Mole Quantities Lab

U n i t 2 T h e M o l e C o n c e p t

Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems

PROBLEMS:

1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. 1) Fill a teaspoon with aluminum powder 2) Weigh the beaker on the digital scale 3) Pour the one level teaspoon of aluminum powder into the beaker and weigh it on the digital scale 4) Subtract the weight of the beaker by the weight of the beaker with aluminum to find out the how much the aluminum powder weighs.

B. Beaker: 34.35 g Beaker with aluminum: 39.62 g

C. One teaspoon of aluminum foil: 39.62g - 34.35g= 5.27 g Number of atoms present in the aluminum foil: (5.27g / 26.98g) x 6.02x 1023 atoms= 1.18 x 1023 (atoms) Concluding Statement: The number of atoms present in the aluminum foil is 1.18 x 1023 (atoms).

2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron

A. Since 1.00 mole of iron weighs 58.5 g, so basically the question is asking us how many level teaspoons of iron powder will sum up to equal 58.5g.

To do that, (1) Fill the teaspoon with iron powder (2) Weigh the paper on the digital scale (3) Pour the iron powder on the paper and weigh it on the digital scale

D. Iron and paper: 12.42 g Paper: 1.1 g

C. Mass of iron: 12.42 g-1.1 g= 11.32 g Level teaspoons of iron powder needed to find 1.00 mol of iron: 58.5 g / 11.32 g= 5.17 (level teaspoons of iron powder)

Concluding Statement: 5.17 level teaspoons of iron powder are needed to find 1 mol of iron.
