Google Earth Project Enhanced Video I nstruction
Title of Learning Experience:
o Designing a Map of a Familiar Area

Grade/Subject:
o First Grade- Ages Six to Seven
o Geography

Learning Outcomes:
o Geography SOL 1.5
The students will construct a simple map of a familiar area, using basic
map symbols in the map legend.

Introduction Strategies Addressed by the Video Clips:
o Meaningful, purposeful, mindful instructional contexts should be established, and
all subsequent instructional strategies should be presented "in context."
o When the learners are initially introduced to the instructional context, efforts
should be made to really gain their attention.
o Learners should be made aware of the purpose of the learning experience.
o The instruction should facilitate the setting of personal goals relative to
succeeding within the impending instructional experience.
o Access to learning scaffolds should be clearly identified, especially procedural
scaffolds (guidance on how to utilize resources and tools, such as how-to sheets,
tutors, introductory remarks and examples from the instructor).

Description of Learning Experience:
o This lesson is based on the Google Earth Instructional Project, and was introduced
by having the students come up to the front of the room, and displaying Google
Earth on the SMART board in front of them, so everyone can see the lesson
clearly. The teacher can then ask the students to identify a familiar place to them
such as the school, stores, their homes, or recreational parks so the teacher can
pull it up on a bigger picture, and the students can see the area from multiple
perspecitives. Once the students are able to see the familiar areas more clearly,
they will be asked to create their own map of the familiar area of their choice,
whichever is most meaningful to them. Once the students have selected the area,
they can create a map of the surrounding elements such as the roads, bodies of
water, and land masses that surround the designation of their choice. Once the
students have created their maps, they can share them with their classmates, so
peer reinforcement can be enforced.

Summary of Google Earth Project Enhanced Video Instruction and The Role of the
Video Introduction:
o I will introduce this lesson by showing the class three videos. The first video will
show the students how to properly read a map, and understand the different
components that a map features. The second video will aid the children in
learning how to create a map of a familiar area to them, so they can identify the
main concepts, as well as understanding the whole concept of the activity in
which they will be partaking in. The third video will reinforce the major concepts
of maps, and creating one that is familiar to them, and unique in its own manner.
Providing the students will pictures of a birds eye view of familiar areas will
allow the students to think outside of the box, and broaden their perspectives.
After the life-like picture is displayed, a drawing of a map will follow it, so the
students can see how they can take a picture and turn it into their own creation to
convey a message. The same ideas will be displayed for the street view pictures
of a familiar area, so the students can see that they can draw their maps from
multiple angles. Towards the end of the lesson, a review will be conducted of the
major concepts that are included on a map such as the title, pictures, words, a key,
and symbols, and pictures of each are included so the students can learn to
recognize and decipher between them.
