This is the first issue of The NEW&BAD, a new art magazine offering its readers reviews, essays,
manifestos, conversations with artists, translations, documents, letters, and images.
The NEW&BAD art magazine focuses on the visual arts, and joins Maayan and Maarvon New Film
Magazine, as the third publication to come out of Maayan Magazine. Two years ago, Maayan opened
a non-profit art space named The New&Bad Contemporary Art in downtown Tel Aviv (Initiated by
Maayan Strauss, Nimrod Kamer, Alon Kastiel, Roy Arad and Joshua Simon). The space operated for
six months, displaying eight solo exhibitions (by Nimrod Kamer, Noa Tsaushu, Efrat Kedem, Oren Ben
Moreh, Know Hope, Inbal Strauss, Eden Bannet, Eran Nave and Fumio Sakurai). The space and the
magazines name derive from a quote by Bertold Brecht, explaining that he prefers new and bad art over
the good old art.
Paradoxically, the commercial art initiatives, such as the art fairs and large-scale events, proved that
more and more people relate to contemporary art in Israel. With the closing of Studio Art Magazine, we
present a new art magazine. There may be need for another Studio, but The NEW&BAD is obviously
not it. In its values and style The NEW&BAD is far from the chromo atmosphere of contemporary art
magazines and from any indebtedness to art history. In many ways, it is closer to Alexia, the art & sex
magazine artist Keren Cytter published earlier in the decade in Tel Aviv, and Archisex - architecture
magazine published by Rinat Berkowitz at the same time both bordering fanzines.
When art insists on being more and more communicative, it seems that the writing on art should find
its place once again its role as mediator alters, from transcribing representations to substantiate
possibilities. When the terror of the new replaces the comfort of the old, there is place for a publication
that would allow us to think of ourselves not only as professional creators or audiences, but as rticipants.
