The Katana is a single edged sword that is as old as
Japanese history itself. Mainly used by the Samurai (Japanese warriors) the Katana was otherwise passed down generation to generation by Japanese families as a trophy or family crest. The Katana is two or more shaku which is roughly 70cm long anything between two or one shaku is considered a small sword. anything below one shaku is considered a dagger or knife.
The Katana is made up of three different parts; the blade, the pommel and the guard.
The blade of the katana is the second longest part of the katana to make, the procedure takes two to four days to forge the metal. The metal in the blade is called jewel steel.
The pommel of the katana it the longest part to make. To forge the pommel would take two to three days but then the owner would have his own symbol engraved into the pommel of the sword this would take two days. The Pommel is roughly 25cm to 30cm long.
The Guard is the shortest part to make taking only a day to make. The Guard sits between the pommel and blade and helps them to stay together. It also protects the user hands from sliding the pommel down onto the blade.
