Projct Information
1. Pro(ide a detailed abstract o/ your proposed honors e)periential learnin& project.
$his summer < ha(e the ama=in& opportunity to tra(el to Philadelphia with Hope 'outh Corps. Hope 'outh Corps
(H'C is part o/ a non>pro/it or&ani=ation H?P,worldwide and is &eared towards helpin& youth /rom all around the
world to ser(e the worlds poor. @hen you are chosen to come on H'C8 you are chosen to be a part o/ a (ery in/luential
leadership team. Philadelphia is just one o/ many site locations and trips that H'C o//ers this year. 1uch o/ Philadelphia
is %nown /or its access to hi&her education8 wealth8 and political in/luence. @hat &oes unnoticed is the area one mile north
o/ the /inancial district8 an area o/ deep po(erty and urban bli&ht. < ha(e the opportunity to see the dramatic and direct
transition between those with plenty and those with little. @hile on H'C8 < will be at Camp H?P, /or Aids in
0chwen%s(ille8 P". "t this camp&round < will be carin& /or and mentorin& children with special needs by en&a&in& my
whole heart to their needs. $he team o/ students on H'C will be leadin& and &uidin& these %ids in acti(ities8 as well as
leadin& them as mentors.$his camp&round will o//er a (ariety o/ acti(ities such as canoein&8 swimmin&8 hi&h =ip line8
archery8 and hi%in&. -y mentorin& these %ids my eyes will be opened to the deep needs o/ those with disabilities. < will
also be able to characteri=e8 learn about8 and utili=e di//erent leadership strate&ies while on this trip. Children with special
needs are o/ten o(erloo%ed8 but my job will be to ma%e sure they /eel lo(ed and appreciated while ha(in& the best time o/
their li(es. <n addition to ser(in& at this camp8 < will spend time with a campus ministry and tour the city. @e will be out
on the streets8 leadin& the way as well share our /aith. $his will be a &reat opportunity to apply a di//erent type o/
leadership style than will be used at Camp H?P, /or Aids.
$ime commitment /or this project will appear in many di//erent styles. <n the be&innin&8 < had to apply and &et
chosen /or this pro&ram. "/ter /illin& out the application8 which included two essays8 < had to wait a /ew wee%s be/ore
hearin& bac%. ?nce < &ot my con/irmation letter8 < put the dates in my calendar and be&an the actual plannin&. Plannin& /or
this trip includes &ettin& a /li&ht to and /rom Philadelphia that matches up with the dates and times reBuested by the H'C
coordinators. "lso to plan /or this trip8 < needed to /ill out this /orm to be able to count it as an honors e)perience. $o
enhance this e)perience8 < plan to %eep a daily journal while on the trip to be able to re/lect in order to &et as much out o/
this e)perience as possible. @hile on the trip8 < will be ser(in& 6:/C8 and < e)pect to &et about 199hrs o/ community
ser(ice while on the trip8 not includin& the plannin& and re/lectin& be/ore and a/ter the trip.

6. Connection to 4earnin& ?utcomes within the Honors $hematic "rea (identi/ied abo(e
Identifies the arious characteristics of a leader in a gien situation!role. $his is one o/ the 4earnin& ?utcomes < will
be wor%in& towards when < am on H'C. Durin& the course o/ my /irst year at UC8 < ha(e learned about the many
aspects o/ bein& a leader8 and < will be able to apply what <(e learned while on my trip while still learnin& what it ta%es
to be a leader. ?ne o/ the thin&s < ha(e learned is that there are di//erent styles o/ leadership8 and di//erent situations
reBuire di//erent styles. -ecause this trip will in(ol(e mentorin& %ids with special needs8 a special %ind o/ compassion
6
and lo(e will be reBuired on my part. < wont be able to lead these %ids the same way < could %ids without special
needs. $hey will reBuire much more patience8 lo(e8 and support. < am loo%in& /orward to learnin& how to lead in this
special style8 because <(e ne(er done somethin& Buite li%e it be/ore. < am sure < will learn about other characteristics
reBuired o/ a leader while < am there. < will ha(e to learn how to pay attention and in(est in each persons particular
needs8 to ma%e sure they are ta%en care o/.
"as the a#ility to relate, communicate and wor$ effectiely with peers. $his is another one o/ the 4earnin& ?utcomes <
will be wor%in& towards while on H'C. -ecause < will be wor%in& at a camp8 < will be wor%in& as a team with other
counselors. $o ma%e sure the camp is run to the best o/ our ability8 it will be a necessity that all o/ the counselors8
mysel/ included8 wor% to&ether in the most e//ecti(e way possible. $o encoura&e this teamwor%8 < plan to e(ery day
ta%e some time to en&a&e with my team. < plan to as% ad(ice on how they are leadin&8 di//erent Bualities they see in
leaders8 what they are learnin&8 etc. < also plan to share di//erent thin&s < will be learnin&8 and by doin& so < will help to
be relatable to the other counselors. </ there are any problem situations that come up8 < will wor% to the best o/ my
ability to wor% them out8 because on this trip the team has to be uni/ied.
%eelops a ision of the future and ac$nowledges the impact of decisions (as applica#le to the indiidual and affiliated
organi&ations). $his is the third 4earnin& ?utcome < will be wor%in& towards while on H'C. -ecause the children at
the camp ha(e special needs8 the /uture /or them is much more un%nown than /or someone without special needs. $his
ma%es the impact o/ any decision < ma%e ha(e much &reater o/ an impact than < will %now. <t is e)tremely important
that as a mentor /or these %ids8 that < constantly be thin%in& o/ them and their /uture. 1any times when people &et older
they remember moments in their li(es where they /elt truly happy8 accepted8 or lo(ed. <t will be my job to ma%e sure
this camp becomes one o/ those moments. <t is also important because this is the second time this particular trip has
been o//ered. $o ensure the success o/ trips to come8 < need to be analy=in& the trip as < &o. < will need to be writin&
down the di//erent ways the trip is wor%in&8 as well as the ways it could impro(e.
< belie(e that by /ocusin& on these D 4earnin& ?utcomes8 < will learn much more about leadership and the di//erent
Bualities reBuired o/ a leader. < will then be able to apply what < learn bac% in Cincinnati in the /all when < am in
classes8 and in the sprin& on Co>op. Durin& both o/ these times < will be wor%in& in teams8 and so it is important that <
carry with me what < learn.
D. Connection to Eoals and "cademic $heories (include re/erence list8 as appropriate
". $his trip will ha(e a &reat contribution to my /uture academic8 pro/essional8 and personal &oals. <
belie(e that leaders are e(erywhere8 and that e(eryone is a leader8 re&ardless i/ they %now it or not.
"cademically and pro/essionally8 leaders are constantly reBuired to ma%e sure teams wor% to the best
o/ their ability. 4eaders are needed to ma%e sure projects &et completed in the most e//ecti(e way
with the most e//ecti(e results. @hile on this trip8 < plan to learn di//erent characteristics that < will be
able to use while wor%in& on teams. 0ome o/ these teams include lab wor% (in ?r&anic Chemistry8
and the teamwor% that will be reBuired while < am on Co>op. < am loo%in& /orward to broadenin& my
scope o/ what a leader is8 and the di//erent styles associated with leadership. $his will ma%e me more
prepared /or the di//erent situations that will come up both in school and at wor%. Personally8 < am
loo%in& to possibly becomin& a leader in the ministry < am in(ol(ed in on campus. -ecause
leadership is so broad8 < will be able ta%e what < learn on this trip8 and apply it to my li/e
academically8 pro/essionally8 and personally.
-. $he theories o/ leadership < will be applyin& to my trip are based o// o/ 4eadership @ith 'ou. < chose
this resource because it tal%s about di//erent styles and theories o/ leadership. < ha(e been learnin&
about di//erent styles o/ leadership o(er the past year. -e/ore8 < just thou&ht that !leaders were
leaders#. < had no idea that there were many di//erent styles8 and those styles should be used and
applied in di//erent situations.
?ne o/ the theories < will be incorporatin& is *iedlers Contin&ency $heory. *iedlers $heory states
that the e//ecti(eness o/ leadership are based o// o/ three thin&s: the positional power o/ the leader8
the relationship between the leader and the /ollowers8 and how clearly de/ined the job o/ the leader is.
$o ensure the e//ecti(eness o/ my trip8 < will need to apply these three thin&s. 1y job will be outlined
D
clearly be/ore and when < arri(e. -ut the power < hold and the relationships < de(elop will be up to
me. < need to be a leader who holds power8 to hold order and/or discipline as necessary. -ut at the
same time8 not too much power that there is no room /or &rowth and learnin&. -ut < belie(e the most
important part will be the relationships < de(elop. < will need to ma%e sure < &et to %now e(eryone on
my team on a personal le(el8 as well as those < am mentorin&. $his will encoura&e stron& unity
amon&st the counselors8 and trust and support /or the %ids.
"nother theory < will be applyin& to this trip is the 0ituational 4eadership $heory based o// o/ Paul
Hersey and Aenneth -lanchard. $heir theory spea%s o/ the di//erent styles o/ leadership: tellin&8
sellin&8 participatin&8 and dele&atin&. < belie(e at some point on the trip < will use each o/ these styles8
because di//erent styles are used /or di//erent situations. ?ne o/ the bi&&est styles o/ this theory < will
be usin& is participatin&. "s < mentor these %ids8 < will be doin& di//erent acti(ities with them8 not just
hostin& to or&ani=in& the acti(ities. "s < mentor them8 < will also act li%e a coach8 and try to &et them
to ma%e &oals or come to conclusions on their own. @hile on this trip8 < will also be usin& the tellin&
and dele&atin& styles. $here will be times when < need to dele&ate acti(ities or jobs to others to ma%e
the trip more e//ecti(e.
$o be a leader /or this speci/ic population8 children with special needs8 will reBuire di//erent aspects
o/ leadership than are usually thou&ht o/. $o be a leader here will reBuire more patience8 &uidance8
and compassion then is usually e)pected. $hese children ha(e been li(in& li(es (ery di//erent than my
own8 and that will become increasin&ly clear the more time < will spend with them. Drawin& on my
interactions o(er the years with children with special needs will help me when preparin& /or this trip.
< will draw on those memories to help me with each o/ my interactions8 especially when it comes to
playin& &ames and tal%in& with them. "lso to help me prepare8 < will be counselin& at other camps
that are loosely related to this one. @hile the %ids at these camps do not ha(e special needs8 < will &et
trainin& on !camp li/e# and camp sa/ety that is rele(ant at any camp. < will also &et trainin& on how to
handle di//erent situations and will &et accustomed to bein& responsible /or a &roup o/ %ids8 both o/
these < will be able to ta%e to my trip to Philadelphia.

-ecause < am in the en&ineerin& pro&ram here at UC8 < %new this was &oin& to be the last /ree summer < would
ha(e be/ore < &raduated because /or the ne)t summers < will be either in school or on Co>op. -ecause this is my
last summer8 < wanted to ma%e sure < was able to do as much as possible. "lmost as soon as < was able to8 <
applied /or this trip. @hen you apply /or H'C8 there are many di//erent locations you can choose8 and this one
was actually at the bottom o/ the list. -ut once < &ot accepted /or this trip8 < /ound out what < was &oin& to be
doin&. +ow8 < am e)tremely ecstatic to be &oin&F < was especially happy when < /ound out < would be counselin&
/or special needs %ids. Erowin& up8 my classrooms in school always happened to ha(e a special needs child in
them. *or some reason8 < always &ra(itated towards them and would try to help and be/riend them. ?ne child8 her
name was Caroline8 also li(ed in my nei&hborhood. *or years < would sit towards the /ront o/ the bus8 where she
sat8 so < would be able to tal% to her. "s the years went on8 she would be in other classes o/ mine alon& as well as
on my bus. <t is because o/ her < ha(e such a heart /or %ids with special needs. < ha(e been e)posed to many
special needs %ids &rowin& up8 so &oin& on this trip is especially per/ect. < /eel li%e < ha(e been trainin& my whole
li/e /or thisF < am loo%in& /orward to applyin& the care and nurturin& < pro(ided to Caroline to other %ids at the
camp. <n addition8 < ha(e counseled and attended my church camp /or many years. "lso8 &rowin& up my /amily
went campin& multiple times a year. $his ma%es me (ery com/ortable bein& a counselor at a camp8 and

$o enhance my e)perience while on H'C8 < will %eep a daily journal. <n this journal8 < will document my di//erent
interactions with the %ids8 the di//erent aspects o/ leadership < will be learnin& and applyin&8 as well as sel/>
e(aluation. -y %eepin& this journal8 < will be able to &o bac% and see how my thin%in& and learnin& pro&ressed
throu&hout the trip8 and will easily be able to see how much < learn. < will be able to call upon the e(ents o/

@hile a daily journal will help me re/lect8 < belie(e that to help other understand my journey on this trip a (isual
aspect is necessary. $here/ore8 < will also %eep a photo journal to &o alon& with the written one. $his will help
illustrate the di//erent thin&s < am learnin&. < will be ta%in& photos o/ the %ids8 and mysel/ with the %ids8 to help
hi&hli&ht this particular area o/ Philadelphia. -ecause this is the more impo(erished area o/ Philadelphia8 the
photo&raphs will help brin& awareness8 not only to the drastic di//erence within the city o/ Philadelphia8 but also
to children with special needs. People that ha(e these needs are o/ten o(erloo%ed in society8 and it will be my job
to brin& them to li&ht. ,ach one o/ them is e)tremely special8 and it will by my job to tell the world. $o show the
drastic di//erence < will ta%e pictures on our !tour o/ the city# day8 as well as at the camp&round. < belie(e this will
help illustrate the di//erence in the city.
