Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests.
Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

Sampaguita and Rose

There are two different flowers planted in front of Aling

Diding’s ; they are Sampaguita and Rose.Aling Diding


takes care of the plants very well. Aling Diding spends most of

her time in the garden.


One day, both flowers began to bloom. Rose has red
flowers while Sampaguita has white. Both are very lovely.
Every time people passed by, they stop and look at the
flowers. Rose’s flowers catch peoples’ attention because of

its . She is very happy because everybody says she is


beautiful. On the contrary, her heart is filled with hatred and
arrogance. She teases Sampaguita for not having good
scent and catchy color. Sampaguita never argue with Rose.
She remains calm and true to herself. She believes that each
flower is unique.

Days passed; a came. Heavy poured the


whole day and night. When the flowers woke up, Rose was
shocked that her petals had fallen. She cried and was so sad.

Sampaguita noticed what happened. She comforted
Rose and told her not to worry because soon it will have a
beautiful and attractive flower again. From then on they
became friends.

Presenting Information in Varied Artistic Ways


Pictures and symbols add color to selections like story. It
encourages the imagination of the reader which can make the
selection more interesting. Also, through pictures and symbol,
additional information may also
be presented in a simpler way
which the reader can understand.
This kind of representation
called “photo presentation” is
very observable in weather
forecast, community signages
and stories for children.
