RESUM
In the Library of Sleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul there is one very
important source of Serbian spoken language of XV/XVI century. It is a
manuscript of a text book based on simple phrases and sentences written in
Arabic, Persian, Greek and Serbian using only Arabic letters. The text book
belonged to the private library of Mahmut I (1730-1754).
The book was probably used for education of sultans` sons or other high
ranked officials in the Ottoman Empire. The initial language was Arabic and the
phrases were simply translated into the other three languages.
This is the oldest known source of Serbian written in Arabic script so far.
As it consists of phrases of the spoken language it is particularly valuable since
the spoken language was rarely used in the Serbian medieval literature.
This paper brings the Cyrillic transcription of the whole text in Serbian
written in Arabic script with necessary comments.
