Subject/ Course/ Grade: English 12 Lesson Title: The Importance of Family and Vocabulary. Parents Can Be So Cruel. Rationale: This class will continue to introduce students to the play King Lear. By picking out vocabulary from the text we can together figure out the plot and expand students vocabulary. Focus on Act 1 Scene 2 Edgar, Edmund, and their father Gloucester. GCOs: 5- Interpret, select, and combine information using a variety of strategies, resources, and technologies. 6- Respond personally to a range of texts. SCOs: 5.1- Access, select, and research information to meet their individual learning needs. (look up vocabulary to better understand the play) 6.1- Respond to challenging texts and reflect on their responses. (Journal and Think Tac Toe) -Make connections between their own values, beliefs, and cultures and those reflected in texts *Analyze thematic connections and articulate an understanding of the universality of themes. -Explore diverse perspectives to develop or modify their points of view. Student Goals: Make a list of 5 unfamiliar words or phrases from King Lear and find their meaning. Discuss Act one. Answer these questions. (1)Have any characters have any tragic flaws or make tragic mistakes? (2)Have you felt any feelings so far? What is your opinion of the cast of characters? (3) If a tragedy has magnitude what has Shakespeare done to give this story dramatic magnitude so far? Instructional Strategies: Quiet reading, working independently to answer questions. Use dictionaries, internet, discussion to understand meaning of important words and phrases. Materials: King Lear text Internet, computer lab/ Dictionaries Lesson Introduction: 5-10 minutes Go over act 1 scene 1. Give instructions about picking out 5 unknown, confusing, or important words and phrases in 1.2. Lesson Body: 30 minutes Have class work on this activity. Lesson Closure: 20 minutes Discuss vocabulary and what important words stood out. Also spend time discussing what relationship exists between Gloucester and his two sons in 1.2. The Injustice and irrelevance of being labeled a bastard. (1)Have any characters have any tragic flaws or make tragic mistakes? (2)Have you felt any feelings so far? What is your opinion of the

cast of characters? (3) If a tragedy has magnitude what has Shakespeare done to give this story dramatic magnitude so far? Assessment: Formative, Anecdotal observation. Participation noted and recorded Adaptations/Extensions:

-Any student can read along to an audio version of the play by searching King Lear audiobook online on google. -Youtube King Lear to view performances of the play.
