Lesson – 6
THE MANGO TREE
Summary:
This unit is about the national fruit of India—The mango. It starts at a garden where mangoes
have ripened during summer season. The chowkidar is a guard who protects the ripe fruits
from naughty boys, birds and monkeys. Parrots, blue jays, green coppersmiths, owls and
monkeys depend on mango trees for their shelter. Mango is a tasty fruit which is called the
‘king of fruits’ because it comes from the majestic mango trees. We eat raw mangoes and the
ripe ones. We also make pickles, chutneys, jams and aam papads out of mangoes.
Sometimes we drink mango juice with milk or powder the mango seeds to make flour for rotis.
Mango trees are very common in India. They are tall, grand and old. There are places in India
which get their names from mango trees. Hazaribagh is such a place where there was a huge
‘bagh’ or garden and where there were once ‘hazar’ or a thousand trees. A village came to
grow around the trees in the huge mango grove. That was how Hazaribagh was formed. Later
the village became a town. The unit describes a common sight in Indian gardens during the
summer season. The readers get to learn more about mangoes and the sights and sounds
associated with the national fruit. It is a very rural view, but gives a beautiful picture to the
