SERVICE PROGRAM GETS TEENS ACTIVE AND GOING GREEN

Boise Watershed provides students a great summer opportunity to volunteer and further skills!
Each summer a group of ten or more Green Teen volunteers between the ages of 14 and 18 are chosen
to participate and lead watershed programs. Green Teens assist with activities at the Boise Watershed, as
well as coordinate science demonstrations and crafts.
The Boise Watersheds Environmental Education Coordinator, Aimee Hughes thinks being a Green
Teen is a wonderful opportunity to learn and teach others about the importance of water in our daily
lives, It gives teens the chance to develop their communication skills and ability to work with groups
and people of all ages, said Hughes, who is currently accepting applications for the summer of 2013.
Its a fun, summer volunteer opportunity.
Volunteers partake in teaching alongside the Boise WaterShed staff during weekly Wednesday visitor
programs throughout the summer. Students will lead activities in the classroom, on the Boise River, at
area ponds and along tours of the West Boise Wastewater Treatment Facility. Green Teens also
contribute to WaterShed Weekend programs held every third Saturday of each month, as well as
outreach events within the community. Boise WaterShed visitors are primarily children and their
families.
Our Green Teens are ambassadors for our free programming out at the Boise Watershed. They are
given the opportunity to develop and design the crafts and activities during our summer events, all of
which promote good water stewardship in the Treasure Valley, said Hughes.
By volunteering in the Green Teen program students gain valuable communication skills and are able to
teach hands-on lessons and crafts to visitors of the Boise WaterShed. The teen volunteers collaborate on
a team service project that applies environmental knowledge; and are challenged to develop an
educational activity or science demonstration to teach the public.
Green Teens also work on educational displays, the water-wise garden and the public library.
