Background The learner is in grade12 and its his last day of school His behaviour is typical of a young man that cant control his emotions. The whole scene is about how happy the boy is that he is done and what he does. The speaker is disappointed with the way the student conducts himself and wonders if high school meant anything to him. Thumela is a Xhosa word meaning to send away.

Explanation: The word gemaak creates a connection between the teacher and the learners feelings. It shows us that throughout the poem they dont show their real emotions. All the plurals in the poem show what the student went through in his life at school. The assonance of the letter a bind the whole poem together. The pages of the history book are personified with the word verward
