Father seems very unpredictable about his surprise for mother’s

The encircled word is a word with an affix which infers meaning


of the idiomatic expression “loose cannon”. So, in today’s lesson
you are going to learn how to infer the meaning of idiomatic
expression using affixes.

Let’s try to identify the meaning of the word unpredictable. We


have learned that the affix un- means not. So, by adding it to the
word predictable negates the meaning making the word
unpredictable. It has the meaning not predictable this word is now
the clue word for the idiom that was use in the sentence a loose
cannon. This means “actions that hard to predict’’ or “Actions that
cannot be easily identified.”

 Did the affix help you to understand the meaning of “loose

Read the following sentences with idiomatic expressions. Identify

Therefore the meaning of the idiomatic expression “a fact of life”


is unlikely to happen yet accepted because it can’t be changed
which is the same thought of the word with affix “unpleasant”
