: Matter in nature Learning Area : Matter and substance Learning objective : Applying the idea proton number and nucleon number in atoms of element. Learning outcomes: i) ii) iii) iv) State what is proton number. State what is nucleon number. State what is isotope. Relate the number of proton, neutron and electron in an atom to its proton number and nucleon number.
Prior knowledge : Student have learnt about the structure of an atom. Lesson outcomes : At the end of this lesson, student should be able a) Content knowledge. - To define the proton and nucleon number after discussing it with their friends correctly. - To state the meaning of isotope by using their own word correctly. - To differentiate the proton, neutron, electron and nucleon number in a table provided by teacher correctly. b) Science process skill (SPS)/ Thinking Skill Thinking Strategy (PSTS)/Manipulated skill (MS) - To draw model of an atom with the arrangement of sub atom using the material provided by the teacher correctly. - To relate the number of proton, neutron and electron in an atom to its proton number and nucleon number by using the formulae given correctly. - To calculate the number of proton, neutron and electron by using the calculator through discussion with their friend correctly.
c) Science attitude and Noble value - To respect each other during the discussion session. - To listen to their friends view openly during the lesson. - To realizing the important of element in our life. Teaching and learning resources : Apparatus Power point and video presentation Worksheet/Activity Manila card(15x15cm) Amount 1 2 10x5group
Teaching steps : Phase / Time Content A picture of a universe : Analogy of an atom with nucleus (sun) and electron around (planet). Picture 1(universe) see appendix 1 How to relate the 3D structure of an atom. Teaching and learning activity Teacher display a picture of universe Student discuss with their friend and tell what they see : Example : - Sun - Planets - Orbit Teacher relates the answer of student to the structure of an atom. Example : - Sun = nucleus - Planets = electron - Orbits = shells Remarks Teaching resources Picture 1 SPS Observation Communication Prediction Science attitude/noble value Respectful Cooperation
Introduction to atom: Atom consists of three sub atoms which are proton, electron and neutron. Proton number (atomic number)
Teaching aid Student need to choose one of Power point and element in the video periodic table (1-10 presentation element only) and Manila card draw it structure Marker pen
The number of proton found in nucleus of an atom. Represented by symbol (Z) in periodic table. Atomic number equal to the number of electron. Nucleon number (mass number) Total number of proton and neutron in atomic nucleus. Represented by symbol (A). Mass number differ for each different isotope. The difference between the mass number and atomic number gives the number of neutron (N). Formulae : N = A - Z Isotope Atom that contain the same number of proton but have different number of neutron which differ from atom to atom without changing the designation of the atom as a particular element. Electron configuration. Number of electron in their shell and number of shell. Isotopes of each element have different number of neutron. Atom can be arranged according to the proton number.
based on what they understand. Student need to predict and label the nucleon and electron (spatial intelligent). Students are divided into 5 groups. Student are given some card of element, they need to arrange them according to the atomic number correctly. Each group must come out with one lyric on how to remember the first 10 element in periodic table (Linguistic intelligent). Each group need to identify the proton, electron and neutron number of each element that they get and table it (Table 1). Teacher give lecture about the topic through the power point and video presentation and student give an attention. Student need to solve some calculation about atomic and mass number in worksheets 1.1 (logical mathematics

Applying the concept of proton, neutron and electron in the problem given.
Student will divide into 5 groups. Each group will be given a question relating to the topic ( see worksheet 1.2) Each group will presenting their answer in front of the classroom.

Worksheet 1.2 (application) Group work: Iron and its allied product, steel are important in the development of many countries. Iron ore the raw material for the manufacture of iron is found as mineral deposit in some countries of the world. Iron is the chemical element with symbol Fe and atomic number is 26. The element of iron rust when its react with oxygen of the air with the presence of water to form a brown substance. The rusting is due to the oxidation process. Oxidation is define when an element loss it electron. From the situation above discuss with your group member about the atom of iron. Sample answer: i. ii. iii. iv. Electrons are moving. Electrons can escape from their orbital. The number of electron can be change either increasing or decreasing. Proton number of element are fixed.
