SUBSTATION

The Substation is an Electrical installation where power is controlled at
different voltage levels for transmission & distribution purpose. Substations
transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse using transformers.
Between the generating station and consumer, electric power may flow
through several substations at different voltage levels. Substations are named
as 220/132kV Substation, 400/220kv Substation, 132/33kV Substation.

CLASSIFICATION OF VOLTAGE LEVELS:

As per IE Rule 2(1)(a) voltage levels are classified as (with latest amendments)

TYPE VOLTAGE
Low voltage 250/415 V
Medium voltage 650V, 3.3kV, 6.6kV
High voltage 11kV, 33kV, 66kV
Extra high voltage 110kV, 132kV,220kV
Ultra high voltage 400kV,800kV AC & 500kV HVDC

SUBSTATIONS ARE CLASSIFIED AS BELOW:

BASED ON VOLTAGE LEVELS:
A.C. Substation: EHV, HV, MV, LV
D.C. Substation: HVDC Substation

BASED ON LOCATION:
Out Door
Indoor

BASED ON CONFIGURATION:
Conventional air insulated outdoor substation or
Gas Insulated Substation (GIS)
Composite substations having combination of the above two
