THE CONJURING

Is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan.

INTRODUCTION
The Conjuring opening fades in showing a picture of a family with a name with the picture this signifies that something has happened. Throughout the opening everything is black and white making it feel eerie in atmosphere. Having the opening feel eerie tells the audience that it is a horror film. Also having pictures of different families dissolve in and out gives it a sense of the passing of time.

CAMERAWORK
The shots are all close up camera shots of articles about superstitious things. This suggests that the film might be about ghosts.

EDITING
The shots are edited together by cross dissolving different scenes. This creates a sense of time passing by. The articles are create using different layers of acetate. Then they ate flipped this give it the feel that a story is building up.

SOUND
The music sounds like people talking in a ghostly way which is very sinister. It is a very simple piece of slow pasted music but it is very affective for the film. It gives a sense that there are spirits and ghosts around. Which gives the opening an eerie feel to it.

MISE-N-SCENE
There are black and white articles of different things that have happened.

This suggests that the things that have been happening have happened over a period of time. The titles are merged together with the article to make it look like

they are part of it.

REPRESENTATION
The dissolving between different scenes represents the feeling of time passing by as the scenes go from one thing to the next. The black and white images makes them look ghostly in appearance which foreshadows what will happen in the film.

WHAT MIGHT I USE?

The ghostly look of the opening The titles imbedded into the shots The eerie music

I think that these things make a good horror film opening sequence because it
give a sense that there are ghosts around from the eerie music that is being played and from the stylizing of the images. Being in black and white makes it seem old and time has pasted. Having the titles imbedded into the articles makes it seem that

those people are to do with something making more scary.
