In this issue!
Note from Gov ............ 1 KCKC............................. 2 Dues .............................. 2 Major Emphasis ........... 2 Strategic Plan .............. 3 Kiwanis DCON ............. 4

Summer has finally come to an end, and I know we are all sad about it. Personally, I had a long three month summer, and I was kind of ready to go back to school. That is, until the end of the first day when I realized why I liked summer so much. I know many of you have been meeting during the summer (and many havent), but regardless what stage you are in, now is the time to become re-motivated and start meeting with your officers and members. The beginning of school is one of the most crucial times during the year. Many clubs lost a lot of seniors, so it is imperative that you get out there and recruit! Hold a membership drive, invite non-members to service projects and show them how awesome Key Club is! Many clubs are in their planning phases for the year and are looking for service projects to do. Some of the overachievers out there already have the next THREE years planned out, but I digress. I have a personal request for each and every one of you. I would like to see every club in the Florida District participate in two projects at least once this year, The Mentoring and Modeling Program and The ELIMINATE Project. These two projects are very close to me, and I am extremely passionate about them. The Florida District Board has created an M&M Program Guide and an ELIMINATE Project Fundraising Guide for all of you. Both of these documents can be found on our District Website, www.FloridaKeyClub.com. If you have any questions about either project, or any general questions, please let me know! My email is GovernorDoug@FloridaKeyClub.com, and my phone number is 850-896-9359 (I text!). Thank you,

Governor Doug Ream

Key Club Kick Off Conference, Dues and Major Emphasis

Key Club Kick-Off Conference:
Hopefully, your Lt. Governor has informed you about your Zones KCKC. If not shame on them, and just to be safe, I am going to talk about it a little bit. KCKC is a zone wide training conference dedicated to training officers and learning about different service projects. Here are the dates of the Key Club Kick-off Conferences throughout the District: Division 1A/1B: October 15th Division 2A/2B: October 8th Zone B: September 24th Zone C: September 24th Zone D: September 17th Zone E: September 10th Zone F: September 24th Zone G: September 24th Zone H: October 8th Zone I: September 24th Zone J: September 24th Zone K: September 24th Division 25B: October 1st
(Note: I will be attending the Zones that are bolded.)

Dues:
I will not spend much time talking about this, because I know Treasurer Eric has said plenty to your Lt. Governor and your Treasurer. However, I would like to talk about the Presidents role in the dues process. The President must set a deadline that states when dues are due. My suggestion is that the deadline should be October 1st (DO NOT SEND DUES TO KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL BEFORE OCTOBER 1st!) I would like to see every club receive early bird dues (postmark by Nov. 1)! If you do not have the greatest Treasurer, the responsibility falls to you to make sure membership information is completed in the Membership Update Center, as well as making sure that the invoice is given to the appropriate people. If you have any other questions, please direct them to our District Treasurer Eric Riser at Treasurer@FloridaKeyClub.com

Major Emphasis (formerly known as MEP):

Very recently the International Board changed the definition and meaning of the Major Emphasis Program. They renamed it to simply the Major Emphasis. The new definition of the Major Emphasis is that a club must be working with children for the project to be considered under the Major Emphasis. Once of the reasons that they changed it to Major Emphasis is because the International Board felt that MEP was not broad enough, and that many awesome projects did not qualify because of one reason or another. This falls right into place with my Governors Project, the Mentoring and Modeling Program. The M&M Program, which is dedicated to teaching a child some sort of lesson, falls under the Major Emphasis, meaning that any clubs who participate in M&M are also participating in the Major Emphasis.

A Plan Worth Having, A Strategic One

A good start to a new school year is to have a good plan. This plan should include many aspects, such as recruiting, dues, service projects, fundraising and important events. I will provide suggestions for each month of the year in this article. You do not have to follow these suggestions, but having been a club president and Lt. Governor, I believe they are good practices to follow. I will start in September and will end in May: September: Have major recruiting drives and take in as many members as possible. You should hold your first meeting and start having your Treasurer collect dues. A Service Project, even a small one, should be done by the end of the month. Attend Key Club Kick-off Conference. Begin to fundraise for District Convention. October: Finish collecting dues and update the Membership Update Center. Give the invoice to your Advisor so money can be sent in. Participate in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF or any other ELIMINATE Project Fundraiser. Attend Key Club Kick-off Conference. November: Plan for a larger project in this month. There arent many notable events, so it is a perfect time to do a huge project. December: Do a Mentoring and Modeling Program with children around the holidays. Perfect time to give gifts to children with unfortunate circumstances, or to visit senior citizens in a retirement home. January: Continue to fundraise for District Convention. Dont forget to do some sort of Service Project as well. Attend Spring Zone Rallies. Begin talking about club officer and director positions. February: Begin accepting nominations for new officers and directors. Continue to Fundraise for District Convention. Plan to do something with the ELIMINATE Project. Attend Spring Zone Rallies. Begin filling out Awards Packet. March: Governors Project Month. Participate in the M&M Program. This includes any project that teaching children a lesson. Hold elections for new club officers and directors. Attend Spring Zone Rallies. April: Prepare the new officers and directors for their positions. Do a grand finale service project to end the year on a high note. Turn in Awards Packet. May: Attend District Convention. Have fun! I hope this helpful to you. If you dont know what you are going to do for a month, please dont hesitate to ask me for help! I am always willing to help my awesome Club Presidents!

The Facts:
Key Club International has reached 260,000 members. Key Club is the largest student-led High School organization in the world. The Florida District is second largest in active charters, new clubs, and membership in all of International. The Florida District currently has over 17,700 members Last year, the Florida District served for our 300,000 hours and raised $25,000 for the ELIMINATE Project. Since Convention, we have a little over 30,000 service hours, which is extremely good for the summer! The Florida District is at 98% dues paid on active clubs for the 2010-2011 year. However, this changes on October 1 st, and I know we can reach 100%!

Kiwanis District Convention

This past weekend, members of the Florida District Board attended the 94th Florida Kiwanis District Convention in Marco Island. They had a splendid time at a 4-star resort on the Gulf. They interacted with many Kiwanians from around the State, and they represented us extremely well. They attended the last 2010-2011 Kiwanis District Board meeting, the last 2010-2011 Florida Kiwanis Foundation Board meeting, and the first 2011-2012 Kiwanis District Board meeting. They all attended many Service Leadership Program workshops, teaching Kiwanians how they should interact with Teens, work with Key Club and CKI, and many other helpful things. I also had the opportunity to attend several of their functions and assemblies. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to the Kiwanis Governor, Tom Ramiccio; Kiwanis Governor-Elect, Eddie Lee; and Treasurer Allen Whetsell. These leaders are some of the most passionate, hard-working and Key Club dedicated people I have met. They are always thinking about Key Club and the other Service Leadership Programs, and for this I am extremely thankful for their service. Melanie Winternheimer, the wife of one our Zone Administrators, Tom Winternheimer, was elected Treasurer!
