
student life over the past few years.
The seven we chose are the seven that
are highest rated among the religiously
afliated universities. They have participated
since 2007, and every year they come back
and improve something, Windmeyer says.
Now all seven have room for improvement,
but are true examples of campuses that
really have taken responsibility for their
LGBT students.

GSA camp helps prepare
student leaders for
advocacy work
By ANDREW BARNETT
Back-to-school time can be both an
exciting and a stressful time for many youth,
especially those who are lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, or questioning their
orientation or identity (LGBTQ). Besides
the return of homework and pop quizzes,
many LGBTQ youth also nd themselves in
new or familiar environments that may feel
unsafe or unwelcoming whether due to
bullying in the classroom, an unsupportive
administration, or a sense of loneliness or
isolation.
At SMYAL, were striving to change all
that. For years, weve been a place where
youth feel safe to be themselves, free
from hallway harassment and surrounded
by others like them. We also help local
youth to develop the condence and
leadership skills that they need to become
self-advocates.
This weekend, were going even further.
Starting today, we will host 28 local LGBTQ
youth at our rst annual GSA Activist Camp.
For three days, these young leaders will
engage in workshops many facilitated
by youth trainers to help them learn
how to build a successful Gay-Straight
Alliance (GSA) in their school. Theyll learn
what rights they have as students, how to
effectively organize their peers and how to
mobilize support for the issues that matter
most to them. This fall, they will be returning
to school with more than just backpacks
and pencils theyll have an entire new
set of skills that will allow them to create
real change and make their school a more
welcoming place for all students.
Theyll also have the support of the
DC Regional GSA Network, a system
managed by SMYAL to connect students
and advisers in schools across the District
and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs.
This weekends activist camp is the DC
Regional GSA Networks inaugural event,
with summits, conferences, support and
other activities planned throughout the
school year. While we could only bring 28
applicants with us to camp, the Network
itself is open to all of the communitys
student leaders.
LGBTQ youth are growing up in a much
different landscape today than in previous
generations. Todays youth are coming out
at a younger age, on average, than ever
before. Thanks to the Internet and social
media, they are more connected with each
other and have instant access to endless
information. Most of them have a strong
sense of how they dene and express their
identities and they are an active part of their
schools, neighborhoods and the larger
LGBT community.
In order to celebrate youth achievements,
encourage dialogue about youth issues and
share a glimpse into the lives of present-day
LGBTQ youth, I am excited to announce
our new partnership with the Washington
Blade to create a regular Youth Voices
column right here, which will feature a
new youth-written article each month from
September onward.
Thank you to the Blade for its partnership
and support on this project. I am thrilled to
give our communitys youth a new outlet to
explore the issues on their minds, including
bullying, coming out, relationships, family,
safety, GSA advocacy projects, reections
on LGBT news and events, and much more.
From here on out, you wont be hearing
from the executive director of SMYAL;
instead, it will be a youth-driven forum for
sharing, connecting and exploring.
Interested in making your voice heard?
Any and all local youth who would like to be
featured are invited to submit their ideas or
articles to youthvoices@smyal.org.
This fall, as our communitys youth
begin their studies once again, I look
forward to the opportunity for them to
teach us, as well.

Many students feel
helpless when they
see others harassed
(STATEPOINT) Think bullying is just
harmless teasing? An estimated 160,000
children miss school every day due to
fear of attack or intimidation by other
students, according to the National
Education Association. And Yale health
researchers have found a connection
between suicide the fourth leading
cause of death in children ages 10 to 14
and bullying and being bullied. LGBT
students are especially susceptible.
Experts say that kids themselves have
the power to put a stop to bullying.
Unfortunately, both victims and bystanders
dont always know the best way to handle
bullying situations as they occur.
Most kids feel terrible when they see
friends or classmates get bullied. They
want to help, but they dont what to
do, says Alice Cahn, Cartoon Network
Vice President of Social Responsibility.
Having strategies for these situations
can help prepare children to intervene
when the time comes.
With this in mind, Cartoon
Network launched the award-winning
Stop Bullying: Speak Up in 2010
campaign to educate kids on what
to do when they see friends getting
bullied. In partnership with ofcial
advisors, including staff from the U.S.
Departments of Education and Health
and Human Services; and partners
including CNN, The Anti-Defamation
League, the Pacer Foundation and
nationally recognized academic experts,
the bullying prevention campaign aims
to put a stop to this common and
serious problem.
The pro-social campaign is offering
these tips for parents and kids to help
stop bullying in their schools:
Tell an aculr: When someone ers
bullied, tell a parent, teacher or trusted
adult. Talking about it isnt tattling or
snitching. Its helping someone out.
Be lriencly: Bullyin can make a
victim feel alienated and lonely. Saying
a few kind words to the person who has
been bullied makes a huge difference.
volunreer: Your school's Lullyin
prevention program needs parents and
students to help encourage everyone to
speak up against bullying.
Say ir louc: Ask your school ro ly or
display the ofcial Stop Bullying: Speak
p la, which incicares rhar rhe school
is a place where bullying actions will not
be tolerated.
Learn more: Free online resources
can help you learn how to deal with
bullies. Visit StopBullyingSpeakUp.com
to access public service announcements,
two 30-minute documentaries and tips
sheets for parents and teachers that offer
a step-by-step guide for safe and effective
ways to be an active bullying bystander.
The site also provides links to the Anti-
Defamation League, Boys and Girls Club
of America and other partners providing
expert advice about bullying. All materials
are available in English and Spanish.
Dont stop there, says Cahn.
These resources are meant to spark a
conversation.
No child should feel like his or her
school is not a safe place to learn.
Parents, teachers and students can work
together to make a difference.

Updated standards and
technological advancements
mean big changes
(STATEPOINT) Across the country,
parents are beginning to notice that
todays classroom looks quite different
from what they experienced in their own
school days. From personalized learning
technologies to new educational
standards, teachers and administrators
are using a variety of tools to ensure
students are better prepared to succeed
than ever before.
In this era of innovation in education,
this school year will be particularly
exciting in part because states will be
piloting assessments aligned to the
Common Core State Standards, the
new set of K-12 educational standards
designed to improve students
readiness for college and future careers.
So just what do these changes mean
for your kids?
Shift to new standards
Schools nationwide are nding new
ways to provide individually tailored lesson
plans while addressing the Common Core
State Standards, often relying on a new
generation of educational technologies
that help students learn and succeed at
their own pace.
McGraw-Hill Educations Reading
Wonders is one such tool. Available
in both all-digital and print/digital
formats, it is the rst K-6 core reading
program designed specically for the
new standards.
Even before the advent of the
Common Core, we knew that preparing
students for the demands of college
and careers required setting a solid
foundation in skills such as reading
comprehension and writing, said
Christine Willig, senior vice president
of products at McGraw-Hill School
Education. When the new standards
reiterated the importance of these
skills, we saw an opportunity to build an
entirely new program that would address
the Common Core requirements, by
leveraging contemporary cognitive
science about how we learn, using
cutting-edge digital tools.
Personalized learning
Education research has shown that
instruction becomes more effective
when tailored to students unique
learning styles and needs. Personalized
learning tends to lead to deeper
learning, which will help students
meet many of the new Common Core
standards. As classrooms continue
getting bigger however, delivering that
sort of individual attention to students
becomes more difcult.
With this in mind, Reading Wonders
was built using entirely new educational
technology, offering interconnected
platforms personalized for students and
teachers and accessible across any device.
Other digital learning tools use
additional techniques to help students
succeed. McGraw-Hill Educations
LearnSmart and FLEX Literacy, for
example, each use adaptive technology
to continually assess students knowledge,
skill and condence levels and to create a
unique study path designed to help each
student in the topics and concepts they
need most a level of personalization
previously only available from a personal
tutor. LearnSmart delivers this adaptive
learning experience for a variety of high
school subject areas, while FLEX Literacy
incorporates it into a comprehensive,
Common Core-specic reading and
language arts intervention system for
students in grades 3-8.
More information about new digital
programs, including those designed
specically for the Common Core
State Standards, can be found at
mheducation.com.
In this ever-evolving educational
landscape, keeping up with the changes
can seem daunting, but it neednt be.
Parents can rest assured that teachers
are increasingly equipped with new
technologies that ensure their students
are getting the personalized attention
they need to improve their chances for
long-term success.

Gay destination spot rebounds
after Sandys devastation
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
FIRE ISLAND PINES, N.Y. Gay resort communities on New Yorks Fire Island
have largely recovered from Superstorm Sandy that devastated large swaths of
the Northeast coastline nearly a year ago.
The Pavilion, a nightclub that burned to the ground in a November 2011 re that
destroyed a quarter of Fire Island Pines commercial district, reopened in June.
Karen Boss, a year-round resident of Fire Island Pines, told the Washington Blade
earlier this month during an interview in her ofce that overlooks the hamlets harbor
that the Pavilions reopening has had a major psychological impact because it is

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
I came out at 18. The hardest person to
tell was my mother. I felt like I was breaking
her heart. She passed away three years
ago, and I am very happy she briey got
to know the man I would be spending the
rest of my life with.
Whos your LGBT hero?
I respect any youth who has the heart
and conviction to come out early.
Whats Washingtons
best nightspot, past or present?
It will always be Tracks for me. I grew up
in that place.
Describe your dream wedding.
Anywhere, as long as it is to Eric Brauer.
What non-LGBT issue
are you most passionate about?
I try to donate and help out with

and my partners mother battled cancer.
Fortunately my mother-in-law to be is

from our future nuptials.
What historical outcome
would you change?
The car crash of Princess Diana. I think
she was an amazing ambassador to
children all around the world.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Watching the two royal weddings in
England during my lifetime. I love all of the
royal traditions.
On what do you insist?
No clutter on the kitchen island. I hate
stuff lying around.
What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
I cant believe were going to see Ke$ha
tonight!
If your life were a book,
what would the title be?

Whats your advice for
LGBT movement leaders?
Be consistent!
What would you walk

What do you wish youd known at 18?
That I could have come out at 14.
Why Washington?
I love how eclectic it is. I also love the
architecture and monuments. Every time
Im in another city, I respect how beautiful
Washington is.

For Michael Hodges, Logan Circle is a great place to work but not
necessarily to live.
The entrepreneur opened Logan 14 Aveda Salon/Spa three years ago
(1314 14th St., N.W.) and says business is booming up 33 percent
already this year, a trend he hopes will continue as 14th Street explodes
(logan14salonspa.com).
I couldnt have picked a better site, the 43-year-old Hitchen, England,
native says of his business, a 6,000-square-foot salon with about 35
employees that offers hair, skin, massage, nails and more under one roof. I
knew 14th Street was gonna blow up, so we got in at a good time.
Hes pleasantly astounded at how gay his clientele is as well. He guesses
about half his clients are men and most of them are gay.
Its so different from doing hair in Bethesda, he says. There I might do
one mens haircut a day. Some days now I do 20 mens haircuts.
Hodges used to live in Logan but he and partner Eric Brauer moved to
the Brookland/Woodridge area where he says things are a little quieter.
Theyve been together ve years and are planning a big wedding for
October 2014.
In his free time, Hodges enjoys cooking and event planning. A self-
proclaimed bear, he organizes the DILF party (moving to the rst Saturday
of each month at Number 9) and has a new party in the works starting Oct.
12 at Cobalt. The working title is Furrball D.C.

Cilantro gives restaurateur
outlet for authentic
Mexican cuisine
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Opening a restaurant is tough
anywhere. But making a go of it in
Rehoboth Beach can be even harder.
The rents are sky high and you have to
make most of your money during the
summer season.
But despite the downsides, Gladys
Fernandez, owner and executive chef of
Cilantro Cocina De Mexico, was up for
the challenge. She was certain that the
Delaware summer town needed what
she had to offer. And now, after serving
a steady stream of satised customers
for just over two years, Fernandez is
doubly condent that she made the
right decision.
Id eaten everywhere in Rehoboth
and never encountered the kind of
rened, really fresh authentic Mexican
cuisine that is my passion, says
Fernandez, a former Arlington resident.
I just knew that if I could nd a good
spot with some street trafc, the people
would come.
And nd she did. Located in the
center of town on the south side of busy
main drag Rehoboth Avenue, Cilantro
(named for the lacey herb used in many
Mexican dishes) is housed in a homey
green storefront with inviting front and
back patios (the back patio with its fairy
lights, owering plants and candle light
sconces is especially charming). The
inside divided into dining room,
bar and lounge area is colorful and
tastefully decorated with Mexican
folkloric art.
It didnt always look like this, says
Fernandez, 49. When I signed the
lease, the interior was painted in dark,
murky tones and there was a huge mural
of a swamp on the wall. Not a happy
place, but weve changed all that.
Fernandez describes her cuisine as
strictly Mexican the real thing, not
commercial but homemade from the
cocina (kitchen). La comida preparada
en el momento, she says. Every
single dish is made one at a time. Not
easy when you have a party of 10, but it
makes all the difference.
Her specialties include Chiles
Reellenos Adelita (a fabulous stuffed
pepper), and the uffy overstuffed
Taquitos Dorados de la Merced. You
wont nd a crispy taco here. Currently,
shes expanding the moderately priced
menu to include more seafood offerings.
Born in Mexico City into a family
originally from Puebla (a southern
Mexican state known for its tasty
amalgam of pre-Hispanic and Spanish
foods), Fernandez learned to cook at
her grandmother Matildes side.
She was an amazing cook, she
says. She used only fresh ingredients
and consistently turned out delicious
food. Were a big family (Fernandez is
the oldest of eight children), so basically
my grandmother was cooking all day
and night. Now Im doing the same but
maybe a little more gourmet.
Shortly after arriving in D.C. in 1981,
Fernandez went to work at a busy
Mexican restaurant in Adams Morgan.
She remembers her rst night on the
job thinking, Well, if they believe this
is authentic Mexican food, theyre sadly
mistaken. I can do much better.
Over the years she worked mainly as a
server before opening her own Mexican
restaurant in Arlington and later a bar
in Adams Morgan where she learned
the demands of owning businesses.
She sold both ventures in 1997, but
always harbored ambitions of doing
the restaurant thing one more time, but
differently and better.
For Fernandez, Cilantro is the
opportunity to get it right.

Battle of the bulge
Gay author Mark Brennan Rosenberg will read from his new memoir Eating
My Feelings, on Wednesday night at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut
Ave., N.W.) at 7 p.m.
The memoir, published by Random House, humorously reects on
Rosenbergs own struggles with his weight and body image, with accounts
from his childhood in the 80s and his life as an out gay man in the 2000s.
Some of the childhood stories featured in Eating My Feelings include
anecdotes from fat camp and obliviously dressing up in blackface for
Halloween as Homey the Clown. His later stories as a gay man in New York
are especially scandalous, such as his attempt at blogger stardom with an
x-rated version of Julie and Julia.
For more information on the reading, visit politics-prose.com. To learn

Grant to play sold-out
Birchmere show
Singer Amy Grant, who rst made
a name for herself in contemporary
Christian music in the late 70s and
throughout the 80s then had a string of
mainstream pop hits in the 90s, plays
the Birchmere (3701 Mt. Vernon Ave.,
Alexandria, Va.) Thursday night. The
7:30 p.m. show has been sold out for
weeks (birchmere.com).
Grant gave her rst gay press interview
to PrideSource in April and expressed
compassion and unity for LGBT music
fans in measured, somewhat general
statements.
Shes been touring this spring and
summer in support of her latest album
How Mercy Looks From Here, which
dropped in May and has earned generally
favorable reviews. Her recent live shows
have found her darting generously
throughout her fairly vast discography.
Trademark hits like Baby Baby, El
Shaddai and Saved By Love are
staples of her set list but she often throws
in a few deep album cuts as well.
OLIVIA and her band open for Matthew Sweet next week at the Birchmere.

Personality differences
can be both vexing and
complementary in a relationship
DEAR MICHAEL,
My wife and I just got married two
years ago and now Im worried that
were going to get a divorce.
We ght a lot and always seem to
have the same ght: Somehow, we cant
agree on how we should be living our
lives. Sandy is always quick to point out
what she thinks Im doing wrong and
how she thinks I should handle things.
It can be as small as how I load the
dishwasher (I put the wrong things on
the bottom rack, evidently) or as big as
my buying a convertible with my own
money (she thinks theyre unsafe and
refuses to ride with me).
My complaints to her are mostly how
she wont stop telling me what to do. OK,
in fairness to her, I also sometimes am
critical of her choices, but thats because
she is always so serious and ultra-
practical (see car example, above). What
kind of way is that to live? Its fun to be
adventurous and a little wild sometimes!
The thing is, when we met, I liked that
she was so stable and I think she liked that I
pushed her to have fun. But now the things
we liked about each other are driving us
crazy. If we cant nd a way to be on the
same page, is our marriage doomed?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Im glad youve noticed that the
two of you keep having the same
ght. Now, all you have to do is stop
having it. Easier said than done, I know.
Nevertheless, thats the best route to a
happier marriage.
You and Sandy are essentially having
a ght about who is right. But there is no
correct answer to this question, so its an
unwinnable argument. Every individual
has preferences for how to live. Theres
no one right way and it is pointless to try
to prove that your way is best. As long as
each of you tries to convince your spouse
that you are right and she is wrong, youll
keep having a rancorous relationship.
Deciding to stop having this ght is the
rst step to a better marriage. But what if
your wife wants to keep arguing? Id advise
you to nd a way to back off, respectfully.
Putting her down even subtly for
wanting to continue the argument is just
going to perpetuate the Im-better-than-
you-are cycle that you both are in.
Ultimately, if you and Sandy are going
to have a happy marriage, the two of you
would do well to accept your differences.
Doing so would mean that you back off
from lecturing each other about what
you think is best. It would also lead to
your doing things separately sometimes,
when you each have your own strong
views of how to proceed and have good
reason not to yield . While its a clich that
lesbian couples fuse together, merging
their identities, it is true that women tend
to lean toward closeness. So you might
be uncomfortable with the notion of
more separateness. Nevertheless, less
fusion and more autonomy would be
helpful to reducing the tension between
you and would give you each some
breathing room.
By the way, its natural for us to be
attracted to difference at rst. One of the
fun things about relationships is that we
have someone who shakes up our world
and pushes our boundaries a little.
But over time, what was once novel can
become annoying. Because almost no one
likes to be told how to live, one important
component of a good relationship is to
honor each others differences and not try
to force your views on your partner. Know
that while you can absolutely advocate for
what you want, there is no guarantee that
you will get your way.
The bottom line: Respect your
partners choices, while recognizing that
neither of you must be bound by the
others preferences.

Stonewall Bocce League
gearing up for fall season
By KEVIN MAJOROS
You only have to look at some of the
names of their teams to know that the
members of Stonewall Bocce are having
a good time Love is a Bocceeld,
Joanie loves Bocce, Low Hanging
Bocces and the Andre Boccellis are just
a few teams on their roster.
The Stonewall Bocce League was
formed in 2011 by Melvin Thomas and
Lucy Cunningham. After playing in the
D.C. Bocce League, they decided to
form a league for the LGBT community
and its allies.
The group runs a spring league from
March to May and a fall league from
September to November. They play on
Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. in Logan Circle
and games usually last 30 to 45 minutes.
The rules of bocce ball are relatively
easy to learn. A small ball called the jack
is thrown onto the court and each team
has four larger balls, which are then
bowled onto the court in an attempt
to be closest to the jack. The team with
the closest ball is the only team that can
score points in any frame.
The sport of bocce ball in its present
form was developed in Italy, but
throwing balls toward a target is the
oldest game known to mankind. As
early as 5000 B.C., the Egyptians played
a form of bocce with polished rocks.
The Stonewall Bocce League has
become so popular that theres a cap of
200 players that make up the 20 teams in
the league. Registration for the league is
$40 to $45 and free agents are welcome
to register for placement on a team.
We operate under three principles
that guide all of our decisions, says
Co-Commissioner Brien Bell. Fun,
philanthropy and community.
At the beginning of each season, all
20 teams name a local charity of their
choice and then play to win money
that will be donated to the chosen
charity. At least 80 percent of the prots
raised during the season are given to
the named charities of the teams that
make it to the nal rounds of the league
championships.
Following league play on Thursday
nights, the players often head to
Nellies Sports Bar where they receive
special prices. Another social event for
the group is their mid-season karaoke
contest which is another opportunity for
fun and to raise additional money for
charitable giving.
I was looking at our group of players
during the last season, says Co-
Commissioner Thomas. We have an
incredibly diverse mix of race, sexual
orientation, gender and even players
with disabilities.
Thomas was recently honored with
the most valuable player award at the
2013 Team D.C. Champions Awards.
The Egyptians would be proud.
Registration is open for the fall season
from Monday through Wednesday
(Aug. 19-21) at stonewallsports.org.
