Objective:
At the end of the lesson the learners should be able to:

• Use plural form of regular


nouns by adding /s/ or /es/
(e.g., dog, dogs; wish, wishes)

plural form

noun?
• Singular nouns
refer to one
person, animal,
place, thing or
event.
• Plural nouns refer to
two or more persons,
animals, places, things
or events. Plural words
are formed by adding –
s or -es at the end of
the words as well as
words ending with -x, -
z, -ch and –sh.

• Plural Nouns Ending with O
If -o is followed by a
consonant letter we add -es to
have the plural form. If -o is
followed by a vowel letter we add
–s to get the plural form of the
word.

• Note:
Expo, piano and bolo are
exceptions to the rule. The
plural of these words is
formed by just adding –s as
pianos, bolos, expos.
• Plural Nouns ending with –fe
or -f
1. Nouns that end with –f or -fe
form, we change –f or –fe into
v then add –es.
• Plural Nouns ending with –fe or -f

life

• Plural Nouns ending with –fe or -f

leafv + es
leaves
2. If –f or –fe is followed by two
vowel letters we add –s to
make it plural.

Examples :
roof - roofs
chief – chiefs
• Note:
Leaf – leaves
thief – thieves
These are exception
to the rule.
• 3. Some words ending in -ff
form we add –s to make it
plural.

Examples:
cliff - cliffs
scuff - scuffs
• Plural Nouns Ending with -y

If -y followed by a consonant
letter, add –es to get the plural
form. If -y is followed by a vowel
letter, add –s to determine the
plural form.
• Examples :

days

toy + s
toys
