ABSTRACT
This study examines the size distributions of particulate bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(p-PAHs) emitted from rice straw open burning in combustion chamber, agricultural region and released
during smoke crisis in Lampang province. The particle-PAHs samples were collected on quartz fiber
filters by an Eight-stage Cascade Impactor having difference particle size fractions between 9.0-5.8, 5.84.7, 4.7-3.3, 3.3-2.1, 2.1-1.1, 1.1-0.7, 0.7-0.4 and < 0.4 m particle diameter at a flow rate of 28.3 l/min.
PAHs samples were analyzed using solvent-extraction followed by GC-MS/SIM for 16 PAHs. The results
showed that size distributions of particulate matter and p-PAHs were highest in fine particle size range of
0.4-0.7 m from the rice straw burning in combustion chamber (28.7 % and 30.2 %) and agricultural
region after harvesting (33.5 % and 37.4 %). During smoke crisis periods, the size distribution of
particulate matter was highest in fine particle size range of less than 0.4 m (37.9 %) containing pPAHs 50.5 %. The size distribution of 3-4 ring PAHs were higher than 5-6 ring PAHs in the rice straw
burning in chamber and agricultural region. However, size distribution of 3-4 ring PAHs were lower than
5-6 ring PAHs during smoke crisis period. The characteristic ratios of InP/BgP+InP were 0.56, 0.51 and
0.45 on particulate matters emitted from chamber test, agricultural region and during smoke crisis period,
respectively.
