UNIT: We Built a Zoo Lesson Plan Week 2 Wednesday Pythagorean Theorem Learning Target: Use the Pythagorean Theorem

em to solve real world problems (CCSS 8.G.B.7) Warm up Have students discover and prove the Pythagorean Theorem by working through the Exploring the Pythagorean Theorem activity in small groups. Walk around the room help when needed and make sure students are staying on task. Once all groups have finished the worksheet/activity, come back together as a whole class and talk about what we have discovered. Have students practice Split-Page Notetaking in their notebooks and write Pythagorean Theorem on one side, and then the formula and anything else they discovered and want to remember from the activity on the other side. Work through a few examples as a class of applying the Pythagorean Theorem to simple right triangles, and then one story problem example. Give students Using the Pythagorean Theorem at the Zoo handout to work through on their own for the last ten minutes of class. If they dont finish, assign the rest for homework. Exit Slip: Have students write their own Pythagorean Theorem problem and solve it. If they are unable to do this, write down two things they are unclear about from todays lesson (Formative Assessment).
