ABB suppIied the integrated power, automation and controI
systems for the Snøhvit LNG pIant and offshore faciIities. The
company is currentIy working on another comprehensive pro-
gram for GoIiat, the second fieId deveIopment in the Barents
Sea, 85 (53 mi) km northwest of Hammerfest. This wiII produce
oiI and gas through a Sevan 1000 circuIar FPSO in 400 m
(1,312 ft) water depth, due to start operations in 2013.
ABB is providing a comprehensive range of eIectricaI, auto-
mation, instrumentation and teIecommunications equipment
and systems. The package incIudes inteIIigent operations, with
remote diagnostics avaiIabIe from the offshore process pIant
Iive to ABB speciaIists worIdwide, aIIowing them to diagnose
and fix probIems that may arise. "This is a huge benefit to
customers," said Per Erik HoIsten, who heads up the compa-
ny's Process Automation division in Norway. "It changes their
whoIe operating phiIosophy on offshore instaIIations.
"At GoIiat, we wiII aIso have an onshore controI room. In
an extreme situation, the team there couId sit onshore and
supervise the entire operation. In addition, we wiII provide an
onshore controI room to Eni's office in Hammerfest, giving
them access to the same data as is avaiIabIe on the pIatform."
Another highIight of ABB's contract is the worId's Iongest
and highest-output AC power cabIe (123 kV/75MW) to an
offshore instaIIation, running 106 km (66 mi) from an onshore
substation near Hammerfest to the pIatform, with integrated fi-
ber optics for communications purposes. The remainder of the
FPSO's 100 MW power requirements wiII come from onboard
gas turbines - these and the combined AC eIectrification sys-
tem wiII heIp reduce GoIiat's CO

emissions by 50% compared
with a conventionaI power suppIy arrangement, thereby Iower-
ing the partners' Norwegian CO
