Letter to the Editor

On November 5, I was involved in an accident at 721 and 36 in Bradford. Fortunately, for all parties, injuries were less serious than what they could have been.
To the gentleman I hit, I am truly sorry. To the Medic and crew that came to my aid, I say Thank
You. I want to thank the young man who came to the drivers side and talked to me to keep me calm
until they arrived. I dont know your name, but you know who you are, and it helped a lot.
To the staff at Upper Valley Medical Center Emergency Room, a Thank You, as well. You saw
the need to move me to Miami Valley and I appreciated your honesty and professionalism. To the
Transport Team, Russ Sanderson, and Steve Jackson, thank you for your service to the community.
Steve, thank you for the talk and prayer it made the ride seem to go more quickly.
To Miami Valley Hospital Emergency Staff and Trauma Unit, you were right there when I arrived
and did your jobs so well that you made me unafraid. I cannot tell you all how grateful I am.
To my co-workers, Brenda Selanders and Rick Looker, you know how I feel about you. Thanks
for what you did.
Last of all, but foremost, I want to thank God, because He was with me the whole time.
Because of the wonderful care I received that day and beyond, I will enjoy a Merry Christmas
with my family.
Linda Smith, West Milton

Milton Memories Session Features Firefighters

The next-to-last Milton Memories was held October 3, with the panel made up of West Milton firefighters.
Bill Jay led the discussion. His dad was on the fire department in the 1930's. They had two trucks one city and one rural. They had no pumper,
so were limited to 500 gallons of water. When it was gone there just wasn't any more. The first priority for a barn fire was to remove the livestock.
If a house was ablaze, they began to carry out whatever furniture they could save.
Clarence "Fuzzy" Haney joined in 1962. He mentioned the biggest change he has seen is their safety gear. When he started they had three gas
masks for 29 firemen. Today, each man has his own.
Bob Adams joined in 1973. "Fuzzy" signed his application and mentored him. When he joined there was no fire school. They did in-house
training. The biggest fires on his watch were Mr. Deal's and Valor on Hamilton St.
Denny Frantz joined in 1969, following his graduation. His dad was a member of the force and served as captain for many years. At the
Lowry farmhouse fire the fellows boots got so hot they ran the hose into them to cool their feet. When he joined a new fire truck was $63,000.
Now, an engine can run from $230,000 to $240,000.
Bill Grilliot joined in 1982. His company manufactured and sold fire uniforms around the world. He has admired the Milton Department for
being on the cutting edge of safety. As an example, they changed to bunker pants in 1983 or 1984. New York City did not make this change until
1994.
Tod Lakes joined in 1988. He thanked those who set the groundwork for the present department. He also thanked his family for the sacrifices
they have made over the years so he could be a part of the department. His biggest fires have been Mr. Deal's and Valor.
Ben Herron joined in 1985 and appreciated the strong core of veteran members. He joined with a group of six, and two of them are still
serving. He had always wanted to be a fireman but his eyesight kept him from being able to make it a full-time career. He now feels being a volunteer turned out to be best for him. He enjoys helping people and appreciates the brotherhood.
Also discussed were the Firemen's Conventions, the Pension Fund, building construction of the past, snow removal around hydrants, the
waffle project, their dive team (two boats and 6-7 divers), where they have been called to do search and rescue, and many other topics.
To hear the full recording tune in to Channel 5, purchase a DVD, borrow a DVD from the library, or listen to it on YouTube. For further information call Barb at 687-6559 or Susie at 698-6798.

Covington & Newton FFA Chapters Attend Leadership Night at TVS

On Friday, Nov. 8, the Covington and Newton FFA Chapters traveled
to Twin Valley South High School in West Alexandria for Ohio FFA Leadership Night. Six members attended from Covington and seven members
attended from Newton. The event was led by Ohio FFA officers. Over 50
FFA members were in attendance at the leadership conference, which was
designed to help members find their true potential in life. This activity
was open to all of Ohio FFA and is considered a state level activity.

Notice to our readers

You may notice from time to time that some of the news articles
published seem a bit outdated. A great deal more news than we can
possibly publish is submitted to the Advertiser. As our name implies, we are first and foremost an advertiser. We use the space
remaining after paid advertisements are placed on a page to announce events for schools, churches, libraries, clubs, and organizations, as well as birth, engagement, and wedding announcements,
etc. Dated material is given priority over general news articles.
As is the policy for any newspaper, paid advertising always takes
precedence over free announcements. We trust our readers understand this and will be patient if their article takes some time to make

it onto our pages.

Thank You

In the team part of the event they worked together with given restrictions to create a recipe, product nutritional label, package design,
and address product development issues. Also, both schools competed
in an online test about food science prior to the contest. This was the
first time for each school to compete in this contest and was a great
learning experience for all involved.

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey
South West Flight 606 A Little Rocky
Happy New Year!

Ginger and I went on a five-day cruise with daughter number one

(Kelly) and her family the third week in December. We had a
wonderful time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren,
and the weather was fantastic.
Everything went according to plan until we headed back to Ohio.
The transportation service transferred us from the ship straight to
the airport. The only problem with that was we had a 6:00 p.m.
air flight, and it was only 10:30 a.m. and we now had a seven
and one half hour layover.
As we entered the airport with all 13 bags of luggage, we knew
we had to do something? Kelly and David noticed that there was
a Hilton inside the terminal as we moved in for the long wait.
After a short conference, it was agreed to check to see if they
had a day rate while we waited for our evening flight.
They returned very quickly with smiles gleaming.
Come on dad and mom, we can get a room for $99 and we can
sit by their pool until its time to fly home, Kelly announced.
Thats great, mom and I will split the cost with you, I said with
relief. Im not sure my back would hold out in this terminal.
Lets go! Grandma GG shouted. And all 11 of us made a mad
rush for the elevators.
Ginger was so excited that she shouted that she would buy lunch
for everyone. I nudged her and reminded her we were in a Hilton.
By 3:30 p.m. we were ready to get the kids out of the pool, and
head to our gate. Everything went as smooth as silk. Our fight
was scheduled for a one-hour layover in Nashville, Tennessee.
The ride from Orlando to Nashville was a little rocky, but the
pilot landed the aircraft with pure accuracy.
After our departure, we immediately noticed that just about 100
percent of the flights were on delay status. The Northeast
weather ban was now playing havoc with everyone trying to get
home for Christmas.
Our plane was delayed for almost two hours when the airport
speaker service announced that a tornado was headed for the terminal, and all passengers should now move away from windows
and get into the center of the concourse.
David and I agreed we should probably get as close to restrooms
as possible. If this does hit, help me get everyone into the restrooms as quickly as possible, he whispered.
We stood arm to arm for about 20 minutes, then the loud speakers
announced it was safe to resume waiting while seated.
Thirty minutes later, they announced again that the tornado was
heading for the airport. Once again we headed as close as possible to the restrooms.
Everyone was now getting a little nervous, and it showed as they
made their way to the restrooms to use them.
It seemed like days until they finally announced the storm had
cleared and that all flights would return to normal.
What they failed to announce is that there was still some hearty
storms and most flights would have to travel through them.
Trying to seem like a veteran flyer, I told everyone while making
the exit off the plane that they would have paid money at Kings
Island to ride on flight they just had.
This weeks bottom line: I have to admit; the flight was one of
the rockiest flights Ive ever been on. Even at 68, I was a little
scared. However, our great-grandchildren slept through the entire
ordeal.
