Solids, Liquids and

Gases

Solids
Timber, from wood, is a solid. It is used for
building furniture. Timber is hard, it retains its
shape. Timber is strong so it can hold weight.
Timber is soft enough to be cut with a saw and
screwed or nailed together.
Solids
Flour is a solid. It is actually lots of small solid
particles. The small particles mean flour can be
mixed with liquids for cooking. The liquid mixes in-
between the small particles. Flour is dry. Liquid can
be added in any amount according to what kind of
mixture you need. does not flow like a liquid.
Solids
Metal is a solid. It is hard and heavy. It does
not change shape. It can be melted to a liquid
at very high temperatures to make different
things like axe heads. It is cooled to a solid in
the desired shape or form. It can strike and cut
things like timber, which arent as hard and
heavy.
Liquids
Water is a liquid. Water flows easily so it can
move through pipes and small holes like
shower heads. Water is wet and flows off our
bodies so it is able to clean us.
Liquids
Milk is a liquid. Milk is wet and runny. Milk fills
its container. Milk can be used as a liquid in
cooking, to mix in between smaller solid
particles like sugar and flour. Milk is a drink. It
provides fluid to our bodies by pouring into
our mouths and down our throats.
Liquids
Liquid soap is a.liquid. It fills its container. It
flows or pours. Liquid soap can be used in
dispensers. It can be pumped onto hands.
This is more hygienic than shared bars of
solid soap.
Gases
Helium is a gas that is lighter than air. Gases
fill their container, in this case balloons. Helium
gas fills balloons to make them float in air.
Gases
Oxygen is a gas. Oxygen is in the air around us.
Our lungs are made to breathe air and absorb
the oxygen from it. As a gas, it fills its container
(the air). Because it is all around us, we can
breathe everywhere.
Gases
Air is a gas. Vacuum cleaners use air. A motor
in the vacuum cleaner sucks air in. The
vacuum cleaner sucks it in and blows it out
through a filter, trapping solid dust particles.
Air flows through the vacuum cleaner to fill its
container (the room or house).
