Lecture 5
Project Planning Exercise

List 10 advantages (or Benefits) of Planning.

1. Gives you a time estimate and also allows you to track your progress against the plan.
2. Aids in identifying risks or hurdles that lay just over the horizon as well as outlines key milestones.
3. Allows for more accurate staffing estimates by providing a “bigger picture”.
4. Allows you to take a complex problem and break it down into smaller more manageable
objectives.
5. Planning, in many cases, defines a timeline and in doing so it allows for more accurate cost
estimates.
6. Provides team members with specific roles and responsibilities. This solidifies each member’s
objectives and prevents work overlaps.
7. A plan gives the customer some additional understanding towards the project process and prevents
confusion which limits comments such as ‘why has the work not started yet’.
8. Planning facilitates communication and also formalizes what methods of communication will be
utilized.
9. Facilitates procurement and allows for considerations to be given to material availability,
attainability, and deliverability.
10. Plans relay scope (as we see it) to client.
