Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes
more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The Edpuzzle, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, will truly benefit all learners and follow the Universal
Design for Learning Framework. First off, the Edpuzzle heavily correlates to the Universal Design for
Learning (UDL) principle of engagement. Rather than simply watching an informative content video,
students are provided with interactive questions throughout the video, keeping them engaged, on task,
and providing them with short-term goals for the lesson. Moreover, the Edpuzzle lesson also benefits
various learners, drawing upon the UDL principle of representation. Auditory learners will benefit
from the audio in the video and hearing the information, but the visual learners will enjoy the visual
content addressed in the Edpuzzle. Finally, the Edpuzzle exemplifies the principle of Action and
Expression as the questions posed throughout the video aid the learner in self-assessing, while also
sending the comprehension of the video to the instructor for grading. The students are able to
communicate their learning and express the knowledge they have acquired.

Lesson idea implementation:

First off, the instructor will distribute tablets to the class or laptops to the class. Following this step,

the instructor will capture the attention of the students by playing the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle “3-R”
song by Jack Johnson and having students guess what the song was about. The instructor will then
guide the students to turn to their tablet on go on their Edpuzzle classroom.

(This tool is safe and follows COPPA and FERPA federal laws. The students will be in the teacher’s
classroom, not having to provide any personal or identifiable information.)

Furthermore, the instructor will allow students time to watch the Edpuzzle video and then complete
the questions throughout the video. Then, students will receive a mind map activity page. A sample
Mind Map activity page is listed below.

Students will now be instructed to write the words “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” in the middle circle.
After that is completed, students will draw items they are able to recycle, ideas of how to reduce their
waste, and ideas of how to reuse various objects. The instructor will first show students some of their
own examples. For instance, the instructor may say an idea of reducing waste is to use a water bottle,
not a disposable one. Or, an idea to reuse is to keep the plastic bags from the grocery store and use
them for garbage bags. Likewise, an idea of recycling is to have a recycling bin at home. Students will
then draw their own ideas and submit them to their instructor for feedback.

Reflective Practice:

This lesson will benefit student learning in numerous ways. First, it will benefit auditory, visual, and
hands on learners. Next, it will encourage students to think about tangible examples of applying their
knowledge of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Moreover, this lesson implements technology resources (Edpuzzle) which are beyond basic
productivity tools. This is an introductory lesson for students, so in further lesson plans, other
productivity tools could be provided such as Wakelet or Padlet!
