Chapter 5: Materials

Conductors and insulators

Conductors *Materials that allow electricity to flow through electric conductors. *Materials that conduct heat are heat conductors. *All metals are conductors. *Pencil lead is the only non-metal which is electric conductor.

Insulators *Materials that do not conduct electricity are electric insulators. *Materials that do not conduct heat are heat insulators. *Non-metals such as wood, plastic, glass and rubber are insulators.

Ability of materials to allow light pass through them

Materials that allow light to pass through them. We can see clearly the objects that are behind them. Example:air, water, bottlesand Spectacles lens.

materials that allow some light to pass through them. We cannot see very clearly the objects that are behind them. Objects are blur Example:Tracing paper, sun glasses and some type of pastics.

Translucent

Material that do not allow light to pass through them. We cannot see the objects that are behind them. Example:wood, metal, some type of pastic, books, stones and carbon paper.
