Covington-Newberry Historical Society

To Welcome Doug Christian to Meeting
The Covington-Newberry Historical Society will meet Monday,
Feb. 10, 7 p.m., at the Covington Government Center, 1 S. High St.,

Doug Christian will give a very interesting presentation on The
Forgotten Communities of Miami County. His program should bring
back memories for some attending, and for others, provide an opportunity to learn more about the community.

CHS Schedules PSEOP Meeting February 13

Covington High School will conduct a mandatory meeting on PostSecondary Education Option for the 2014-2015 school year on Thursday, Feb. 13. Students in all four grade levels of high school for the
2014-2015 year could potentially participate.
Parents of interested/qualifying students (at least a 2.5 GPA)
should attend to hear procedure requirements and to collect important
information. Parent attendance to this meeting is required for student
participation in the program. Students should attend the meeting, as
well, especially if they will be new to the program.
The meeting will be held in the library at 6 p.m.

There will be a Sports Card & Collectible Show held at the
Miami Valley Centre Mall, I-75 and St. Rt. 36 Exit 82, Piqua,

There will be FREE AUTOGRAPHS from Ohio State players

New DAtes for the Gathering

the 2014 Board of Directors of
the Fort Rowdy Gathering has
announced this celebration will
be moved to Labor Day weekend. This will allow the public
to enjoy the festival in warmer
weather. Activities will begin
Saturday morning with a parade
through downtown Covington,
followed by a weekend full of
fun, food, and concerts.
The Mountain Man encampment area will be enlarged, allowing for more campers, period
vendors, and activities. There
will be many activities held in
Covington Park. As always, the
concerts will be free. Local
churches and civic organizations
will have delicious food conces-

sions. Crafters, childrens activities, and contests help round out

a great weekend. The festival is

Author Larry Hamilton To Join Friends Meeting as Guest Speaker at M-U Library
The New Friends of the Milton-Union Public Library will host Larry Hamilton, noted author and
speaker, to their regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m., at the library. Hamilton is a native of
Loveland, Ohio, and a retired Piqua teacher of African American History, World Studies, and Current
Events. He will be giving a presentation on African American Life in the Upper Miami Valley.
As a founding member of the African American Genealogy
Group of the Miami Valley (AAGGMV), Larry has authored
an article on Helping African Ancestored Americans Find
Their Roots and is a presenter on family history and genealogy.

Cuts for Kenya Fundraiser

Planned at Above & Beyond Salon

On Sunday, Feb. 23, from 1-4 p.m., Above & Beyond Salon in Covington will be holding a fundraiser to raise money for one of their hair stylists, Fran Shouvlin, to go to Kenya, Africa, in June.
They will be offering a $15 hair cut and shampoo, with 100% of the proceeds going to Frans trip and the
work she will do while she is there.
Fran will be traveling to Webuye, Kenya, to work with the New Beginnings Ministry Center where they
train pastors to preach, plant churches, house orphans, teach single mothers to sew, hold Bible studies, and
offer training to lay church leaders.
The center was established in 2005 and has been an ongoing outreach that is transforming many lives
in the community. Fran will be traveling with a team of 10 members from around the United States from
June 20 -29.
While in Kenya, Fran will be using her talent and love for cutting and styling hair to give free haircuts
to orphans and widows in and around the village.

Holiday Sharing Event Held

At Power Over Parkinsons Group
Versailles Health Care Center hosted its end-of-the-year Holiday Sharing Event at the December Power
Over Parkinsons meeting. The group members brought in their favorite holiday treats to share with everyone. While enjoying refreshments and snacks, the group watched an inspiring NEW video featuring the
Parkinsons LSVT BIG & LOUD Program Successes for 2013. Each member received a copy of the video
to share with family and friends.
Several members also shared their story of empowerment over Parkinsons with the group. Mr. Keith
Furlong of Arcanum shared his story. He was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease on July 30, 2013. Furlongs neurologist, Dr. Louis Krousgrill, referred him to Versailles Health Care Center for Parkinsons therapy treatment. He completed the Parkinsons specialty programs, including LSVT BIG and LOUD
treatments. Furlong said, I think I can speak for all of us here when I say thank you to everyone at Versailles
Health Care Center. When I first started here, I was pessimistic and didnt care about much anymore. Now
I have my life back. Thank you!
The treatment programs that Mr. Furlong and many others have completed are unique certified treatment
protocols that are considered the gold standard in treating disorders in people with Parkinsons Disease.
Each LSVT BIG and LOUD program is individualized for the patients specific needs. The LSVT BIG
program addresses safe walking, balance, and trunk rotation. The LSVT LOUD program addresses soft,
mumbled, monotone, and hoarse vocal quality. Since implementing the Parkinsons treatment in 2011 at
Versailles Health Care Center, over 100 patients have successfully completed the 16-session program.
After several other group members shared their stories of empowerment over Parkinsons, Versailles
Health Care Center BIG and LOUD therapists, including Speech Therapists Shannon Condon and Heidi
Luebke, Physical Therapists Gina Boerger and Stephen Winner, and Physical Therapist Assistant Jennifer
Everman, shared their favorite memories of the year. I enjoy seeing my patients get their life back through
the functional improvements gained with this program, expressed Dr. Stephen Winner, DPT.
Congratulations to Verdin Stucke of Greenville. He was the winner of the door prize giveaway, good
for a free entre, compliments of Michael Anthonys at the Inn.
The next Power Over Parkinsons group will take place on Wednesday, February 12, 4 p.m., at The
Rehab Clinic at Versailles Health Care Center. It is a FREE event, open to people with Parkinsons Disease
and their families. The topic will be Home Exercise Programs and Goal Setting.

VHCC Delivers Goodie Bags to Homeward Bound Patients

Versailles Health Care Center,
a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center that offers shortterm rehab services, outpatient
therapy, and long-term care, is
proud to have returned home 153
patients so far in 2013 through its
Homeward Bound Therapy Program. In honor of these patients
who utilized Versailles Health
Care Centers short-term rehab
services and returned home,
VHCC staff and current patients
assembled goodie bags filled
with assorted fresh fruit, nuts, and
candies before Thanksgiving.
The staff then made delivery of
the goodie bags the week of
Thanksgiving to all the patients
sent home so far in 2013. Versailles Health Care Center would

who worked so hard to make

From time to time questions arise as to what types of ads or news articles can be published free of charge.
The Stillwater Valley Advertiser, although everyone refers to it as a newspaper, is in reality what its name
suggests an advertiser. Unfortunately, a necessary part of advertising is the cost. If Arens Corporation did
not charge for the ads we publish, we could not pay for printing/mailing/circulation costs or the salaries of
our employees.
When clubs, schools, churches, or other organizations host dinners, they are in competition with area
restaurants, our loyal advertisers who pay to inform our readers of their products or services. If, however,
an event is held with 100 percent of the profits going to a worthy cause, such as to help a family facing a
health crisis, Arens Corporation, of course, wants to help in any way we can. This type of event would be
published at no charge.
If an organization is holding a bazaar or garage sale and is paying to advertise that event, we would be
happy to also run a small news article for them at no charge.
Many readers question why it takes so long for their article or announcement to be published. The truth
is, we receive a great deal more news than we can ever possibly use. Paid advertisers are given assurance
their ads will run in the week(s) requested. The number of paid ads we receive for a given edition determines
the number of pages for that weeks paper. We make every attempt to publish dated news articles on the
available space remaining on the pages.
