POPULATION GROWTH AND POPULATION EXPLOSION

Population growth
Population growth is the change in a population over time.

Term POPULATION GROWTH RATE and is often used to refer growth of the human population of the world.

Population growth rate

Population growth is determined by four factors, births(B), deaths(D), immigrants(I), and emigrants(E).

P(B-D)+(I-E)

Population pyramids

Population Explosion

The unpredicted growth of human population in an alarming rate is called population explosion.

Indian scenario in Population explosion

Second most populous country. Population growth rate (1.4 > 0.5) Fertility rate (2.8 > 1.7)

FACTS

India will be a world champion in Population by 2040. In just 35 years after Independence we just added another India in population. In May,2000 we became 1 billion and we can say every sixth person in this world is an Indian.

Effect of Population explosion

Deforestation Land and soil degradation Environmental pollution Air pollution Water pollution Vehicular pollution

Deforestation

The total forest area diverted for non forestry purpose is 4.5 million hectares between 19501980.(45,000 sq km) Only 20% of our land area is covered by forest.

Land and soil degradation

Soil erosion, land salination and loss of nutrients. 328.7 million hectare *175 million hectare land degraded *141 million hectare to soil erosion *8.6 million hectare to water logging

Water pollution

Marine organisms get affected. Drinking water gets contaminated and will deplete.

Air pollution

Vehicles are important cause 2 millionpremature death 30 millionasthma

They release green house gases,as a result causes global warming.

Control measures

Aim for population stabilization through 1.family welfare programmes 2.family planning 3.one child policy 4.women education 5.increasing effective age for marriage

Biological Ways to Deal with the Explosion

1. Increase Immigration from crowded areas to low population areas 2. Increase our Technologies to deal with the problem 3. Decrease Reproduction Rate 4. Increase Mortality

Birth Rates Decline with

Increased levels of education Increased economic opportunities Increased female empowerment Accelerated cultural change Increased availability of birth control methods
