Its All bout Mannin Mainthargal is a personal project of VNi and bliss. The aim of this project is to compile the works of Malaysian Indian/Tamil artists into a presentable magazine. Each edition will consists sixteen Mannin Mainthargal artists from all genres. We have tried our utmost best to cite the information provided in this magazine to its original source, thus if we have failed to do so at some parts, please highlight it to us. Since, our project is still in an infancy period, do forgive us if we make any mistakes and do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything. We hope you will enjoy this as much as we enjoy making it. (Halt And Take Notice) in 2002. Then a trio comprising Coco Nantha, Behug Mathan and Dejavu Hari, Boomerangz supplied a refreshing genre to a music arena dominated by rock and pop. The local Indian hip-hop singers, while initially dabbling in DJ-ing and naturally maintaining the MC-ing and B-boy-ing, discarded the graffiti art aspect of the culture. Bending the Tamil language into hip-hop tracks was in itself a laborious process, which perhaps left little time for the creation of other art forms. The language itself is adequately supple to fit into hip-hop; metered verses and beats are very much part of Indian music and poetry. But to make it work within a framework that demands vigorous pacing and placing calls for the singer, songwriter and wordsmith to merge with one and another. The poet must become the musician as well while respecting the sanctity of the Tamil language, a matter that is upheld with a messianic zeal by the purists. Musicians can be created ... someone can teach you the chords and you can become a musician but to be a poet you need to create from the heart. There is a fine line between a poet and a musician: a poets work, even of medieval times, transcends generations, which may not be so for that of a musician, offers Balan Kashmir, 27, whos from Klang, Selangor.

Four local rappers share their thoughts on the evolution and global ascendancy of Malaysian Indian hip-hop and its future. by Nantha Kumar (The Star Online - 2011, March 27) THE Indian strain of Malaysian hip-hop is making its presence felt all the way to India and beyond. Not since Vasudevan has there been such an intense interest in Indian musicians from this nation. As such, now seeing rappers such as Yogi B and Natchatra lip-synching for A-list heroes and heroines on screen feels like a triumphant moment when the glass ceiling is smashed. The Malaysian Indian music industry had its coming-of-age when the rockers of The Keys ripped their way out and Lock-Ups popmeisters romped. Their hip-hop counterparts, however, should be credited with bringing down the wall that separates the talent here from the music-makers in India. The Origins The first hip-hop song in Tamil or at least part of it is commonly believed to have come via 1998s Vallavan by Poetic Ammo. Yogi B, C. Loco, Land Slyde and Point Blanc made up the Malaysian hit group between the late 1990s and the turn of the last decade, holding immense appeal amongst a cross-cultural audience in the country. During interviews with four members of the present crop of local hip-hop performers not too long ago, I find our discussion on the topic, quite bizarrely, taking us back to the mid-1990s, to the Johor Baru-based Galax-Cs Kamini. Veterans Coco Nantha of Boomerangz and Chakra Sonics Viveck as well as their younger counterparts Rabbit Mac and Balan Kashmir all remember the song Kamini as the earliest Tamil hip-hop prototype. For official purpose, the first Tamil hip-hop album here was Boomerangzs Nil Gavvanee The homegrown playback singer gained fame in Indias Tamil film music industry in the 1980s and mid-1990s as the voice of the leading silver screen stars. His demise on Feb 20 at the age of 66 now assumes an even greater meaning. It is hard enough as it is to realise such an ambition in an enormously competitive environment and to have achieved it as an outsider in India only adds to Vasudevans esteem. The difference between him and the hip-hop artistes is that the late stalwart had to leave our shores to obtain his celebrity whereas the reverse is true for the latter. The younger group is currently being courted by South Indian film worlds prominent and emerging composers. Musicians from the subcontinent have been curious about their brethren here since the birth of the Malaysian Indian music industry in the last decade. That curiosity saw the infusion, and in some cases whole replication, of Malaysian elements into their soundtrack albums. Pioneering bands such as The Keys and LockUp in the late 1990s were offered to perform in India but fame eluded them even though their albums outsold a handful of movie-related releases.

Before we knew rap, we were aware of the compositions of Arunagirinathar and Kamban (the 15th- and 9th-century Tamil poets respectively) and some of which are identical to rap in their rhymes and rhythms. This is the link that we see within us and that draws us to connect with rap, opines Viveck, the 34-year-old native of Alor Star, Kedah, who founded Chakra Sonic with his brothers Jack and Vijay in 2002. Chakra Sonics debut effort Kalai Oru Por (The War Of Art) the first proper diss album in Tamil with a homage to Eminems Stan being a gem of an ode similarly paid deference to the elegance of the language and had reconciliation as its central thrust. In all, they see themselves as poets first. Labour pains and identity We have been listening to the old school hiphop and wondering how we could convert it into Tamil. We were attracted to Gangstas Paradise (Coolios hit 1995 rework of Stevie Wonders Pastime Paradise) and tried something similar, the result being Moxsha (from Nil Gavvanee or Halt And Take Notice). It was a painstaking effort, of which it took us six months to make a single song and four years to complete the album, recalls Coco Nantha, 34, the lead rapper of Boomerangz who hails from Kerling, Selangor. Most albums are trilingual, with Tamil naturally taking precedence over English and Bahasa Malaysia. The use of words in the national language reflects their Malaysian upbringing and mannerism. This also adds uniqueness to their music. Chakra Sonic went a step further by including two tracks rendered fully in Bahasa Malaysia in their second album, Kodi Kelviyin Bathil or An Answer To A Million Questions, in 2004. Sang Puteri received heavy rotation on radio stations while Ulek Mayang sampled the music of the eponymous traditional Malay dance. One of Rabbit Macs songs, Kuku Bee in his Ma Carrotz album released in 2009, meanwhile, used nadaswaram (long oboe native to carnatic music of South India) to lead the song for that Article The Capital of Tamil Hip Hop classical Indian flavour.

Otherwise, they may find it difficult to forge an identity as a genuine rapper. He feels that at present hip-hop is all about technique and business. Potential rappers have a wider access to music-making, a larger pool of composers and readily available technology that makes it possible for most to fulfil their dreams.

absolutely no foundation or inclination in music. But he admits that they have money and they get their singles out with or without him. Viveck is, however, sanguine about the prospects for Malaysian hip-hop artistes, urging them to think of innovative ways of selling their albums. He cites Balan Kashmirs direct-selling method (see sidebar Space for expansion) as a case in point. The power, he concludes, is in the hands of fans to assist in the direction of the music.

Balan Kashmir has worked as a solo rapper/ song writer

with many established names and upcoming acts which he was privileged to meet and greet alongside his years of climbing the ladder of success. He has written alongisde acts such as KLG Sqwad, Pete Teo, Joe Flizzow, Elvira, Sasi the Don, Phlowtron, Reefa, Sakti, Saran, Chakrasonic, Da Monsta, Rabbit Mac, Psychomantra, Emcee David, Shabd Clique and other talents. Kashmir was blessed with the opportunity to work with producers such as DNavigator, Damian Shorty Soul, ILLegal, Jamie Wilson, DJ Uno and DJ Fuzz as the years passed. More songs and mix-tape projects are in the pipelines, as he speaks. Doing his part for the local music scene, Kashmir had a ahnd in co-organizing a major unity project which involved some 50 Malaysian msuicians, actors and acresses dubbed Malaysian Artistes for Unity. He was featured in the theme song and video which was directed by Yasmeen Ahmad and two government related projects Zoom Malaysia theme song and a video for Tourism Malaysia in 2008 as well as Satu Suara (One Voice) theme song and a video for the Kementerian Belia dan Sukan in 2009. Balan Kashmir has roped in his long time producer, Dnavigator to star work on his solo album and is currently performing live shows with the support of DJ Mastermind. The project is scheduled for release in late 2011. The concept behind the album would see Kashmir exploring his mind and two languages Tamil and English. He entwines his rhymes within both languages. This is sure to set him far ahead of the competition due to it being done with such finesse. By setting up the blueprint of the coming-of-age album, Balan Kashmir is ready to prove to the world a type of swagger only a true born macha possesses. Stay tuned to witness the aftermath. ...as solo In 2000, Darkkey, the lead vocalist of The Keys, departed from the band and pursued a career as a solo artist with Alai Osai. His departure also saw Boy MJ, Loges de Arween and Anande de Mondok follow Darkkey in suit. They formed a band named Black Blood Brothers with Boy MJ assuming the role as guitarist, Loges de Arween as the bassist while Anand played the keyboard. The Black Blood Brothers performed as backup musicians for Darkkey shows or concert with Alai Osai. The first solo album of Darkkey, Arakana, was considered a major hit nationwide. Alai Osai who held copyrights for the album manage to sell more than 80,000 copies. As a result, Darkkey was awarded the title King of Samba Rock and it is justified with his record sales.

The essence of sambarock was captured in the first album titled Akkamaage. The album was considered highly successful in the Malaysian Indian music scene as it recorded more than 180,000 copies sold. This subsequently gave birth to a thriving local music scene. sia. I learnt all I needed to learn about music from my dad, Sunder. But I went deep into Carnatic vocals under the tutelage of my vocal teacher, Elango, he adds. Dhilip, an ardent fan of renowned musical composers Illayaraja and A.R. Rahman, started his musical journey as a stage singer, performing at small shows. His first recording opportunity arose when he sang for local group Rogkwave for its Naveenam album. He went on to form his own company, Dhilip Varman Productions, to produce jingles and local soundtracks for Indian telefilms. His productions have since appeared in local films November 24, Kanngal and Ivanthan Hero. He even bagged the Best Male Vocalist at last years MIMI (Malaysian Indian Music Industry) Awards. Dhilip produced his first album last year, Kanavellam, which featured songs composed and arranged by him. Former Works Minister Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu also contributed a poem that was used as lyrics for the song, Kanavugal Varum (Dreams Will Come). My album distributors, One Vision Entertainment, hooked me up with Datuk. We made an appointment, as I was interested in getting his permission to use a poem that was featured in Makkal Osai (a local Tamil daily). But when I met him, he said the poem was inappropriate, and he instantly wrote a new one for me, he recalls. Dhilips next album, Meendum Meendum (Again And Again), which he fully composed and arranged, will feature Indian playback singer Karthik. We flew to Chennai to record Karthiks vocals for the song. Sollisai should be tattooed on his body, Dr Burn aka Athiruban Manoharan Naicker is not to give up on Tamil Sollisai and wants to make Malaysian music to be recognized internationally. Dr Burn known for his punchy and racy Tamil rap started his music life in 1997. His introduction into hip hop was when he and some of his friends formed the underground rap group called Worst Media Clique (W.M.C.). During this period, he decided to further strengthen his music knowledge and studied audio engineering and subsequently worked for Malaysias well known record label Alai Osai. During this time, after gaining four years of experience in the Tamil Music Industry, he came out with a debut album entitled Dr Burn, which was under Alai Osai. In addition, while working with Tribe Studios, he worked with most of the Tamil Industrys leading artists. Eventually, Dr Burn got together with Yogi B when he was working on Lock Up Gunas solo project. I heard his stuff and knew he was in said Yogi B, who then approached Emcee Jesz, who was a Club DJ. The triangle was completed, thus formed Yogi B and Natchatra. Vallavan was launched on 1st September 2005 and went on to become a big hit worldwide. They gained further prominence after performing in Star Vijay Awards. Music Composer Dharan approached Dr Burn to rap in his composition. The track Oh Nenje became an instant hit. Soon opportunities came from every nook and corner of the world! And the rest as they often say is history.

The major challenge faced was preserving the originality of hip hop yet retaining the essence of Tamil to be sure that it did not cross borders and replicate American hip hop remixed with Tamil. To reinforce the glory of Tamil ethnicity and music, various instruments and themes that truly represent the Tamil culture were utilized. The ideal example in the album would be the song Vel Vel, singing praises of Lord Muruga. Yes, thats right, a rap song for our very own Tamil God, Lord Muruga. Sara has covered it all. After the one-year long production followed by a six-month long post production, Sara states he is ecstatic about the sound quality of the songs. While some tracks were recorded in Malaysia and some in Chennai, the mixing and mastering of the album were done at Masterdisk Studios in New York. Amazingly, KG comes to us from the same studio as of Jay Z, Beyonce Knowles and other top hip hop artists hence the international standard of the mastered tracks are no surprise.KG doesnt limit itself to youths but intends to influence a legion of followers. Sara recalls the awe he was in when he saw people from all walks of life savour a live show in Chennai by Emcee Jesz, Yogi B and Dr Burn. What turned out to be a shocking revelation for the team of Studio 8 production & records was the blend of young, middle aged and elderly at the show regardless of sex and status. Research in their own best possible ways further revealed that Tamil hip hop was fancied by people from different social backgrounds. Kash kicked off his career as a recording artist
in the year of 2006 where he gathered forces with two other fellow Villanz members by releasing his first debut album entitled Asthivaram. . Their tracks made magic by continuously remaining in various music stations by remaining at the Top Ten charts for a long period of time with continuous support and response. He then decided to take a major step to compose all the tracks which he was going to release in his second album entitled Saagavaram in 2008. Saagavaram turned out to be a major hit thus, boosting his confidence to proceed with his largest and best album yet entitled Vaathiyar The Kingdom of Janmavaram earlier this year. Kash and his team have also carved the heart of many award nominators, a few of them include winning the Best Newcomer Award at the Malaysian Indian Music Industry (MIMI) in 2007 for Asthivaram and the Most Popular Album Award at the Raaga Radio Awards in 2009 for Saagavaram. The Villanz have also gone beyond the Indian industry and were nominated for the Best Indian Album at Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM 15). Kash has done his fair share in featuring for local talents which include featuring in a track for the album Maya Kalaignar with Yogi B and Vassan in 2007. In 2008, he featured for another blasting track entitled Life is a Mystery for the current youngest talent found in Malaysia, Shruthi Jayashankar, which grabbed the Best Dance Song Award at Asia Voice Awards. In 2009, he produced a track with his protg, Maney, entitled Aayirathil Oruvan, which has also been featured in the Villanz third album Vaathiyar. Kash has also ventured into the acting stream by making an appearance for the movie Aanava Aattam. Currently standing as the Executive Producer of V-Hommiez Ent, Composer, Sound Engineer and Recording Artist. BIOGRAPHY

The name Saravana Kumar Narayanan will probably draw blank stares from many but would you believe, if this relatively unknown person is currently setting the music industry ablaze and is looking to be a force to be reckoned with. Born Saravana Kumar, he is fondly and popularly known as Saran in the music circuit and to the public alike. To many, he may simply look like the guy next door with his simple and charming ways but be warned that one cannot simply disregard this unassuming lad as Saran is the current flavor. His music speaks volume and he has one hit after another to his ever-growing credit. Presently, his songs, Kollathey and Paarvai are garnering regular airplays in THR Raaga, with Kollathey hitting numero uno on two of its chart shows. Sarans height of success was neither achieved overnight nor was it a breeze. It took him a couple of tumbles before he hit the right notes. Sarans foray into music started in his twenties, when few of his friends cajoled him into joining Bakat Raaga Taala, a talent show. The talent quest turned out to be a catastrophe, simple because he was too nervous to even hold the microphone properly, what more to sing. The show, although not one of his glorifying moments, was a blessing in disguise, because amongst the crowd, someone spotted the abundance of talent within the man. Before he knew what hit him, he was trying out for audition by rendering the song Kannae Kalai Maanae from the movie Mondram Pirai. His voice mesmerized the talent scouts and it gave him his debut TV performance Fiesta Deepavali TV2 (1999), which was the much-needed platform to get his music career soaring. He steadily moved on from one singing venture to another but never the one to be content with his disposition, he took a bold move by participating in ASTRO Vaanavils Paadalthiran Potti 2003. He advanced to the final stage and vowed the judges and audience by playing the tabla, keyboard and guitar while singing one of his very own composition Kaathaliyae Saukiyama, in the talent-time category, displaying a creativity never seen before. He released his singles Kaathaliyae Saukiyama and Alaipayuthey, in which he collaborated with sultry vocalist Elvira. Both his singles were well received by the masses and slowly a fan base for his music took shape, there was no stopping him and he was spurred to come with more upbeat tracks. music flowed in his blood although he considers himself a late bloomer as far as singing is concerned, because in his family everyone started singing much earlier. His entire family is musically inclined as they sing the Bhajan, a religious song of praise, while he was the percussionist in the family. This Seremban-born bloke recognized the love for music in his early years, at a tender age of 3. Saran played the bongo and was surprisingly good at it, thus he used to accompany his dads bhajan and as age caught on, he began varying his musical instruments. From the recorder in his school days to the tabla, a keyboard and the guitar. He learnt playing these instruments simply by observing others and perfected his skills in it through years of practice. The former bankers flair for music is obvious as he is the epitome of music- he breathes, lives and works on music and his profession as a jingles producer provides him with the perfect cover to be close to his passion. His many creative ideas are the backbone of numerous multinational advertising giants like Celcom, Telekom Malaysia, Babas among others and has won him multiple awards. He has, to his name 5 Kancil Awards, the highest award accorded for local advertisement, which is akin to the Oscars. In 2006 he received a bronze award, also one apiece for best language and merit while 2007 proved to be fruitful for him as he bettered his records and received two awards, a gold and silver respectively. Sarans recipe for making good music therein lies in his simplicity. He lives his life by this mantra and believes anything done in moderation will be a success and that is what has molded him into the musician he is. By April 2003, Tiban continued with his foundation of music production and recording in Effecthory Studio Sdn. Bhd. And followed his Diploma in Human Resource Management in Optima College Phoenix International University of Australia. Finally, on early January 2005, Tiban pursued in the field of media technology audio engineering, filming & graphic designing in the School of Audio Engineering (SAE). Tiban started his journey in this music industry as an assistant music director and sound engineer in Pro Tools Studio Productions Company with the famous music director S.A. Arun. He started working his first project with S.A. Arun as an assistant music director. His last project with S.A. Arun was Tamilanaga song or also known as Makkal Sakthi. Currently, Tiban ventured into the Malay scene and working with Metrowealth International Group or known as MIG who produced blockbuster movies like Jangan Pandang Belakang, Rempit, Congkak and etc as a music director/ sound engineer. He came out with the latest single, named Tibanin Oru Kathal Kathai and also One Love which impressed most of the people. Viveck (Chakra Sonic), born April 8, 1976, is a successful songwriter and artiste in the Malaysian Music industry . Known as the godfather of Tamil Rap , Viveck has featured with artistes like Reshmonu and Datuk Siti Nurhaliza. He currently owns a record label (DISS THA STUDIO) and music publishing company releasing their own recordings as well as those of other artists. This was his lifetime dream to which had finally come true after hurdles. Having performed in the local TV, Astro and interviewed in the Discovery Channel and BBC London, his songs were even nominated for Anugerah Industri Musik for the song Ulek Mayang and a song which is nominated yearly representing the Indian Music Diaspora in Anugerah Era for the song Sang Puteri. Since the age of 15, Vivek has an apt for poetry writing inspired by the diversities of Malaysian culture, and Hindu scriptures. The group consists of Yogeswaran Veerasingam a.k.a Yogi B, Chandrakumar Balakrishnan a.k.a Land Slyde, Nicholas Ong a.k.a Point Blanc and Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan a.k.a C.Loco. Most of their songs are in English but they have also released tracks in Bahasa Melayu, Tamil, and Cantonese. Height and Achievements Their first album entitled Its a nice day to be alive beat the highest sales in the Malaysian hip-hop chart at that time. This was followed by their second album entitled The World is Yours. Their third album was entitled Return of Tha Boombox.
