Title of Lesson: Colorful Ice

Targeted Domain: Cognitive

Learning Center: Childrens Home + Aid


Age of Child (ren): 3-5

Goal: Teach children what happens when you freeze water and the effect of why it melts

Objective: Children will make food coloring ice and learn the cause and effect of frozen water
and melted water

Transition Plan: Teacher will explain to children what happens when water freezes, why it
turns into ice, what happens when it melts, and why it melt

Procedure: Children will fill ice trays with water, add food coloring, and place in freezer
over night. Meanwhile teacher will fill water table with pre-made colorful ice for children to play
in during free play. Next day teacher will pull out frozen ice and go over the cause of the frozen
water, and the effect of the melted ice that was in the water table

Advanced Preparation: Teacher will explain to children the properties of water and why
it freezes and why it melts. Teacher will have pre-made colorful ice filled in water table 5 min
before free play. Teacher will include shovels, buckets, and other play toys in the water table

List Materials: ice trays, multi-color food coloring, freezer

Developmental Benefits: fine motor, sensory, science, cause and effect, social, color
recognition, creativity, patience

Future Plans: Teacher will add all the cold blooded water animals that lives in the sea to the
water table
