Gay, bi men remain key to HIV epidemic

After three decades, many breakthroughs but infection rates on the rise
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
On June 5, 1985, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published an article in its authoritative journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report that experts now consider the rst signal that an unprecedented worldwide epidemic had begun. In the period of October 1980-May 1981, 5 young men, all active homosexuals, were treated for biopsyconrmed Pneumocystis carini pneumonia at 3 different hospitals in Los Angeles, California. Two of the patients died, the MMWR article stated. Pneumocystis pneumonia in the United States is almost exclusively limited to severely immunosuppressed patients, said the article. The occurrence of pneumocytosis in these 5 previously healthy individuals without a clinically apparent underlying immunodeciency is unusual. It would take another few years before scientists named the condition detected in the men discussed in that MMWR article as Acquired Immune Deciency Syndrome or AIDS. The name AIDS followed an earlier term used by some researchers and the media Gay Related Immune Disorder or GRID. In reecting on the tumultuous developments surrounding AIDS over the past 30 years, leaders of AIDS advocacy organizations and LGBT activists in the U.S. who lived through the early years of the epidemic say that, to some extent, the MMWR article of June 1981 still has considerable resonance for gay men.

Obama marks Pride

But no change in marriage views as city prepares to celebrate next week
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
President Obama commemorated June as Pride month on Tuesday by issuing a two-page presidential proclamation celebrating the event and recounting his accomplishments on behalf of the LGBT community. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, Obama wrote. Among the accomplishments that Obama cited is passage of legislation allowing for repeal of Dont TRANS DOCTOR TO SPEAK PAGE 8 CAPITAL PRIDE PREVIEW PAGE 30 BLACK PRIDE PHOTOS PAGE 52 Ask, Dont Tell, the signing of hate crimes legislation and steps taken to eliminate discrimination against LGBT people in federal housing programs. Last December, I was proud to sign the repeal of the discriminatory Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy, Obama wrote. With this repeal, gay and lesbian Americans will be able to serve openly in our armed forces for the rst time in our nations history. Our national security will be strengthened and the heroic contributions these Americans make to our military,

Equality Maryland board chair resigns

Departure comes one week after public spat with former director
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
The chair of the board of directors of Equality Maryland resigned on Tuesday and the nancially troubled LGBT group reduced the salary of its interim executive director and signicantly changed her duties, according to a statement released by the board. Attorney Charles Butler resigned both from his post as chair of Equality Marylands board and from the board itself, according to Patrick Wojahn, who chairs a separate board of the Equality Maryland Foundation. The statement released by the Equality Maryland board didnt give a reason for Butlers resignation. But his departure comes one week after he startled some of the groups supporters and members by publicly blaming the groups former executive director, Morgan Meneses-Sheets, for the organizations serious nancial woes. Meneses-Sheets, whom the board red in April, denounced Butlers claim that she entered into expensive contracts on behalf of Equality Maryland and hired staff without the boards approval or knowledge. In what observers called a messy public ght, Butler and Meneses-Sheets each told the Blade that the other shared the blame for a funding shortage that threatens to force the group to close its doors. As we announced last Tuesday, the nancial situation of Equality Maryland is very serious, Wojahn said in the statement released by the board on Tuesday. We are also hearing clearly through our Listening Tour that people in Maryland want to see signicant change in how we operate, he said. As custodians of the statewide communitys equality organization, we are committed to building an Equality Maryland that takes community input into consideration and that relies on a sustainable funding model. Wojahn was referring to a series of community meetings that Equality Maryland has held over the past two weeks throughout the state that the group has dubbed listening tour stops. The tour meeting was scheduled to take place June 9 in Silver Spring and another is scheduled for July 14 in Temple Hills. The statement says part of the immediate change the board has approved is a new contract for groups recently hired interim executive director, Lynne Bowman, former executive director of the statewide LGBT group Equality Ohio. Effective June 1, Bowmans focus will shift from external outreach and programmatic involvement to management of internal operations and an increased role directly supporting the boards efforts to revamp the organization, the statement says. As part of the new contract, Bowman will work at a reduced fee and spend half of the month in Baltimore and the other half working virtually from Ohio. She will be contracted on a month-to-month basis. Wojahn told the Blade the board will fulll, on a temporary basis, the duties that Bowman carried out as of this week in advocating for LGBT-related legislation before the Maryland Legislature along with other LGBT-related advocacy efforts. He said that unless new sources of funding emerge within the next few weeks, all but one of the groups staff members, the ofce manager, could be laid off by July 1. We offered the staff the opportunity to stay on for the next month, Wojahn said. We cant promise anyone anything beyond that. Sources familiar with LGBT politics in Maryland have said the Human Rights Campaign, which is based in Washington, D.C., was expected to lead a coalition of national and local groups in an effort next year to push for a same-sex marriage bill in the Maryland Legislature. Some of the states leading transgender rights advocates announced two weeks ago that they have formed a new statewide group called Gender Rights Maryland, which they said would lead lobbying efforts for a comprehensive gender identity non-discrimination bill.

Blade reporter attacked, robbed in Rehoboth

So far no evidence of anti-gay hate crime
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson suffered a broken nose in an attack by two or three unidentied assailants in Rehoboth Beach, Del., Sunday night while walking along a residential street near the house where he was staying for the Memorial Day weekend. Johnson said the attackers jumped him from behind as he walked along King Charles Street while he was headed toward the towns business section to meet friends at the Blue Moon gay bar and restaurant. He said one of the assailants, whom he described as young black males, grabbed his cell phone as they punched him in the head and body. He said they made no attempt to take his wallet and did not say anything as they attacked him. Johnson said a police ofcer and detective from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department interviewed him about the incident, saying the matter was under investigation. The incident took place on Johnsons birthday. Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said he would issue a statement seeking help from the public in the police investigation, with the hope that someone who may have witnessed the assault against Johnson or who might know the identities of the attackers would come forward. Banks said the attack against Johnson, which he lists as a robbery by force and violence, is the rst such incident to occur in the town so far this year. He said there were eight cases of robbery by force and violence in Rehoboth last year, and police made arrests in each of those cases. Some took place on the boardwalk. The fact that we made an arrest in every case last year shows how we take this very seriously, Banks said. Banks said that from Johnsons description of what happened, theres no evidence to indicate the attack and robbery was a hate crime. But he said police would pursue all possible leads and could change their classication of the crime if new information surfaces. Johnson said at least one of the attackers appeared to be in his late teens and early 20s, sported a shaved head, had a medium build, and was wearing a red sweatshirt with a hood. Johnson said the hood was not placed over the mans head at the time of the attack. Johnson was treated and released from Beebe Memorial Hospital in nearby Lewes, Del. Rehoboth Beach gay activist Peter Schott said violent assaults of this kind are an anomaly in the popular beach resort town, which has several gay bars and a large gay and lesbian presence.

The transgender surgeon as artist

Calif.-based doctor to appear at Saturdays Trans Pride event
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com
Dr. Marci Bowers is a rarity shes one of only two doctors who specializes in gender reassignment surgery whos also transgender herself. The other (Dr. Christine McGinn) is a protg of Bowers. Bowers, who transitioned in the mid1990s, is the only gynecologist who does gender reassignment surgery. Shell be at Trans Pride on Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Metropolitan Community Church of Washington) to give the keynote address and took nearly an hour on the phone last week from her practice in San Mateo, Calif., to talk about her life, her work, the practicalities of trans surgical procedures and where trans issues are going. Bowers comments have been edited for length and clarity. Washington Blade: How does a surgeon trained in one area move to another? What kind of training is involved? Dr. Marci Bowers: Well sometimes people think when youre a gynecologist all you do is look at female vulvas all day but its quite a surgical specialty. Theres extensive surgery experience required before learning the gender reassignment stuff. And after Id been doing surgery in practice for 13 years or so, once you have a basic framework about handling tissue and bleeding, learning a new skill isnt as hard as it might seem. Blade: So if someone does, say, gall bladder surgeries and wants to start doing heart transplants, whats the process like to move to a whole other part of the body? Bowers: Traditionally you have to do a fellowship of some kind to do that. You have to go back, reapply as if youre just out of medical school, do a residency all over again in the new eld and go from there. They might give you a little credit on a few things, but you pretty much have to start back at the beginning. It was different for me because theres no residency or fellowship for doing gender reassignment surgeries and I had a lot of experience surgically so doing an entire residency for me would have been ridiculous and superuous. Its really a mentoring process and I learned from Dr. (Stanley) Biber. Blade: Does it give you added credibility to be doing these surgeries but also be transgender yourself? Bowers: Well, I think thats really for the consumer to decide that, but I think so. Its sort of like the hair club for men. Not only am I president, Im also a customer. Someone who understands

Dr. MARCI BOWERS says gender reassignment surgery isnt as traumatic as many fear. Complications, she says, are extremely rare, patients are in the hospital an average of only three nights and most are off pain medication within 48 hours.

what its like to be bald. Or like if youre selling sports cars but you drive a minivan. I know what the consumer is looking for but I think being a gynecologist is the most important. Because its a very visual surgery and very artistically based. If someone has a gall bladder out and there are no complications, nobody cares what it looked like but this surgery has such an artistic component, the surgeons interpretation is so critical. Blade: Many trans people say the world is too obsessed with whos had what done surgically. Do you agree? Bowers: Thats a crucial point and one that I keep bringing up proactively because obviously people still dont understand the difference between gender and genitalia. Gender, we know, gets established at a very early age, like by age 4, 5 or 6 and it doesnt really change very much. This is what transgender people have been saying for years, This is how I felt since I was 5 years old. So the question about surgery is really the dumbest question. I was a woman since I transitioned. Nobody tells you whether youre male or female. And it isnt about the surgery, its what society says when they meet you at the grocery store or the food counter. Blade: Trans acceptance seems to be making progress but still seems signicantly behind gay and lesbian acceptance. Do you agree with that? Do you think it will continue to improve? Bowers: Well, yes, I do think we are behind where the lesbian and gay community is in terms of acceptance. Some of that is just the sheer numbers, some of it is its still a little bit of a minority sort of thing and somehow it does sort of push peoples buttons in a different way. Thats too bad because if the gay and lesbian community saw the trans

community as more supportive, we could make much more progress but sometimes the discrimination we get within the gay and lesbian community is worse than it is with the straight community. Its like they just dont get it and its very hurtful. There are common threads that run through all kinds of discrimination. Were ghting the same forces that want to simplify the world and turn back the clock so everything is black and white and keep dragging at the heels of progress. Blade: What kinds of procedures do you do? All bottom stuff or more? Bowers: Kind of bottom plus. I do a procedure on the females, Chondrolaryngoplasty, which is a shaving of the thyroid cartilage. For some women, its a telltale sign in the throat and it was rst done by Dr. Biber in the 1970s. Its also a very delicate procedure thats not taught anywhere, no ear, nose or throat doctors do it. Its a very specialized thing. Blade: And you do both male-to-female and female-to-male gender reassignment procedures? Bowers: Yes. Blade: Which are more common? How many do you average in a year? Bowers: I do about 120 male-to-female surgeries a year. Its about four-to-one female to male versus male to female. Blade: Are most people able to orgasm after surgery? Bowers: Its different. For female to male, theres really no impact. With a Metoidioplasty, guys can use it for penetration so thats the good part there. If anything, its enhanced. Plus the fact that theyre testosterone-driven men, the libido tends to accelerate with transition. With male to female, its very complicated

and about 30 percent of biologically born women arent able to orgasm at all anyway. Our patients for the most part are able to. Its a very high percentile. About 90 percent but the thing you have to realize is that going from male to female for one thing, just hormonally, you tend to go to a lower level of interest just based on reduced testosterone levels. When youre a woman, you wonder why we leave men in charge of so much. Its so dominated by sexual thoughts. Sometimes I think, Wow, what was I thinking about all those years? Theres so much more to do. I say that sort of tongue in check. And the feelings are a big different. Maybe like going from the oboe to the banjo.

Trans Pride to feature health focus

Trans Pride, now in its fth year, will be held Saturday at Metropolitan Community Church of Washington (474 Ridge Street, N.W.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is designed to be an event where attendees stay for all or most of the day. Very early on, the community voted for it to be a health-based focus, says Danielle King, whos co-chairing this years event with Holly Goldmann. Thats why Dr. Bowers was invited. We felt like she could offer some insight that would be really attractive to our audience. A $10 donation is suggested but not required. King hopes attendees will plan to spend their day at the church. We want them to come and enjoy the whole day, she says. Therell be workshops and panel discussions on trans health throughout the day. She expects about 200 people, more than in past years when the event has been held at the Capital Pride host hotel. Trans Pride is under the Capital Pride events umbrella.

Ga. state lawmaker comes out as gay

Rep. Rashad Taylor outed by partners ex-boyfriend
By DYANA BAGBY Georgia Voice
Georgia State Rep. Rashad Taylor (D-Atlanta) came out last week as a gay man at a press conference after the exboyfriend of his current partner sent out e-mails to legislators alleging he is gay and also accusing him of misusing his ofce. I am a gay man, Taylor said at the press conference held at Georgia Equalitys ofces. Taylor becomes the rst openly gay male serving in the Georgia Legislature and the third openly gay state lawmaker. State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) and State Rep. Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) are also openly gay and ran as openly gay when seeking ofce. According to the Victory Fund, which works to elect openly gay ofcials, Taylor is only the sixth black openly LGBT person to serve in a state legislature. State Rep. Bell was the rst black lesbian elected to a state legislature in 2009. Prior to the announcement, a man who is the ex-boyfriend of Taylors partner sent an e-mail to state legislators outing him and alleging Taylor misused his ofce by promising men jobs in exchange for sex. Taylor denied those allegations, but did say the truth is he is gay. For some it may take two days, for some it take two years or 20 years [to come out], he said. I serve in public ofce and try to retain some semblance of a private life. This is a journey Ive been on, he said. I wouldnt want to expedite anyone elses journey. It ought to be a personal decision.

Taylor admitted that if the allegations against him had not been made he would not have come out. I would not be standing here today, he said, adding he considered ignoring the allegations. But now was the time to tell the truth, Taylor added. I felt like honestly this was it unless I spoke the truth, Taylor said, saying he didnt want someone to feel like they had something over his head. He said before today, he could count on one hand the people who knew he was gay. Taylor also said that he came out to his mother and family in the past 24 hours. He thanked his mother for her support and she hugged him warmly after he spoke to the media. I feel really good. My heart is as ease, he said about coming out publicly. Tonights sleep will probably be the best sleep Ive had in 12 or 13 years.

Taylor acknowledged that in the AfricanAmerican culture, being gay is a tough subject to discuss, which played a role in his not coming out publicly before. When asked about his political future, Taylor said, I am the same Rashad Taylor that was on the ballot in 2008 and 2010. My positions wont change. Taylor was anked by his mother and other family members as well as State Rep. Alisha Morgan; State Sen. Vincent Fort; Reese McCranie, the openly gay spokesperson for Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed; Larry Pellegrini, the openly gay executive director of the Georgia Rural Urban Summit; and Georgia Equality Executive Director Jeff Graham. Taylor was greeted with applause when he walked to the podium. Taylor, who just turned 30 two months ago, is the youngest member of the Georgia General Assembly. He was rst elected in 2008 and then re-elected in

2010 to serve House District 55. Graham said he was pleased with Taylors announcement despite the circumstances. Im certainly very pleased for the community, and for Rashad. I think the circumstances are, of course, very difcult as he said, Graham said. I think anyone who identies as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender understands ... the one thing that ties us all together is coming out. First we have to come out to ourselves, then to family and friends and then eventually the public. That can be the most difcult process, coming out publicly, to strangers. He is embracing who he is. We have a community of hundreds of thousands of Georgians who will support him, Graham added. He has been a strong ally in the community. Im very proud we supported him in 2008 and 2010 and we gladly support him in 2012 as an openly gay man, Graham said.

Experts condent Prop 8 ruling will stand

While proponents of a constitutional amendment banning recognition of same-sex marriage in California believe that Judge Vaughn Walker was biased in striking down Californias Proposition 8 because he did not disclose publicly that he is in a same-sex relationship, most legal experts believe a district judge hearing arguments in favor of overturning the decision is unlikely to do so. Just as every single one of the attempts to disqualify judges on the basis of their race, gender, or religious afliation has been rejected by other courts, wrote California Attorney General Kamala Harris in a brief led in opposition to overturning the ruling, this Court should similarly reject Defendant-Intervenors effort to disqualify Judge Walker based on his sexual orientation. Harris concluded, the fact that Judge Walker is, like many individuals, in a longterm relationship that might or might not result in marriage is insufcient to show either that he has a disqualifying interest in the outcome of this litigation or that his impartiality may be questioned. According to the L.A. Times, legal experts from around the country are nearly unied in the belief that the ruling will not be overturned, while still disagreeing over whether or not the judge had an obligation to disclose his relationship status before the trial. A judge should always disclose facts that are not publicly available, as in public nancial disclosure lings, New York University Law School Professor Stephen Gillers told the newspaper, to give the parties a chance to seek recusal.

Judge VAUGHN WALKER, who is gay, struck down Californias Proposition 8, but was criticized by conservatives for not disclosing his sexual orientation.

Adm. Mullen, leader in Dont Ask repeal, retires

WASHINGTON With the presidents selection of Army service chief General Martin Dempsey to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, one of the most prominent gures in the effort to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell, Admiral Mike Mullen, will retire as the head of the body of senior uniformed leaders in the Defense Department. Mullen will join outgoing Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in bidding farewell to the department. During his tenure, Mullen led the White House effort to repeal the 17-year-old ban on open service by gays and lesbians in the military. Mullen testied on multiple occasions in Congress on the need to end the ban on open service in order to preserve military readiness. Gen. Dempsey will assume his new role alongside Gates successor, current director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon Panetta. Meanwhile, a major opponent of repeal indicated he will no longer push to continue barring open service. According to ThinkProgress, a Washington-based progressive think tank, when asked if he would support reinstating the law at a town hall event in Pompano Beach, Fla., Republican Rep. Allen West said, Im not doing anything to prevent Dont Ask, Dont Tell. The thing that Im doing is Look, a decision has been made. Later he said about reinstating the law, Now it has been done. I will sit back to see what happens.

HRC endorses Obama for reelection in 2012

Early move draws criticism from gays on left and right
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
because the ght for equality affects us all he will not support it. HRCs endorsement for Obama shouldnt come as a surprise because the organization has been working closely with the White House in the implementation of pro-LGBT initiatives since the start of the administration. HRC endorsed Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign and has endorsed only Democratic presidential candidates in previous elections. But the extent to which HRC will back Obama in the 2012 election with nancial support remains uncertain. Fred Sainz, HRCs vice president of communications, said decisions on nancial contributions or other support that his organization will make to Obama havent yet been made. Today is about the endorsement, Sainz said. If and when there are other reections of our support those are determinations that will be made later. Criticism of the timing of HRCs endorsement quickly emerged among LGBT activists on the left and right. John Aravosis, the gay editor of AMERICAblog, said HRC should have waited until Obama took more action on behalf of the LGBT community such as announcing support for marriage rights for gay couples before endorsing the president. Why not hold out for him to endorse marriage equality? Aravosis said. Or ask him to sign an executive order on [the Employment Non-Discrimination Act] for federal contractors? The man hasnt even nished repealing [Dont Ask, Dont Tell], and forget about ENDA and DOMA, and HRC is already saying Mission Accomplished? You dont just give the president something for nothing. You negotiate these kind [of] endorsements. Sainz said HRC would continue to press for more pro-LGBT actions from Obama. We continue to work toward all of those very important priorities, Sainz said. The alternative to not having President Obama in the White House is just not an acceptable option. Aravosis said he thinks HRC will purport to have received promises from the Obama administration in exchange for offering support, but should be

Illinois civil unions become law

CHICAGO Wednesday marked the rst day that Illinois same-sex couples can apply for civil union licenses from the state. Lead lobbyist in the push to pass the bill in 2010, Rick Garcia told the Blade that lines stretched out to the street, at the Cook County Clerks ofce Wednesday morning. According to Garcia, the law survived six separate attempts by conservative lawmakers to derail the onset of the law after passage, and now provides 648 new rights to same-sex couples, including emergency medical decision making powers and the ability to put both spouses names on the birth certicate to babies born to same-sex spouses. The new law, however, has emboldened conservatives to push for a voter referendum amending the Illinois Constitution to bar recognition of same-sex relationships.

Widow denied death benets after husband dies

WHARTON, Texas A judge has invalidated the marriage of Nikki Araguz and her deceased reghter husband, killed in a re in 2010, because Araguz is transsexual. Though born intersex, Araguz was declared male at birth and was not able to present as her actual gender identity until years later. A couple is ineligible for marriage in the state of Texas if gender markers on both birth certicates match, rather than gender at the time that the nuptials occur. After her husband Thomas death, Araguzs in-laws sought to use the courts to invalidate the marriage and deny her spousal benets upon claims that Thomas was unaware of Araguzs former gender at the time they were married. The Wharton County, Texas court sided with the family.

Fla. high school selects trans prom queen, gay king

DAVIE, Fla. Running against 14 other women at her school, McFatter Technical High School senior Andii Viveros, 17, surprised a Florida town by earning her classmates selection as prom queen. Born Andrew Viveros, Andii began publicly presenting herself as female two years ago, despite being bullied and harassed, according to Steve Rothaus of the Miami Herald. They called my name and I was in total shock, the newly crowned prom queen told the Herald. Many students have started a petition to have me removed from the ballot. They also are outraged and say I am making a mockery of prom, because I am going in an evening gown. Despite the pressure, Andii stayed in the running for the prominent role and took the top prize. McFatter students did not stop with that surprise, however. Prom-goers also selected openly gay Juan Macias as prom king.

The Human Rights Campaign announced last week that it has ofcially thrown its support behind President Obama in his bid for a second term in the White House. In a statement, HRC President Joe Solmonese said his organization endorsed Obama because of what the president accomplished for the LGBT community during his nearly two-anda-half years in ofce. President Obama has improved the lives of LGBT Americans more than any president in history, said Solmonese. In 2008 we were promised change and profound change is what we got. More remains to be done and ensuring that President Obama is able to continue the forward momentum toward equality for another term is an absolute priority of the Human Rights Campaign. The achievements for the LGBT community that HRC highlighted in its endorsement statement include pressing for passage and signing legislation to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell; pressing for passage and signing a hate crimes law; determining that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and refusing to defend the anti-gay law in court; and requiring hospitals across the country to grant visitation rights for same-sex couples. Alec Gerlach, spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, said the HRC endorsement demonstrates the support that Obama has offered the LGBT community. That the Human Rights Campaign offered such an early endorsement is a clear sign that the president has fought for LGBT rights across the country and in our nations military, Gerlach said. We will work closely within the LGBT community in the months to come to ensure that we are united in the cause to re-elect the president and to ensure equality for gay and transgendered Americans. The president believes that DOMA is discriminatory and unfair, and

Carney: No change in Obamas marriage stance

and have made throughout our history, will be fully recognized. Obama also noted that June marks the 30th anniversary of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The president recalled that last year he announced the rst comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States, which focuses on using evidencebased approaches to decrease new HIV infections and to improve care for people living with the disease. This landmark anniversary is an opportunity for the LGBT community and allies to recommit to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and continuing the ght against this deadly pandemic, Obama said. Obama has issued Pride proclamations for each of the three years in which hes served in the White House. Former President George W. Bush issued no such proclamation. But the proclamation fell short of announcing support for marriage equality. In a related development, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was tightlipped on Tuesday when reporters pressed him for updates on President Obamas views on an executive order barring LGBT job bias and same-sex marriage. During a news conference, Carney said under questioning from the Washington Blade that he was unaware of any talks when asked if any internal discussion followed Sen. Tom Harkins (D-Iowa) recent endorsement of an executive order barring workplace discrimination against LGBT people. Not that Im aware of, Carney said. I dont have anything new for you on that. Earlier this month, Harkin came out in favor of an executive order that would mandate that the federal government only contract with companies that have policies protecting their LGBT employees from workplace discrimination. As chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee, Harkin is the leading Senate Democrat on labor issues. Harkin joined Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), a gay lawmaker and member of the House Committee on Education & the Workforce, and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the Senate, who have also expressed support for the measure. Carney said Obama welcomes Harkins input but has no information on the potential executive order. The Iowa senator helped build momentum for Obamas presidential bid in 2007 by inviting him to the 30th Annual Steak Fry, a major event for potential presidential candidates in the Iowa caucus process. Im sure that the president always wants to hear what Senator Harkin has to

say on a variety of issues, but I dont have anything for you on that particular one, Carney said. An executive order barring government contractors from discriminating against LGBT people is viewed as an interim alternative to ENDA passage while Republicans are in control of the House and progress on the measure in the lower chamber of Congress is unlikely. The White House hasnt said one way or the other whether Obama would be open to issuing such a directive.

Similarly, Carney said he had nothing to offer when another reporter asked why Obama has yet to come out in support of same-sex marriage. Mediaites Tommy Christopher said that a reasonable person would conclude, given the presidents recent statements and actions, that Obama in fact favors marriage equality although he has yet to articulate this belief. The president has said in the past what his position is, Carney replied. It hasnt changed. If it changes Im sure hell let you all know.

HRC endorsement of Obama draws criticism

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10

challenging the president rather than standing behind him. While Im sure HRC will claim they got lots of juicy promises in exchange for the endorsement, everyone else learned a long time ago that the president is unlikely to keep his promises unless you get in his face, and HRC will never get in his face, Aravosis said. So the promises are meaningless, and thus the president got HRCs endorsement for nothing, and now wont have to do anything for the next two years to truly earn that endorsement. Im sure it nails down the president for the next HRC dinner, but that really shouldnt be the goal here. HRC didnt immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the organization secured any additional promises from Obama in exchange for the endorsement. LGBT conservative groups also criticized HRC for making an endorsement before a Republican presidential nominee has been chosen or even before all the likely candidates on the Republican side have announced their intent to run for the White House. Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of GOProud, said HRC is ending what he called its charade of bi-partisanship by endorsing Obama at this point in the election cycle. LGBT people who are interested in putting policy before partisanship now know that HRC is little more than a puppet of the Democratic National Committee and an organization that has one goal to elect more Democrats, LaSalvia said. R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, also said HRC is offering its support too early by endorsing Obama with the 2012 election more than a year away. By prostrating themselves before Barack Obama eighteen months before the 2012 election, the Human Rights Campaign has effectively told the president that he doesnt have to do anything more to earn gay and lesbian votes, Cooper said. Given his lackluster record in the fight for Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal, LGBT Americans were counting on HRC to hold the presidents feet to the fire on his other campaign promises, not to become a branch of his re-election campaign. Cooper further criticized HRC by saying the endorsement sends the wrong message to potential Republican presidential nominees who may want to reach out to the LGBT community. There are several possible candidates who deserve to be fairly

judged on their own merits, and the dialogue on equality issues for the 2012 campaign has barely begun, Cooper said. This decision makes it clear that Joe Solmoneses greatest priority is an invitation to drinks at a Democratic White House, not securing votes for ENDA, DOMA repeal or tax equity.

Such a pre-emptive endorsement is a mistake and will undermine equality efforts. In response to criticism from LGBT conservative groups, Sainz said HRC made the endorsement because Obama is far superior to any potential candidate the Republican Party may

choose in 2012. The records of other candidates seeking the presidency should be a wake-up call to all fair-minded Americans, Sainz said. As the ght for equality moves forward, President Obama is marching with us while the alternative would stop us in our tracks.

Dan Choi arrested, attacked at Moscow Pride

Despite incident, activist says attitudes slowly changing in Russia
By PHIL REESE preese@washblade.com
Former Army Lt. Dan Choi brought back some battle scars as souvenirs from his weekend trip to Russia. Despite being a little bruised, battered and jet lagged, Dan is glad that he made the trip to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community of Russia in the sixth attempt to stage a Pride march in Moscow. We were all hopeful that this year was going to be the rst Pride parade, Dan said of Saturdays events. After the European Court of Human Rights ned the Russian government 40,000 for being in violation of the Russian Constitutions guarantee of freedom of assembly, and released statements that barring peaceable protest violates the United Nations declaration of Human Rights, Russian activists believed this would be the year. For the sixth year in a row, GayRussia went about ling the government forms required for an event of this nature. However, despite new leadership in the city government, and all of the attention being paid, the organizers were still denied their permits because, according to Choi, police stated they would not be able to provide security. They claimed they could not provide security but I saw security out there. And there was an anti-gay march a week ago that was sanctioned by the government, [and that group lled out] the same forms as the gays. Ours was denied but the anti-gay one was allowed. That didnt make any sense to us. Choi took the trip to Moscow with Chicago activist and Gay Liberation Network founder Andy Thayer, well-known British activist Peter Tatchell and the French founder of the International Day Against Homophobia, Louis Georges-Tin. The four well-known gay rights leaders came to Moscow to stand in solidarity with the organizers of the march, famous Russian activist, Nikolai Alekseev and Nikolai Baev. Despite not having government approval, the activists decided to go ahead with the event, hoping the police would step in to protect the demonstrators from the crowd of Neo-Nazis that Choi says had started to assemble. Andy [Thayer] had a sign that said gays deserve equal rights everywhere, in both English and Cyrillic. Immediately the authorities tried to tear it down and others tried to tear it down and they immediately started pounding me on the back of the head and tugging me in different directions. And police were essentially trying to trick me when I was moving in any direction. When I got to 100 yards from the police trucks, there was more and more shouting it got really loud and then I tripped either they tripped me, or maybe there was a step, and thats when I felt them from behind pushing me to the ground, and my right ear was dug into the dirt, pushing me into the ground and forward, scraping my ear. Then someone kicked me in my leg, and punched me in my chest, then I was yelling glasnost, which means openness and integrity. Thats when Choi was shoved into a large police van with eight LGBT activists and six of the counter-protesters. By that point I still had my phone, unlike in America they dont handcuff you, they dont take off your belt, they let you keep everything, and the same went with the Russians. Dan says that is how he was able to Tweet as well as take video and pictures. We were held in the paddy-wagon the longest. I think its because theres a regulation youre only supposed to be held three hours before getting formal charges. The mood was slightly hostile inside the van. In there, there were a few Neo-Nazis six of them and eight of us and there was immense racism against Louis Georges-Tin the French activist and founder of International Day Against Homophobia, and of course myself for being racial minorities, more pronounced against Louis Georges who is black. In the holding cell, Dan began to get to know better all of the men and women he had been arrested with. These guys were dressed like they were going to a festival and guys on our side were dressed conservatively, and less like they were going to a festival. Initially I thought maybe theyre not Neo-Nazis; not the opponents. One of the guys said I love gay people I just dont think they should be loud about it. Some anti-gay groups in America use that same messaging, I think. He wasnt even [at the Pride march] to do anything against gay people. His tune changed dramatically from the time we were in the paddy-wagon to when we were in the holding cell. Once we started talking, he asked, When did you guys nd out you were gay? and Louis asked when did you nd out you were straight? Dan says he suddenly saw a teachable moment. He asked if I was American and I said I was in the Army in America and born there, and he asked if there were gay people in America in the Army, and I said there were many, and his head was about to explode. He said I love New York and I wish to go there.

DAN CHOI was arrested at Moscow Pride last weekend with several other prominent gay rights leaders from the U.S., U.K. and France.

I asked what exactly are the charges [the counter-protesters were expected to be] getting. I was very interested to know what the charges would be. Nikolai [Alekseev] said it would be failure to obey, like what we get at the White House when we protest. Choi took this opportunity to get the counter-protester to think about the similarities between the two situations of being discriminated against merely for self-expression, which the former opponent began to seriously ponder. The processing took a while. There was a higher-ranking guy who came in and they seemed to be having a jurisdiction dispute and at one point there were more police in the room than any arrestees. And after a little more than an hour they took our passport numbers and released us without charges. The Russians were released later. Normally, as I understand it, with foreigners they get rid of you quick to avoid an international incident, but they hold Russians overnight and they get harangued and yelled at and abused. Instead they got a warning and were released. They knew exactly what this was about, they knew it was already getting attention in the news, and they wanted us to get out of there. The protest was at 12:30 p.m., we were released at 5 or 6 p.m. Everyone was

back by 9 p.m. Choi believes that the increased visibility being afforded the event each year signals a coming change in tides for the Moscow LGBT community. Six years theyve been doing Moscow Pride, the media environment has changed. People have been able to get things up on the Internet through Facebook, Twitter and things like that uncensored and as they happened. And, as you see in the pictures, there were more media people out there than protesters than both sides combined. Also this was happening at a time when [Russian President] Medvedev was giving a speech in front of the G8, and Tweeting himself that he wants more openness in the Internet and reporting, in speech, but at the same time, the country is banning freedom of expression for our community. In Russia even though its not illegal to be gay, they have a long way to go in terms of gay rights. They face the same issues as we do in our movement, but there are a huge number of people from all over Russia in Moscow who pack the clubs and a signicant part of that population remains closeted and even though in the city youll see that theres quite an acceptance of gays you wont see them holding hands and you wont see them protesting or agitating.

30 years later, HIV infections on rise

C O NTINUED FROM PAG E 01

They acknowledge that so much has changed for the better over the past 30 years, including breakthroughs in biomedical research resulting in highly effective drugs that transformed AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable, chronic illness like diabetes. But AIDS activists also point out that HIV and AIDS continue to disproportionately impact gay men or men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States and other countries. And although the perception of AIDS as a gay disease has largely receded from the minds of most Americans, AIDS activists say they nd themselves in the ironic position of having to remind Congress and state and local governments that more resources and funding are needed for HIV prevention programs targeting gay and bisexual men. MSM is the only group for whom, according to the CDC, new infections are still increasing, said Ronald Johnson, vice president for policy and advocacy for AIDS United, a national group formerly known as AIDS Action. So there continues to be a concern that there is not enough targeted prevention resources to MSM, particularly MSM of color and young MSM of all races and ethnicities, Johnson said. According to the CDC, while MSM account for about 2 percent of the U.S. population, more than half of all new HIV infections in the U.S. each year (53 percent) occur among MSM. CDC data also show that MSM make up nearly half of all people living with HIV in the U.S. 48 percent. CDC gures show that white MSM account for the largest number of annual new HIV infections of any group in the U.S., followed closely by black MSM, according to a CDC fact sheet released last month. There are more new HIV infections among young black MSM (aged 13-29) than among any other age and racial group of MSM, the fact sheet says. The Obama administration, with input from AIDS advocacy organizations, released a National HIV/AIDS Strategy document in July 2010 that, among other things, calls for an aggressive effort to develop better HIV prevention programs targeting MSM. Johnson and Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of the AIDS Institute, a national advocacy group, praised the administration for developing the strategy document, which they say covers most of the bases needed for addressing HIV prevention programs for MSM. But the two said the proposals in the strategy document have yet to be fully implemented. They note that delays in its implementation are due, in part, to the U.S. economic situation that has prevented needed increases in federal AIDS funds and severe cutbacks in state and local funding for AIDS-related programs.

Despite medical breakthroughs over the past 30 years, HIV infection rates remain stubbornly high among gay and bi men.
WASHINGTON BLADE ARCHIVE PHOTO BY DOUG HINCKLE

Phill Wilson, president and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute, said in a commentary last week in the Washington Informer, a black community newspaper, that he fears the horrors of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, when friends and family members watched loved ones die due to a lack of effective medical treatment, could return to some degree in the next few years. According to Wilson, if the federal government fails to boost funding for the federal-state AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), low income people who rely on the program to provide them the medications they need keep the AIDS virus in check could become casualties just as their predecessors became casualties years earlier. But this time, he said, an inability to gain access to medicine due to funding shortfalls would be responsible for their fate at a time when effective medicine is readily available. He called such an outcome immoral. The ADAP program was created under the Ryan White AIDS Care Act to provide life-sustaining drugs for low-income people with HIV and AIDS who are under insured or dont have any health insurance to help pay for the drugs. ADAP funding cuts by states and a large increase in the number of people applying for ADAP assistance has resulted in nearly 8,000 people being placed on state waiting lists for the AIDS drugs they need to remain healthy. The health insurance reform law that President Obama proposed and Congress passed two years ago was expected to relieve the ADAP funding pressure on states when it takes effect in 2014. However, some states that oppose the law have led lawsuits seeking to prevent its provision requiring all citizens to buy some form of health insurance from going into effect, making its outcome uncertain. Nearly all AIDS advocacy groups support the law, saying it would strengthen medical care for large numbers of people with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious

Diseases, an arm of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, has been the leading federal government ofcial monitoring the AIDS epidemic and directing AIDSrelated research since the disease burst on the scene in 1981. In a speech commemorating the 30th anniversary of AIDS at NIH headquarters in Rockville, Md., on Tuesday, Fauci said hes optimistic that an AIDS vaccine can be developed in the near future. We have scientic evidence that a safe and effective HIV vaccine is possible, he said in a statement released on May 18. In 2009, a clinical trial in Thailand involving 16,000 people demonstrated for the rst time that a vaccine could safely prevent HIV infection in a modest proportion of study participants, he said. Many of the best minds in HIV vaccine science are examining blood samples and data from the Thai trial to learn how the vaccine candidate prevented HIV infections and to consider how it could be modied to be more effective. Fauci said NIAID is also optimistic about development within the next few years of effective vaginal and rectal microbicides that can be used to prevent the transmission of HIV during sexual contact. Fauci and other researchers have also pointed to studies showing the effectiveness to a certain degree of prescribing HIV drugs for use by non-infected people believed to be at high risk for HIV infection, such as men who have sex with men. Known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, the use of this prevention measure is said to have the drawback of being less effective if people fail to take the drug as required. Some also have expressed concern that people using this prevention method are subject to potential side effects of the drugs and may be discouraged from using condoms, which experts say is one of the most effective methods of HIV prevention. Events and developments in the early years of AIDS 1981: The CDC reports in its June 1981 edition of MMWR and subsequent

editions that year that an estimated 170 gay men had succumbed to Pneumocystis carini pneumonia and Kaposis sarcoma, a rare skin cancer, over the preceding two years. The CDC studies of these cases cited a serious malfunctioning of the bodys immune system in those who contracted the conditions. 1982: Gay Related Immune Disorder, or GRID, became the rst name to describe what is now known as AIDS. Cases reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., moving beyond clusters of gay men in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles and into groups with no obvious risk factors. 1983: Gay leaders, independent medical researchers and health and social services agency ofcials testify before a congressional committee that the federal response to AIDS was highly inadequate. They issue a plea for the federal government and the Reagan administration to increase federal funding and federal initiatives to ght AIDS. 1985: In late July, actor Rock Hudson stunned the nation when he issued a statement saying he had AIDS and was receiving treatment in Paris that he said he couldnt get in the U.S. He died three months later at age 59. His announcement and death drew massive mainstream media attention to AIDS. His death prompted his close friend, actress Elizabeth Taylor, to help found the American Foundation for AIDS Research to raise funds for AIDS causes. 1988: The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt makes its second trip to Washington in the spring, where its displayed on the Ellipse near the White House. Later that year, about 1,100 AIDS activists staged a protest at the headquarters of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in suburban Maryland outside D.C., denouncing the FDA for taking too long to approve new drugs for people with AIDS. Police arrested at least 176 of the protesters after they blocked access to the FDA buildings main entrance.

We must improve outreach to LGBT youth

Young people still being infected as condom use drops
By ADAM TENNER
If you turn 14 today, you were born in 1997. A former employee, Monica, used to say, I got 10 minutes of HIV education in 10th grade and it wasnt enough. Against all odds, Monica graduated from high school, moved herself away from the wrong crowd and found a healthy distance from her family. But when she got sick, she refused medication because she was already too tired to ght. Monica died of HIV-related causes at age 21. Since the day Monica died, Ive been committed to guring out how to put Metro TeenAIDS (MTA) out of business. Ive also spent much time trying to rethink this ght. How do we get to scale? How can we interrupt our local epidemic? What factors in the environment are preventing 30 years of messages from getting through? And with a skyrocketing STD epidemic and rising pregnancy rates, what other issues might we have to take on to get our HIV messages across? You might be tempted to think that all the answers are on Facebook. The Internet is certainly a valuable tool to reach youth but I think that whats needed is far more basic. First on my list to x is our education system. It is no secret that education in D.C. leaves much to be desired, but, I can tell you with 100 percent certainty, that many kids in D.C. schools do not get good health education. When kids are not getting the right information, we sentence them to make under-informed choices that have kept Washington in the No. 1 spot for HIV, STD, teen pregnancy, obesity, diabetes and the like for many years. While there has been some movement on this front at the school level, we are still missing three key components. First, its still true that not every young person in D.C. learns about HIV, which leaves many youth at risk. Second, there is no formal coordination between public health and health education. And third, we do not currently measure health education like we measure math, reading and science. As an example of how the disconnect between public health and education hurts kids, in 2009 I watched a doctor from Childrens National Medical Center testify about the alarming increase in scaldings

I can tell you with 100 percent certainty, that many kids in D.C. schools do not get good health education.
because small children pull superheated liquids from microwaves. The doctor went on to say that one solution would help to reduce these accidents: families should turn their microwaves sideways. Since that time no lessons were created and disseminated to schools. No mail was sent to parents of students telling them how to protect their kids. We sometimes seem content to just to let kids burn. Which brings me to parents and teachers; they need more information and support. Talking to kids about sex is not easy. At MTA we often say that while we do sex education for a living, its still difcult for us. Yet only D.C. Public Schools currently has a clear and vibrant program to support health teachers in delivering sexual and reproductive health curriculum. And to make matters worse, the D.C. government does not certify health teachers. (Metro TeenAIDS has recently received funding from Venture Philanthropy Partners to expand our work in all D.C. Public Charter Schools.) Let me be honest about this. Despite my chosen profession, my husband and I have a 2-year-old and Im already nervous about the talk. Parents get little support when it comes to talking to kids about sex. And, of course, most of us did not have great role models. You wont be surprised to hear that things havent changed so much since you were a kid (no matter how old you are). But most parents want to do a better job. They want their kids to be safe. In a survey of D.C. parents we did in 2008, 90 percent of parents were concerned about the high rates of HIV and STDs and an equal 90 percent of parents said they were interested in getting training from professionals on how to talk to their kids. The research shows that when given training, parents who start conversations with their kids between 4th and 6th grade said they felt they had increased skills, comfort and condence to ensure open lines of communication with their children around sexual risk taking and that kids were more likely to wait longer before having sex. But what about once kids reach middle school and begin to put more stock in their friends than their parents? Well, for one thing, it is important for parents to know that even when your middle schooler gives you the look, they are still listening. But peers become more and more important as tweens become teens. Before he died, I had a chance to ask Dr. Martin Fishbein, one of the foremost researchers on behavior change, what he would do to end the HIV epidemic in D.C. He said the best return on investment would be to help change peer norms. But to do it effectively, wed have to do it at scale reaching into the social networks of youth and using marketing and messaging to inoculate youth against unhealthy peer norms. As an example, our own local data show that when youth start having sex they use condoms somewhat consistently but that over time, condom use decreases. And this trend continues into adulthood to the point that low condom use is one of the biggest drivers of our local epidemic. So what could we do to keep condom use high? While were just at the beginning of the effort, weve launched a new effort with the Global Business Council on HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria to bring the likes of Nike, Axe body spray, Dove Soap and Gatorade to D.C.s table. Were not talking to them about an old style public health campaign. They dont sell product by talking about the benets of body spray. They make kids feel like they need body spray to get what they really want. And this is most likely where we can really make the most of the Internet and social media. I dont know how many more years of this epidemic well have. I do know that youth are getting infected early every day in our community. And I also know that unless we continue to push for change, ask for support and reach youth when and how they need us, we will continue to bury them. I miss Monica.

30 years later, our lives are forever changed

Improved treatment options but still no cure
By NASEEMA SHAFI
On April 4, 1983, 1,200 men attended the District of Columbias rst public forum on HIV/AIDS at the Lisner Auditorium. Whitman-Walker organized the meeting so that public health leaders could distribute what little information there was to a panicked community. The HIV/AIDS epidemic had started to take root in the District and across the nation. Our lives remain forever changed. Whitman-Walker took care of hundreds of our community members during the initial impact of the epidemic, offering supportive services and as much comfort as we could in that challenging time. We watched as we lost our loved ones and we responded in the best way that we knew how: with compassion. After 30 years of HIV/AIDS, we have lost more than a half million of our loved ones here in the United States to this disease. Current data tells us that more than 3 percent of all adults in the District have been diagnosed with HIV and data suggest that another two to three percent is likely to be infected but that they remain undiagnosed. Within the gay and bisexual community the numbers are more sobering: One in seven gay or bisexual men in D.C. is HIV-positive; one in three black gay or bisexual men in D.C. is infected. Thirty years later, the news about how this complex disease affects our lives remains sobering. We must not lose sight of the continued ght to nd a cure. Thanks to the combined efforts of the LGBT community, our government, researchers, providers of all kinds and others, HIV-positive individuals have a variety of ever-growing treatment options. Treatment regimens offer good outcomes, despite known side effects. Our loved ones are living long, healthy lives and sharing their joy with us. Whitman-Walker provides a wide range of high quality health care services, including primary medical care, dental care, mental health services and even legal help for all members of the community, especially those with HIV. We accept commercial and public insurances and can also nd ways to help those without insurance to access services. We provide care to more than 2,800 HIV-positive individuals. The quality of the care that we provide is high with more of our HIV-positive patients on medication regimens than the national norm. The compassion in our care is evident in the stories our patients tell. We also offer free walk-in HIV counseling and testing at our Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center in Northwest D.C. and our Max Robinson Center in Anacostia. Our community health team goes out into our neighborhoods on the mobile testing unit to provide free HIV testing and education. You may have seen them at your local nightclubs, health fairs or grocery stores. We provide more than 13,000 HIV tests each year. Today, the epidemic continues into its fourth decade. Men who have sex with men face a very different HIV/AIDS landscape than they did in 1983. Those days were darkened by the shock of this new illness and a lack of viable treatment options. Today, HIV is a chronic health condition with ever-growing treatment options. Treatment is not always easy, to which people you love can certainly attest, but treatment can be successful. There is still no cure. That rst public forum is indicative of Whitman-Walkers historical commitment to the LGBT community. We heard the concern and we responded. It was the start of our commitment to the ght against HIV/AIDS. That commitment has never wavered. Whitman-Walker Health will proudly continue to be an active leader in this ght. Know your status. Get tested often. Early treatment leads to improved outcomes.

A condom in a pill bottle?

What the HPTN 052 study means for gay men
By STEPHEN FALLON, Ph.D.
Big news lit up the Internet in recent weeks: HIV treatments seem to block the virus from spreading during sex. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health tracked more than 1,700 couples and found that earlier initiation of (the medicines that ght HIV) led to a 96 percent reduction in HIV transmission to the HIV-uninfected partner. How does this work? Anti-HIV medicines interrupt the virus ability to multiply inside a person. Scientists suspected that if theres less HIV in a person its less likely that any will leak out in their sexual uids. Up until now, most prior studies have traced backwards from outcomes. Researchers couldnt be sure if some other cause might have lowered contagion. This time, they enrolled people rst then watched what happened when they took medicines. That makes this study more convincing. Isnt this great news in the battle against AIDS? Dont ush the condoms yet. It turns out, 97 percent of the couples studied were heterosexual, and half were women. While the protection afforded during straight vaginal sex probably applies to gay anal sex, too, this wasnt specically proven. More importantly, nearly all of the patients studied were living outside the United States. Researchers had difculties enrolling (U.S.) participants into the study. Its possible that patients in the other countries (Botswana, Brazil, India, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand, and Zimbabwe) were more diligent about taking their medicines than typical Western patients are, because the consequences of HIV are starkly more visible in their homelands. Unfortunately, HIV is not a forgiving disease; if patients skip more than a few doses the virus roars back. In the U.S. and Europe, patients who start out faithfully taking HIV medications typically backslide after two years on treatment, dropping to take less than three-out-of-four doses on time. If people skip doses, their virus levels wont drop enough, and any prevention benets will disappear. Worse, if they spread HIV now, it will probably be a more deadly, drug-resistant virus. A 2002 study found that among people unable to fully control their virus, every tenfold increase in HIV levels made them 81 percent more likely to pass HIV to a partner. Whether or not HIV medications stop new infections for U.S. gay men, shouldnt everyone whos HIV positive take medicines right away, to protect their own health? Here, things get much murkier. The question about when to start treatment has been debated for years. Delivered at the right time, anti-HIV medications add years, or even decades to life expectancy. But they also often trigger troublesome side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, sleep problems, sexual dysfunction, and even hair loss. Over time, their effects on the bodys balances can lead to heart attacks and strokes, liver failure, anemia, diabetes, chronic depression, kidney failure, embarrassing changes in body shape and more. So the rationale has been to spare people these effects, and only start prescribing medicines when theyre truly needed to support life. The new NIH study may lead physicians to prescribe HIV treatment even earlier than the nations guidelines currently recommend. But its not yet entirely clear that the earliest possible treatment lengthens life. It might just add more years of side effects without any net benet. Even this weeks study did not nd a denite life benet for those under early treatment. The authors noted, There were also 23 deaths during the study. Ten occurred in the immediate treatment group and 13 in the deferred treatment group, a difference that did not reach statistical signicance. The new study raises an ethical question: who is treatment for? If HIV treatment can truly stop the virus from spreading, then shouldnt it be forced on people living with HIV, whether it adds years to their lives or not? Is treatment supposed to benet the person living with HIV, or protect the person who might have sex with you? Unfortunately, very early treatment for the sake of prevention might cause people to burn through the best medicines early in their infection, leaving nothing to fall back on when their immune prognosis becomes dire. This would consign those living with HIV to additional years living with complications, and possibly a shorter life expectancy, all in the name of protecting others. What if the gay community comes to believe that treatment provides the best rewall against infection? Will guys be less likely to use condoms? Is the pill bottle a more effective condom? Pills cant help when nearly 10 percent of all people newly infected had caught HIV from someone else who was himself also just infected. During this early phase, the tests often cant detect HIV. Medications should be dispensed primarily to benet people living with a disease, not packaged in a rationale to defend the rest of us from their illness.

Normal Heart gave voice to our outrage

Kramer play deserves Tony nod for its courage
playing on Broadway at the Golden Theater through July 10. Four years into the AIDS epidemic when The Normal Heart premiered, gay men who had only recently achieved the freedom to have sex or relationships whenever or with whomever they desired, were dying. If they didnt love one another enough to ght the transmission of and battle for a cure for AIDS, the plague would kill them. Its almost impossible to convey the hysteria, fear, anger, silence and ignorance then surrounding AIDS. A colleague where I worked, a nice woman, thought that you could get AIDS by using a phone that someone with HIV had used. One of my friends, originally from Arkansas, cried for his mother to visit him, as he lay dying from AIDS in a New York hospital. His mother, believing that God was punishing him for being gay, refused to visit. Ronald Reagan couldnt bring himself to utter the word AIDS. Much of the mainstream media (and even some gay publications) didnt cover AIDS, and coverage of people with HIV was often sensationalized. Scientists who wanted funding for AIDS research couldnt get it. Politicians in New York and other cities ignored AIDS, and though Gay Mens Health Crisis was founded in 1981, the silence enveloping AIDS extended to sectors in the queer community. Twenty-six years ago when it premiered, The Normal Heart was guratively a lifeline a voice for people with AIDS and their allies. Largely autobiographical (and drawing from real people and organizations of the time), the play is the story of Ned Weeks (an alter ego for Kramer) and his life during the AIDS crisis from 1981 to 1984. Using vivid, conversational language, The Normal Heart shows Weeks falling in love with Felix, a (ctional) closeted New York Times reporter, working to start an AIDS advocacy group, and ghting with friends and colleagues over what strategies to use (insider, conventional behind-the-scenes lobbying or in-your-face confrontations) to make the queer community, medical establishment, government and the media pay attention to AIDS. Seeing The Normal Heart at the Public Theater then was a shot of (emotional) adrenalin. At a time when few works of art or theater (other than William M. Hoffmans play As Is) portrayed people with AIDS, Kramer through his art vented our outrage and frustration. The play did more than voice anger. The Normal Heart grabbed you by the lapels and demanded that you do something about AIDS. My (late) gay male friend Jonathon, who had HIV, said to me, Finally, somebodys cutting through the bullshit! Often, plays addressing social issues are viewed as being overly political too polemical until a work like The Normal Heart comes along that knocks the wind out of such assumptions. Kramer wrote a play that had an effect, playwright Tony Kushner wrote in a forward to The Normal Heart, published by the Grove Press, to catalyze his society, which we all know theater cant do anymore, except on the rare occasions when it does. Today, The Normal Heart is still relevant. As Kramer writes in a letter given to people when they leave the Golden Theater, there is no cure most medications for HIV/AIDS are inhumanly expensive and government funding for the poor to obtain them is often unavailable. The Normal Heart truly deserves the Tony nod.

What mad Nijinsky wrote/About Diaghilev/Is true of the normal heart/... We must love one another or die, queer poet W.H. Auden wrote in his poem September 1, 1939. These words burned with a lacerating irony when playwright and gay activist Larry Kramers play The Normal Heart, whose title came from Audens poem, opened at the Public Theater in New York in 1985. Audens words retain their force today where The Normal Heart, which has received ve Tony nominations, is

The road ahead is test and treat

We have the tools to control AIDS, but not the political will
By MICHAEL WEINSTEIN
John Lennon said that, life is what happens to you while youre making plans. We know the best-laid plans dont always work out. On the other hand, weve seen that many solutions to problems often come from serendipity. Penicillin, one of the most important scientic breakthroughs of modern times, grew accidentally in a dish. Viagra was intended to treat hypertension; however, it did not, as researchers hoped, reduce blood pressure. In our chase to nd an AIDS vaccine we have tripped upon something even better. For three decades we have dreamed about a shot or a pill that would make it impossible to become infected with HIV without any real success. We were concentrating on how we could wall off the non-infected from the virus by inoculating them with a substance that would cause their body to mount a defense against the virus that would protect them. Unfortunately, HIV is not like most other diseases. The antibodies that our own bodies create are not protective. All the

From Reagan, who would not even mention the word AIDS for six years, to Obama who seems content to preside over an escalating gap in providing lifesaving medications to low-income Americans that now approaches 10,000 people, national leadership has always been sorely lacking.
experimentation using parts of the virus shell or another virus in order to trigger a protective response failed despite tens of billions of dollars in funding spent on it. As that door closed, another one has opened. We now know we can render a person who is HIV-positive virtually non-infectious. A widely reported recent study of couples in which one partner was positive and the other negative showed a 96 percent reduction in new infections of the negative partner when the HIVpositive partner was in treatment and on antiretroviral therapy a truly phenomenal result. So it turns out that we in essence have an AIDS vaccine. However, instead of administering the vaccine to the HIV-negative individual, we must give it to the person who is already infected. Treatment as treatment and treatment as prevention. Out of the billions of people who now populate our world, a fraction has HIV. If we nd them and treat them, new infections will plummet. This has now been conclusively proven. With or without effective prevention methods (which I wholeheartedly support) we can drastically reduce new infections among the negatives while also keeping tens of millions of HIV-positive individuals alive and well. Testing and treating is a winning strategy all around, and it is cost-effective to boot. Efcient methods of treating patients in poor countries for less than $200 a year are a reality. Each HIV-infected

person on the planet that needs medication and medical care could get it for the money that we are already spending on global AIDS. Here in the United States we need to nd the quarter of a million people who are HIV-positive and dont know it and get them into care and treatment. People who dropped out of care need to be persuaded to come back. Testing needs to be dramatically stepped up both in healthcare and community settings. Thirty years into this epidemic Americas response to AIDS is still a failure. From Reagan, who would not even mention the word AIDS for six years, to Obama who seems content to preside over an escalating gap in providing lifesaving medications to low-income Americans that now approaches 10,000 people, national leadership has always been sorely lacking. Today, the road ahead is clear: test and treat is how we can win the battle against AIDS. Marking thirty years of AIDS in America would be as good a time as any for President Obama and Congress to declare a true war on AIDS now that we know we have the tools to control it.

Community in Crisis
By DAVID HOFFMAN
On June 5, 1981, ve unusual cases of pneumonia in patients in Los Angeles were reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly, a newsletter from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the rst notice taken by federal public health ofcials of a deadly virus later dubbed HIV, for human immunodeciency virus that already claimed countless lives, but without a diagnosis pinpointing why. The plague had begun. It just didnt have a name yet. Now, 30 years later, the National Museum of American History, one of the Smithsonian museums on the Mall, the same museum featuring serious history and also pop culture, is marking this anniversary of what became known as the HIV and AIDS epidemic with a three-party display and website beginning June 3. With this rst ofcial notice of the illness, thousands were infected before anyone knew, says the exhibits curator, Katherine Ott, who has been working with an American History Museum team to plan it for the past year and a half. The full pattern simply didnt emerge until later. The public health and scientic as well as political responses to HIV/AIDS during the earliest phase, from 1981 to 1987, with original magazine covers and copies of reports plus lab equipment used to isolate the virus, are the focus of one of the three parts, the showcase to be in the museums Science in American Life exhibition area. Another set of materials, dating from 1985 through 2009 including movie posters, such as for the 1993 lm Philadelphia starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington will show in the museums Archives Center how individuals and society were affected by the epidemic. Finally, on the rst-oor Artifacts Wall, the museum will display a panel from the AIDS Memorial Quilt of the Names Project Foundation, honoring Roger Lyon, who died of complications from AIDS in 1984. A year earlier, Lyons testied before a Congressional hearing, throwing down a challenge to his listeners: I came here today to ask that this nation with all its resources and compassion not let my epitaph read that he died of red tape. But red tape and even worse, reluctance to face facts, often rooted in homophobia, led to denial that anything serious was happening and a crucial delay in addressing the epidemic. For years it was ignored by many in the political establishment, such as President Ronald Reagan, whose rst speech on the subject only came in 1987. Looking back at the early period, as the illness emerged and little was done to combat it, Ott, a lesbian, says I have friends who died, mostly in the 1980s, as a result. Theres a visceral aspect to this that other anniversaries just dont have, for people who lived through this, including those who became sero-positive in the 1980s and are still alive, says Ott, who also has friends and colleagues who are living with AIDS now. Anniversaries like this one are a perfect time to reect, to see where we are today, and how much things have changed, because its almost two generations now since the rst HIV reports. But in HIV years its probably more like seven generations. So much has changed. A month after the rst CDC newsletter notice came a short article in the New York Times, headlined Rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals, and as the year 1981 ended, 121 deaths were recorded with the cause labeled gay-related immune deciency or GRID. The Grim Reaper indeed stalked gay men but as the scourge was fully understood, one caused by a virus passed through blood or bodily uid transmission, its dimensions were nally understood as constituting a global pandemic aficting both genders, and worst of all in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, an estimated 33 million people worldwide were living with HIV-AIDS, with 2.1 million fatalities from the illness that year and also with 2.6 million new infections every year. Today an estimated 600,000 men, women and children in the U.S. have lost their lives to the many complications from AIDS. Although numbers of those infected had been dropping in the U.S. earlier, that has begun to change in recent years. In 2009, District of Columbia HIV-AIDS ofcials reported that at least 3 percent of D.C. residents have HIV or AIDS. D.C. is now often called the nations HIV-AIDS capital. Ott, whose Ph.D. is in the history of science and medicine from Temple University, has been a curator at the museum for 15 years. She acknowledges that the exhibit has been extensively vetted within the museum, due to the controversy last year at a sister Smithsonian museum, the National Portrait Gallery, over the Hide/Seek exhibit there. She said Brent Glass, the History Museum director, because of sensitivity over that, had asked for a review of the HIVAIDS exhibit by the Castle, a reference to the Smithsonian headquarters. Glass now says that, this display will help visitors understand why these events gripped America 30 years ago. Ott says she hopes theres an audience for the new exhibit, especially for younger people whom she says have no idea really what we went through, and who now know that HIV infection is not an automatic death sentence, the way it was 25 or 30 years ago. She says she has interns today who have never even heard of Rock Hudson, the actor whose death from AIDS-related illness in 1985 made him one of the rst celebrities to die from the virus. She sees the exhibit as a chance for younger people to learn about how there were still sodomy laws in half of the states and how homophobia and the fear of this disease was so intense in the 1980s. Of course the virus is not specic to gay male sex, but because it was rst detected there, and spread so rapidly through the gay male community, it became linked in the publics mind to gay males as well as two other marginalized or outsider groups, Haitians and intravenous-drug users. The stigma was deeply set and led to laws being passed that discriminated against people with AIDS in insurance and housing and the workplace. These sanctions were linked to homophobia and often took the form of enforcing traditional attitudes about sexuality, as cities like San Francisco and New York took steps by 1984 to close down bathhouses and sex clubs. But gay males and their allies, often lesbians, began to act when others would not, to care for those stricken with the illness as well as to push back against vicious anti-gay ignorance with public education

Detox time until open bar at JR.s this Wednesday. IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD THE TITLE BE? Jack and Coke Please

CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I would keep my orientation. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL WORLD? I believe past this life, I will be able to live free without stigma and judgment. WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT LEADERS? Can we please stop with all the research facts and get to the human level of all of our problems? Scientic research isnt going to tell me my why someone really doesnt want to wear a condom or why they are afraid of getting their HIV test results. Lets see more community members on your panels and less of the weighty doctors. Although they do great work and continue to contribute a great deal, the guy in the waiting room tells a far different perspective of the epidemic and LGBT rights. The chance to marry Gerard Butler, brunch at Masa 14 and the day that all LGBT people can walk into any church and exchange their vows before God, especially the churches I attended in South Carolina. WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? The LGBT stereotype that annoys the living hell out of me is how AfricanAmerican men are always portrayed in the media. Noahs Arc Jumping the Broom (Noah and Carrie Bradshaw completely exemplify my love life) WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM? I cant think of one, but personally I hate all-white parties. To invest in real estate, Apple and know that the rst guy you date isnt going to be your husband. WHY WASHINGTON? Why not Washington with all the different cultures, races, backgrounds, etc., mixing and interacting on a daily basis? I have a great career, family that I have made and far more opportunities that I wouldnt have received elsewhere.

When Calvin Gerald was growing up in Saint Stephen, S.C., he rarely associated HIV/AIDS with gay sex. It wasnt discussed among his family and he viewed condom use as a mostly straight practice. Even his two uncles who died of AIDS contracted it through drug use. My whole thing was naivet and ignorance, the 32-year-old gay HIV activist says. It was just never discussed and if it was, it was in a negative context. When Gerald contracted HIV from his second boyfriend in early 2008, he wasnt terribly upset. He only cried when he saw his family and friends cry about it. He decided early on to be open about it. Obviously there is a regular stigma associated with HIV and AIDS so I use my life as a testimony or example to tell people, if you have it, you can still date, you can still be active in the community, you can still have an exciting life, you can be as normal as anyone else. I hope it helps other people be open. There is life after HIV. It doesnt have to be a life in secret. Gerald, whos active in the D.C. Centers HIV Working Group and formerly co-chaired it, urges everyone to be tested. He says even if the result is positive, its better than not knowing. Theres stuff out there no matter the result, he says. Not knowing does you more harm. If you are positive, there are services for help, medication, mental health and other support services. Gerald moved to Baltimore for grad school in 2006 then moved to Washington in 2008. Hes single and just started a new job two weeks ago he says its almost his dream job at the American Society for Interior Designers. He lives in Petworth and enjoys number puzzles, kickball, making sushi and blogging in his spare time.

Stability balls can improve your core strength and balance and can even be used as an ofce chair.

A balanced workout
Tips for choosing and using stability balls
The easiest way to know what size to purchase is to test a ball. Sit with the small of your back on the ball with your feet spread hip width and at on the oor. Your hips should be level or just slightly higher than your knees. If you dont have access to a ball, use the following chart: 55 cm 411-54; 65 cm 55511; 75 cm 60-6 7. It is also important that your exercise ball be blown up to the right ination or poundage. Defer to the directions, which generally include a pump for the proper amount of air. Burst-resistant balls can be found at power-systems.com or balldynamics. com. Exercise balls are also now readily available at Wal-Mart and Target stores as well. The best way to thoroughly learn to use an exercise ball is through expert demonstration from a personal trainer. How to use an exercise ball: Exercise balls challenge you by putting your body in an unstable environment. When you sit or lie on a ball, you engage your core muscles such as your abs, lower back and hip exors to help stabilize while performing an activity. While balancing and engaging your core you can add numerous exercises to this element such as abdominal crunches and bench press exercises. By using the exercise ball as a bench you no longer have the stability of a standard bench, thus you additionally engage your core, butt and legs and you essentially get more bang for your buck. Whats more, there are progressions of difculty that you can implement such as balancing on one leg or doing one-arm exercises. And remember virtually any exercise you can do on a seat or lying on a bench you can do on an exercise ball. For abdominal training you can use the balls for just about any ab exercise you can do on the oor and then some. Exercise ball as furniture: Sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair is an effective way for you to improve posture and constantly engage your core. Many companies that sell balls sell accessories such as wheels and back support, which as a progression can be taken away based on ability and core strength until you are just balancing on the ball.

Exercise fads come and go and there is always a new piece of equipment or tool that purports to do something unique and swift. It can be argued that such fads are mere ineffective attempts at a quick x and actually provide very little benet. This is not the case with the stability ball also know as a resist-a-ball or exercise ball. It was originally called the Swiss Ball and invented in 1963 in Italy by physical therapists. The exercise ball is by no means a fad and in fact has become a mainstay in most well-equipped gyms. Stability balls are also popping up in homes and ofces, and here I will give you the skinny on just what these oversized beach balls can be used for. The initial main uses for a stability ball were for abdominal and back strength, core stability and balance. Nowadays the stability ball has a host of uses including, but not limited to, using the ball as a bench that forces the core to work harder to stabilize the ball and the body while performing multiple exercises. The exercise ball can also be used for a variety of stretching exercises and for Yoga and Pilates movements. It is also used in more and more ofces as a chair that keeps the body in a uid state of motion and helps correct posture, not to mention the balance exercises you can perform while at work or on the computer as taking breaks from work is important. Here is what you need to know about choosing and using an exercise ball. Choosing the right size: Size matters.

Mistakes of memory
Tight Old Times production explores longing and frustration
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Both Kates husband and her closest female friend want to possess her and her past. Obsessed with memories, the rivals have shaped recollections stressing their respective importance in Kates life. Whether their stories are even a little bit true is unclear, but in Harold Pinters enigmatic Old Times, now in production at Shakespeare Theatre Company, veracity takes a back seat to the power of relationships and the mistiness of memory. Seated in the starkly white living room of their quiet seaside home, Deeley (Steven Culp), a successful lmmaker, and his beautiful wife Kate (Tracy Lynn Middendorf) discuss the imminent visit of Anna (Holly Twyford), an old friend whom Kate hasnt seen in 20 years and her husband has never met. In fact, Deeley knows precious little about Anna, and the tidbits his wife has offered that Anna is not only her oldest but also her only friend; that they were once at mates in London; that she used to steal Kates underpants have done nothing to endear her to him. Anna arrives. Over drinks (and cigarettes), she and Deeley genteelly set to battle while Kate curled up on the couch like a cat looks on rather amusedly. Initially Anna witty and sociable recounts the fun times she and Kate shared as single young women in London. In reply, Deeley relays how he rst met Kate at a grungy cinema where theyd both gone to see the aptly titled Odd Man Out. Anna remembers things differently. She says she saw the lm with Kate but Deeley wasnt there. Eventually, the conversation escalates into a heated contest of who knows Kate best. They even compete in singing the half-forgotten lyrics of Kates favorite old songs. When Kate leaves the room to bathe, Deeley says he remembers Anna from their London days. He claims they drank at the same pub, and one night he even peeked up her skirt at a party. Initially Anna says it cant be true, but then changes her tune, admitting she was at the party wearing Kates underwear. What to believe? At one point Anna says, There are some things one remembers even though they may never have happened. While Deeleys stories about Kate are tinged with sex (he tends to objectify her), Annas intimate moments/memories are more gentle she strokes Kates arm while asking if she might draw her bath or read aloud to her. Anna now lives as expat with her husband in Sicily, or so she says. Here, very little is for certain. But clearly she was at one time or still is in love with Kate and Kate seems to respond positively to her expressions of tenderness. Feeling relegated to third wheel status, Deeley grows increasingly angry and is ultimately reduced to heaving sobs. Impeccably staged by Shakepeares gay artistic director Michael Kahn, the production is taut and very funny. The three-person cast is rst rate. Making her debut at Shakespeare, Twyford (who is also gay) handles the brief, precise Pinter dialogue beautifully, and rather hilariously lls the playwrights well-known pauses with expectant frozen smiles. Jane Greenwoods costumes nicely illustrate Anna and Kates differences: In addition to a slick chignon, the former wears a rather severe dress with a bow at her throat while the latters casual peach clothes and loose-tting pink robe describe a softer, less dramatic person. Deeley is appropriately tweedy as the accomplished documentarian relaxing away from town. Walt Spanglers bright white set makes a perfect blank slate on which to scribble and erase memories, real and imagined.

JENNIFER HOLLIDAY performs with the Gay Mens Chorus of Washington this weekend.

Holliday to headline Capital Pride

Dreamgirl also sings with Gay Mens Chorus this weekend
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com
Jennifer Holliday is a gracious and easygoing interview. During a lengthy chat, she handles all the softballs with class and is happy to indulge a few could-be-prickly topics too her weight uctuations, career stalls, being religious yet gay friendly. Only one topic elicits exasperation Florence Ballard, the Supremes founding member who was ousted from the group at its peak and died a decade later broke and on welfare. The topic of whether the Dreamgirls story is or is not a dramatization of the Supremes story is, of course, one of the most controversial debates in all of pop culture. The similarities are so profound, even describing it as a theatrical roman a clef seems tame as if its crafters knew exactly how far they could go without getting sued. But while some connected to the Broadway production and 2006 lm version have been eager to draw comparisons, Holliday, whose character Efe has long been associated with Ballard, will have none of it. Holliday cuts off a question about whether she ever met Ballards three daughters to make a few things perfectly clear. This is not the Florence Ballard story, she says. I was heartbroken when Jennifer (Hudson, Efe in the lm) got the SAG and later the Golden Globe and mentioned her. I was thinking, Honey, Florence Ballard had nothing to do with this. I didnt know the Supremes or anybody, I didnt know Florence Ballard, her story wasnt the one in Dreamgirls. Even Florence herself, I mean, she had a nice voice, and Im not trying to brag, but any sort of comparison between her voice and the kind of voice I have or Jennifer (Hudson) has, there would not be any kind of comparison. If anything my personal story, because I could have easily ended up like that, could have easily been more like hers than Efes. Feeling, perhaps, that she came on a bit strong, Holliday backpedals slightly. Im not trying to cut you off on that, but its just something they made up, especially with the movie, she says. Its something that would sound better for them as a story. Holliday, who performs two shows this weekend with the Gay Mens Chorus of Washington for its 30th anniversary and will replace previously announced Kelly Rowland as the Capital Pride headliner, says she wouldnt have advised Hudson to mention Ballard in her acceptance speeches. Hudson didnt when she won the Oscar. She probably was not very well schooled and very well rehearsed at that time about what things to say, Holliday says. If you go back and look at the countless number of interviews, you see a lot of things were said. It is confusing. It confused me at times too. And I cant really say what she knew or didnt know because I wasnt privy to any of that, but whatever information she had was wrong. Ballards founding Supremes member Mary Wilson, who said she loved Dreamgirls and even called her memoir Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme, is another prickly subject for Holliday. Oh yes, we all met Mary backstage, Holliday says, remembering her nearly fouryear, early-1980s run with the show. She was saying how did we know it was her story and that Lorrell was her and all that kind of stuff. I kind of took it with a grain of salt. Im not gonna call Mary a liar, Im just saying we all have our own truth and our own perspectives and you see she went on to call her book Dreamgirls. Holliday remembers playing Vegas later at the same time Wilson was in town. She said it only added to the confusion. She had a sign up that she was the original Dreamgirl. I was going to be at the Flamingo, and I was thinking, OK, youre a Supreme, Im the original Dreamgirl. It was like everybody was confused about their own history. It was much less an issue with Diana Ross, Holliday says. Holliday knew her because they shared a manager Motowns legendary Suzanne de Passe. Ross never saw the stage Dreamgirls and told David Letterman she watched the lm version with her attorneys. She refused to come (see the stage production), Holliday says. That was ne because it really wasnt her story. Holliday is excited about her appearance this weekend. The concert was a year in the making. Shell perform her Dreamgirls standards and the Chorus will back her on two covers Lean On Me and I Believe I Can Fly. The concert will open with a oneact musical that explores themes of family. It was commissioned especially for this show. Jeff Buhrman, artistic director, says Holliday has been great to work with. Everyone in the Chorus is extremely excited that we get the opportunity to share the stage with someone who is such an inspirational singer, he says. Holliday says gays supported her when nobody else would. This community loved me unconditionally not matter what, she says. There would be no Jennifer Holliday or denitely no Dreamgirls without the gay community.

How to cope with rejection

It happens to everyone and doesnt mean failure
By MEGHANN NOVINSKIE & KIM ROSENBERG
Rejection. Its a hard, strong word. Even when you mutter it out loud, its harsh. When you think of rejection or being rejected, you think of colleges that declined your acceptance, you think of your rst credit card maxing out and declining a purchase, and you think of being dumped. One of the most defeating feelings is when you are overcome with sadness and resentment when your partner says, We gotta talk and you know the topic of conversation before he says it. Lets face it: Rejection happens to everyone. Even your hottest ex has been rejected. We want to address a deeper issue, not if youve been rejected or how many times, but how you deal with being rejected. Ask yourself what your response would be to the situations below and think, has rejection hurt or helped me? Situation No. 1. Youve experienced a time when your stomach drops, you get a little nervous, and the eye contact between the two of you sends shivers up your spine. You nally get the courage to ask him/her out, and he/she says no. What was your reaction? Were you devastated or did you brush it off and know it wasnt meant to be? We agree its hard hearing no. But at this stage of the game, its not the end of the world. Swallow your pride, move on, and dont over think it. Take this rejection and realize its OK to be disappointed. Better now than later, right? Situation No. 2. You have a great rst date. You think there is chemistry, sparks are ying, and maybe you even get a kiss. As the night ends, you say, I would love to see you again and he gives you some type of stupid excuse that hell be out of town or busy, but hell be in touch. You clearly read him wrong. This situation is worse than situation No. 1 because he accepted your offer to go on a date, you spent three hours together, and then decided he doesnt want to go out again. Ouch. Major blow to your ego. Remember, relationships are two sided. He is actually doing you a favor by cutting the cord now before things get complicated. There is no reason for us to just go through the motions at this point in our mature dating life. Take this rejection and a couple deep breaths, go to a couple extra meditation classes, and keep at it. Theres someone out there for everyone. If you had that kind of chemistry once, youll see it again and now you can be more perceptive. Situation No. 3. Youve dated for X amount of time. Maybe you are living together, or maybe you just became #1 on his/her speed dial. Regardless, you got dumped by someone you truly cared about, or loved. Now what? You feel rejected, lost, sad, hurt. Think about it as much as you want to mourn your relationship, its time to turn your hurt feelings into a helpful lesson learned. Maybe your relationship wasnt meant to be from the start. Did you think about the pros and cons of your relationship? He/she left you for a reason. Maybe he/she uncovered some deeper personal issues you need to address. What is the real reason its over and what are you going to do about it? Lets be clear your relationship ending doesnt mean you need to jump into another relationship to x the feelings of rejection and resentment from your last one. Rejection turns to rebound which turns to rejection again. Dont be the jerk that was rejected and turns around to take it out on someone else. Now, how many times have you wanted to leave your partner but he dumped you rst? Now you end up feeling rejected. Remember that you sustained a healthy relationship for X amount of time. You can either do your reection, hire experts to get you to your next stage in life, and move on. Or you can wallow in the reject pool, cry that your relationship ended, and never move forward. By the way, was he/she really the best for you? Probably not. Rejection does not mean failure. Unfortunately, many people believe this is the case, which can lead to many personal issues, including a bruised ego. You absolutely can be strong and learn a lot from being rejected. Remember that rejection is normal, so welcome it and use it to understand how to not make the same mistake twice. Questions? Write us at advice@washblade.com.

program, a Club program and a Competitive program. With the Eastern seaboard colleges being chock-full of crew teams, the Strokes also established a program for rowers who are in D.C. for the summer. The College Rower program offers the athletes a chance to take advantage of their time off from studies. Many of the alumni from this program have returned to college and posted their best times. The Club is a member organization of the United States Rowing Association (USRowing) which is 16,000 members strong and recognized as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. This weekends Stonewall Regatta does not just promote rowing in the LGBT community, it also kicks off the circuit of adult sprint race competitions in the mid-Atlantic region. Community outreach has been a longstanding tradition for the D.C. Strokes. Brian Heath, president, says 2011 brings three new ventures for the rowers. The Strokes, along with USRowing and the Anacostia Community Boathouse Association has formed a partnership with Athletes Without Limits. The program is called America Rows and will be a launching pad for athletes with intellectual disabilities and Paralympic dreams. Volunteers from the Strokes are training the athletes for several 2011 regattas. More information on the program can be found at www.athleteswithoutlimits.us. This year saw the Club offer scholarships to economically challenged individuals who were granted access to their Learn to Row program. Awards were granted to two members of the LGBT community which enabled them the opportunity to row with the Strokes. Also on the docket for the Strokes this summer is a partnership with the D.C. Department of Parks & Recreation. Coming on the heels of lling all 80 slots in their own Learn to Row program, the Strokes will be volunteering instruction for city youths in a week long Learn to Row program. Watch the Strokes in action this weekend on the Anacostia. For anyone who doubts the competitiveness of this group, they won a gold and two bronze medals at the 2009 US Masters Nationals and are always looking to better themselves. With no previous rowing experience, he became a member and is now competing in regattas. The Club began in 1991 with eight gay runners looking for a cross-training activity. It has grown into a multifaceted LGBT sports club offering all sorts of programs for all levels of rowers. The club is based at the Anacostia Community Boathouse and is entering its 20th season boasting over 150 members with more than 2,000 alumni. A lovable wooly tale

Lesbian leaves city life behind to run sheep farm
to outlaw the sale of wool but colonists managed to outwit the Brits and wool gathering became patriotic. Sheep show up everywhere in our language, Friend says, and theyre good for supper, of course, but its their wool that she fell in love with. Because of the price of eece, she says, many farmers shear their sheep and throw the wool away. Most small operations wont get rich on their wool, but Friend discovered the rich colors of wool dyes. Although she rst makes fun of ber freaks (knitters who bleat rhapsodically about wool bers), she couldnt wait to see what her sheep produced. But life on the farm isnt always laid back. Where theres livestock, theres dead stock, says Friend. Animals, like humans, dont always do what you want them to do; theyre never born at convenient times; and sometimes, they get sick. When these things happen, even Backup Farmers do their best for their animals even if it means giving those animals up. Imagine a serene pasture lled with contented (nameless) sheep. Then imagine a reluctant shepherdess at the helm, add llamas, cats and dogs, chickens and a peacock, frisky calves, knitters, and Elvis, and youve got a good yarn called Sheepish. Author Catherine Friend gives her readers a sense of the bucolic. She lulls us into total serenity with her poetic descriptions of her ock and then she knocks us upside the funny bone with asides that are dyed-in-thewool hilarious. In between, Friend has a way of bringing tears to our eyes before she pulls us back to the funny farm. If a taste of the country is what you crave this summer, if youre a farmer or a wannabe, a knitter, or just love a wooly tale, heres a book youll enjoy. Sheepish is perfect for ewe.
SHEEPISH: TWO WOMEN, FIFTY SHEEP & ENOUGH WOOL TO SAVE THE PLANET By Catherine Friend $16 / 263 pages

Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old. She lives in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at bookwormsez@yahoo.com.

You tried everything. When you had trouble with insomnia the other night, it seemed like nothing would lull you back to sleep. Warm milk tasted bad. That previously boring book on your bedside table suddenly turned intriguing. Even infomercials held your interest, so you started counting sheep. Then you got to wondering why sheep? Why not count cows or dogs? Is it because sheep are, well, like sheep? Author Catherine Friend wondered that herself because she has a ock of them on her Minnesota farm, and in her new book Sheepish, she writes of the good and the ba-a-a-ad, the wild and the wooly. Though her grandmother raised them on a Montana ranch, Catherine Friend had little experience with sheep that is, until her partner, Melissa, wistfully admitted her dream of owning a farm and raising the critters. And thus it came to pass that Catherine had a little lamb. Fifteen years later, Friend has morphed from City Girl to Backup Farmer. It hasnt been a gentle-as-a-lamb transformation, but Friend now appreciates her ock. Ovines have a long history in North America, she says. Sheep were shipped to the New World in 1609 and within 60 years, there were more than 100,000 sheep on our shores. English lawmakers tried

Reagan slow to address AIDS crisis

campaigns to promote what came to be known as safe sex. The museum exhibit showcases this entire period, with a focus on several of the stages rst, as a public health crisis, when the word was being passed about how AIDS was transmitted and how to prevent

the diseases spread; and then as a scientic mystery, when a high-stakes international race began, to nd the cause of the illness; and also as a political ashpoint, when some voices were raised condemning homosexuality as a sin and sometimes even that AIDS was a suitable punishment for such infractions. Other voices challenged Reagan administration inaction, especially in

1987 when activists took to the streets in civil disobedience through ACT UP the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power, with its familiar pink triangle and its emblematic slogan of Silence = Death. Depicting these stages are magazine covers such as one from The Advocate in 1981, with its front-page headline question, Is The Urban Gay Male Lifestyle

Hazardous to your Health? about the new diseases attacking gay men. Another cover story headlined Epidemic, about the mysterious and deadly disease called AIDS appeared in Newsweek in April 1983. Ott says that its lead author decided to focus on the illness partly as a result of the fact that he had a brother who was gay and who later died from AIDS complications. Other items on display are the early reports and pamphlets charting the course of efforts to combat the disease. The museum has collected what Ott calls a lot of the paper ephemera, much of which was educational, to get the word out, including efforts to promote safe-sex practices, such as a booklet titled How To Have Sex in An Epidemic, co-authored by Richard Berkowitz and Michael Callen, advocating the use of condoms and other measures for safe sex; and a pamphlet from 1982 titled Healthy Sex is Great Sex. Also shown is an early safe-sex teaching manual, Teaching AIDS: A Resource Guide on AIDS, co-authored by a social worker Marcia Quackenbush, whom Ott says began working in sex education with gay youth in San Francisco and shes still active. Quackenbush in fact will be among the bloggers at the exhibits website, which will log in new comments from experts about the exhibit once or twice a month. The exhibit is expected to run until November, though no denite closing has been set yet; it will depend on when the museums West Wing, where the materials on display will be housed, must be closed for renovations. Some of the displayed material comes from the extensive collection of research materials donated in 2008 to the museum by the writer John-Manuel Andriote, author of the 1999 book Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America. Andriote, who lived in Washington for several decades until returning home to Connecticut in 2007, completed in 2010 a series of interviews to update the book, which will be re-issued later this year in a new edition. Andriote, who learned he was HIVpositive in 2005, says that in his interviews last year he was, Startled to hear gay men now say that their sense of the crisis has passed, that HIV has become normal, a harsh fact of life but not what denes or necessarily ends it. The exhibit also displays antibody tests from 1985 and condoms distributed to gay men in the early and mid-1980s, with a stress on the importance of their use to combat AIDS. One section shows how those test kits emerged from the research in 1983-1984 of two physicians, Luc Montagnier (Pasteur Institute, Paris) and Robert Gallo (National Institute of Health, Bethesda), whose pioneering lab work led to them being recognized as the codiscoverers of HIV as the virus responsible for the cause of AIDS. They co-patented the test kit and split its royalties.

An opportunity revisited: seller-assisted financing

By Valerie M. Blake Prudential Carruthers realtOrs
I bought my first house in 1977. The polite among you will giggle, roll your eyes and exclaim, But you must have been just a baby! The rest of you? Well, I know what youre thinking. In truth, I was young, recently divorced, svelte and sassy (still sassy). My annual salary was $8,925. Gasoline cost 65 cents a gallon. Gerald Ford was nearing the end of his term as President and Elvis was dead (or at least missing). Former Iowa Congressman Fred Grandy had just debuted as Gopher on The Love Boat and a fun Saturday night out involved heading over to Margaritaville to drink a Sloe Gin Fizz and dance The Hustle in platform heels. The interest rate on my first mortgage loan was just under 9 percent. When I purchased my next house two years later, my rate had increased to 11.75 percent. By 1981, the average interest rate for a 30-year fixed term mortgage loan had risen to an all-time high of 16.63 percent. For some consumers, the rates were as high as 22 percent. So did the housing market collapse? Did people stop buying homes? Did sellers just throw up their hands in despair? To be sure, some did, but the rest of us put on our collective thinking caps and got creative! So lets do it again, folks. Im not talking about no money down, negative amortization, pay what you can, or just dont pay if its inconvenient. Im talking about seller financing and other creative avenues to ensure that qualified buyers can still get into homes they love. Granted, some of us still owe more on our mortgages than our homes are worth, but that wont last forever given the recent rate of appreciation in our area of 6 percent per annum. And believe it or not, there are people out there who did not max out their equity, or who bought homes 30 years ago or more and have already burned their paid mortgages while dancing around the fire with glee. There are risks involved to be sure and you will want to consult your attorney, your tax advisor and your financial planner before proceeding, but consider the possible advantages before shunning the idea completely. The interest you can get on a mortgage note will be well above that which you can get on a Certificate of Deposit or a savings account. An installment sale (selling over time) may have tax advantages if you anticipate capital gains. You can time a balloon payment of the remaining balance with retirement, college expenses for children or other long-term financial goals. It opens your home to a plethora of self-employed buyers who are otherwise well qualified but whose income is difficult to quantify from year to year. If your buyer defaults, you can foreclose on the loan, get the home back and resell it (even at a higher price if the market continues to improve). Your equity can help a small-scale developer renovate homes for first-time or low-income buyers and you will be paid back quickly after the property is renovated and re-sold. If you end up needing your cash sooner than your note specifies, you can

sell the loan to another investor or on the secondary loan market. You dont have to make a loan for the entire purchase. Remember the 8010-10 loan where the buyer contributed a 10 percent downpayment and a bank or mortgage company funded 80 percent? You can offer to finance only the remaining 10 percent or some other portion of the total sales price based on your comfort level with the buyers credit and payment history. You may quickly dispose of an otherwise unsellable property that does not qualify for traditional financing in line with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac or private mortgage insurance underwriting guidelines. A buyer may offer a higher price for your home just for the privilege of obtaining private financing. Even if you find that the risks of sell-

er financing outweigh the advantages, check your loan documents to see if your loan is assumable. Mine is. This is also common for many FHA mortgages and allows a buyer to take advantage of a streamlined process to ante up the difference between the sales price and your current loan balance and take over your remaining payments, potentially saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars in closing costs and interest. As credit restrictions grow in the wake of short sales and foreclosures across the country, well-qualified home buyers continue to need more options. Consider being the banker that blue, pin-striped suit might look good on you.
