Important notes and dates:
This afternoon was our walking field trip to the VA Historical Society. Thank you to
Winnie Brown, Dawn Schick, Orna Weinstein, Janet Chenoweth, Katherine Smothers and
Alex Coppola for chaperoning the trip!
On Thursday morning we will watch Theatrix perform Peter Pan.
On Thursday afternoon from 2-3pm we will have a special economics lesson in our
classroom.
We started our new unit on Native Americans last week. We will be learning about three
tribes and regions. We started learning about the Powhatan Indians of the Eastern
Woodland Region. On Friday we will have an assessment on the Powhatan Indians.
Students will bring home their Powhatan Indians booklet on Wednesday to help them
study. They need to know the region they lived in (Eastern Woodlands), what their homes
were made of, their occupations, and what kind of transportation they used. If they
reread the booklet they should be prepared for the test.
This past Thursday we enjoyed reading with our Book Buddies (Ms. Yanceys 4th grade
class). We will read with them again on Friday afternoon.
The next PTA meeting is on Tuesday the 16th at 6:30pm.
Please check out the website www.mrsperkins.com to help your child review sight words.
If you click on Dolch Word Lists you will find power points that are similar to the PALS
test as well as printable flash cards. Second graders should know all the words beginning
with the Pre-primer list through the 2nd grade list. They will be given the mid-year PALS
test in January.
We have been working on math fluency (addition and subtraction). If your child is unable
to use Reflex math or the class website, please make sure they study their addition and
subtraction facts in another way.
Have a great week!

WORD STUDY HOMEWORK

Monday: Introduce and sort new words
Homework: Students cut out the words and sort (and say) three times. Store in
a plastic bag and use them again each night this week.
Tuesday: Blind Sort
Homework: Your child will sort the words again like yesterday. Then place the
category words (underlined words) on the table. You will then scramble the words
and call them out one at a time. Your child will point to the category in which the
word belongs. Hand the word to your child to place in that column. Check the
sort.
Wednesday: Speed Sort
Homework: Place the category words (underlined words) on the table. Scramble
the rest of the words. Time your child as he/she sorts the words. Check the sort
and add one second for each incorrectly sorted word. *Rescramble the words,
leaving the same headings (category words) on the table out. Time your child a
second time. Your child should try to beat his/her first time.
Thursday: Writing Sort
Homework: Call out the words one at a time as your child writes the words in
categories on paper under the correct category words (underlined words). Your
child should not be able to see the words before writing them. This will help
prepare for Fridays spelling test. (If needed, write words three times each.)

Friday: Students will be assessed on the week's words. Transfer words

(words with similar spelling patterns) will be included on the assessments.
Students will also write 3 sentences using their Word Study words for a
writing mechanics grade.
