Section I Write Answers to all questions (4*10=40) 1.) Heat is transferred isothermally from a source to the working fluid of a Carnot engine. The entropy Change of the working fluid, the entropy change of the source, and the total entropy change during this Process are to be determined. (2+2+2= 6 Marks)

b) Show that the entropy change in a process when a perfect gas changes from state 1 to state 2 is given by

3. Calculate the thermal efficiency and compression ratio for an automobile working on otto cycle. If the energy generated per cycle is thrice that of rejected during the exhaust. Consider Working fluid as an ideal gas with = 1.4 . (4 Marks) b) A diesel engine operating on Air Standard Diesel cycle operates on 1 kg of air with an initial Pressure of 98kPa and a temperature of 36C. The pressure at the end of compression is 35 bar and cut off is 6% of the stroke. Determine Thermal efficiency of engine. (6 Marks)

4. a)Derive Thermal efficiency of the ideal Brayton cycle as a function


of the pressure ratio. (4 Marks) b) A hot air engine works on Stirling cycle. The temperature and pressure limits are 27C and 377C and 2 kgf/cm2 and 20kg/cm2.Determine the thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure of cycle. (6 Marks) Note: Draw P-V and T-S charts for Questions 3 and 4.
