Mask Artist Statement:

For my Art Class Assignment we were told to make a mask representing us, the student, the
individual, a mask representing something about us. I decided to make my mask representing
more of my ancestors or things that trace down to my ancestors. So things that have traced down
to my ancestors is that (first) I am part mexican, mostly mexican in fact (second), I am part
chinese because my ancestors were from china so I decided to add that in there, (lastly) I decided
that my mask had to be a little more extra-ordinary and not just about race so I decided to add in
my mask the fact that I have bad eyesight in one of my eyes because its a genetic kind of thing. I
selected these 3 things (1st mexican 2nd chinese 3rd eyesight) because these are some things that
have been apart of me growing up of course this doesnt define me completely but it gets a basic
or simple idea of me. The mask itself looks to have kind of a monotone or black and white
design with colors surrounding the middle. I think that this mask has kind of a simple festival
kinda look. The colors are just dark green, dark red, and an appealing yellow. I think the eyes
and mouth stand out the most because its something unusual but kind of fits in, the mouth I
think has a different concept from the mask because the horns sticking out have more of a design
thats a little different then the mask. Something I really like about this mask is the place where
the eyes shouldve been instead of having a simple hole for the eyes i used kind of crosses so that
i could have the 5 eyes really stand out.
