Riverside Police Arrest Man for Battery to Unborn Child

Offender also charged for Domestic Battery
At 7:52 P.M. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, Riverside Police responded to the 200 block of W. Quincy Street for a report of a domestic in progress. Upon arrival, officers found a 35 year old female victim with a swollen left eye, laceration about her face and a swollen lip. She additionally had injuries to her stomach. The investigation discovered that the victims fianc had gone to a friends home to party for the night against her wishes. When he returned home later that night, he found that victim had placed his property outside the home. This led to a verbal altercation between the couple. When the argument escalated, the offender shoved the victim to the ground and climbed on top of her. He then began to shove her face into the hard packed ice and snow causing her injuries. The victim was also kicked her in the stomach. The female victim was treated by paramedics and transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood for her injuries. The victim is four months pregnant. She was later released after medical treatment. Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, The victim was in severe pain when transported to the hospital with abdominal discomfort. While she has been treated and released, the long term condition of her unborn child is not known at this time. Riverside Police have charged Benjamin G. Alvarez, 39 of the 200 block of W. Quincy Street in Riverside with Battery to an Unborn Child and Domestic Battery. Both class A misdemeanors.
