Dear Parents, One more day until October! Our first full month was a successful one! Each day was filled with tons of learning and tons of fun! Additional learning can be found on the Wikinest. If you havent been there yet, I strongly encourage you to check it out. Youll find the following sites there which include games for spelling and math practice. Please keep in mind that games alone will not improve learning. However, conversations about the skills used during gaming will indeed deepen learning. 1. Spelling City: www.spellingcity.com 2. Arcademic Skill Builders (Multiplayer Math Games): http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/ Finally, you no doubt have started to see some summative assessments come home. Although I assess individual learning every day, these assessments show understanding at the end of a unit of study. Like many districts in the area, we do not use the traditional A, B, C, D, F system (until high school). Instead we use the states developed system for grading: A (90-99) Advanced, P (70-89) Proficient, B (60-69) Basic, and BB (59 or less) Below Basic. As always, grades are communication tools that assist both parents and teachers in the next step for their students. You will always get a hardcopy of the assessment sent home, but you can easily check your students grades by signing up for a parent portal account at tinyurl.com/berardigrades13 Language Arts: Our story this week explores the desert and focuses on main idea and detail. Math: We are ready to start our addition chapter as we add with and without regrouping (3 digit numbers: 326 + 859). Writing: This week will begin to differentiate between questions and statements. Students are also writing their second narrative piece. It will focus on a time they discovered something in nature. Science: We just began focusing on homes for living things. Well start by focusing on environments, habitats, and how humans impact other living things. From, Ryan P. Berardi, M.Ed.
