Overview of BTPS

BTPS MEETS MORE THAN 24% OF DELHIS

ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION
INSTALLED CAPACITY = 720 MW
DERATED CAPACITY = 705 MW (3x95 + 2x210MW)
OWNED BY GOVT. OF INDIA, MINISTRY OF
POWER.
BEING MANAGED BY NTPC FOR THE LAST 26
YEARS SINCE 1st APRIL 1978.
NTPC adjudged as the 3rd best employer in India

NTPC Badarpur

BTPS was conceived in 1965 to meet the growing

electricity demand of Northern Region.

The site construction activities started in 1968.

The plant became operational with the

commissioning of its first unit on 26th July 1973, 2nd
unit in ;74 , 3rd unit in 75 , 4th unit in 78 &
in 81.

5th unit

Basic Principle
There are basically three main units of a thermal power plant:
1. Steam Generator or Boiler
2. Steam Turbine
3. Electric Generator

Electricity from Coal

BOILER MAINTAINENCE DEPARTMENT

Internally Fire Tube Boiler- 52m height, 60mm diameter.
Powder Coal is air blown into furnace forming the fire required
Water changes into steam at 370 Degree Celsius.
The saturated steam introduced into superheat tubes as the exit from
the furnace.
The superheated steam goes to the 210 MW turbine generator to

generate electricity.

AUXILLARIES OF THE BOILER

Furnace
Boiler Drum

Water Walls
Reheater
Superheater
Economizer
Air pre-heater
Pulvariser

PLANT AUXILLARY MAINATINENCE

It consists of 6 sub- departments:

Water circulation system- a) Natural Circulation system

b) Controlled Circulation system
Ash Handling plant- a) Hydraulic ash handling plant
b) Fly ash collection
Water Treatment Plant- a) Pre- treatment section
b) Demineralization section
Draught system
Fans- a) ID Fans
b) FD Fans
Compressor House-a) Air Drying Unit
b) Air Compressor

TURBINE MAINATAINENCE DEPARTMENT

Two types of turbines are used in BTPS, i.e., 95 MW and 210 MW.
Generally compounding of turbine is done by using an IP turbine.
Specifications of turbine used:
Tandem compound 3 cylinder reheated type

Power= 210 MW
Number of stages= 12 in HP, 11 in IP and 8 in LP.
Type of governing: Nozzle governing

Vacuum Systems
Condensers: 2 for 210 MW at exhaust of LP Turbine.

Ejectors: Total 3 ejectors are used connected

to the condenser.
CW Pumps: It is used to pump water to
the boiler. The pump system is equipped with
LP heaters, deaeriators.
