Plurals
Skills Review When there are two or more of an item or thing, it is called a plural. An s is added to words ending in a consonant (e.g., two hats, three pigs, five pens).  The sound of the plural s changes from /s/ if the ending consonant is voiceless (e.g., hats) to /z/ if it is voiced (e.g., pens).  If a word ends in ss, zz, or x, the es plural must be added. The sound for es is /iz/ (e.g., dresses, buzzes, boxes). Plural forms of nouns that end in y will be addressed later.
