Crayon Melting Art

Child: Aneece Date: August 2013 Written by: Teacher Eunjoo Kia Ora/ As salamu alaykum Aneece and whnau, As the childrens interest in art has been growing I held a special art session with the children. While the children were sitting around the table I put a canvas on which I had already glued some crayons, a hot glue gun, other crayons and a hair drier. I asked the children what we could do with them. They had no idea so I suggested them to find out through watching a video. While watching it they were sat nice and quietly. When the crayon was melting down due to the heat the children said Wow. After the video clip I asked the children if they wanted to try the crayon melting art. All of them said Yes excitedly. I reminded them to be careful because we were using a hot glue gun and a hair

dryer it would obviously be hot. I also told the children that they could only join in the making process if they were sitting nicely. I noticed that Aneece, you showed me great concertration while watching the video clip. Your eyes were wide open and your facial expression told me that you could not wait to try it. You helped me to stick a crayon to the canvas by using a hot glue gun and seemed so happy to use the gun. When the crayons were glued on the canvas, the children named the colour and some children said Rainbow. We also counted how many colours were on the canvas. Later, you joined in again by melting the crayons with a blow dryer. Aneece, you were bravely holding the dryer and worked hard to direct heat at a section of crayons. When the crayons melted and the wax dripped down Aneece, you seemed so excited at the the beautiful art you had created. Ka pai! Whats happening here? Aneece, I am so pleased that you contributed to the session actively and showed us that you were interested in art and capable of contributing to the process of making melted crayon art. The session was long but you showed your persistence, patience and

concentration. You were capable of following directions as well. I was so impressed by that. This is aligned with Te Whriki, which suggests the importance of an environment where children are affirmed as individuals. Aneece, this will develop skill for such awareness of your own special strength, and confidence. Whats next for Aneeces learning step? Our teachers will continue to provide opportunities for Aneece to explore your strengths and interests by showing sensitive interventions and encouragement. Child/Parents/Whnau Voice
