We can usually point at something with the name of a common noun if we can see it, of course! A common noun does not usually begin with a capital letter unless, of course, it is the first word in a sentence. %!at i a proper noun& A proper noun is a noun that names a particular person, place or thing, e.g. (avid, )dinburgh. *tlantic +cean, %ednesday. $a k 1 In the following story, circle the common noun and underline the proper noun . Ignore any other nouns (for the moment). $!e $erri,le $ale o# Pirate Pete irate ete was born in !over. "e became a pirate when he was only a thirteen#year#old lad. "e sailed on many ships his most famous ship was the $evenge. "e fought in many battles. "e had many adventures. "e loved the life. %nfortunately he was not always luc&y. irate ete had his left leg blown off by a canon ball during a battle off the coast of 'alta in the 'editerranean (ea, so he was sometimes called eg#)eg ete. ete had his right hand chopped off during a sword fight at a pub called the (ailor*s Arms in +ol&estone. ,hat is why he has a hoo& for a hand. -f course you will be wondering why irate ete wears an eye#patch over his left eye. !id he lose his eye in a sea#battle or a sword#fight. /o, he did not. -ne day ete got a terrible itch in his left eye. +or a moment he forgot about his hoo& and tried to scratch the itch with his fingers. ,his was not a good idea! $a k 2 Write a short story (no more than two paragraphs) about anything you want but it must include A, )0A(, 1 common nouns and 2 proper nouns. 3ou may want to add ad4ectives (a word that would add detail to a noun) in your writing which is fine.
