Introducing the play: Act 1

Shakespeare borrowed the characters of Theseus and

Hippolyta from Greek Mythology. Theseus was the

national hero of Athens. He was a friend of Hercules
and the survivor of many adventures, including his
slaying of the Minotaur (half man and half bull).
Hippolyta was Queen of the Amazons, a group of
female warriors. Theseus took her prisoner and
married her.

Before you read

Answer the following writing prompt:
What is the best way to resolve a conflict?

Use two examples from your own life (an internal conflict

and an external conflict).

Express the right way to handle a conflict, and the wrong

way.
