This document describes a second grade science lesson on the life cycle of plants that uses the beyond-the-basic productivity tool Timeliner. Students will observe sunflower seeds grow over months and then use Timeliner to create a visual representation of the plant life cycle. They will analyze plant life cycles, enter the data into Timeliner, and create a slideshow, timeline, or organizer to demonstrate their understanding. This lesson incorporates higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy and allows students to direct their own learning with technology.

Grade Level: Second Grade Content Area: Science Life Cycle of a Plant Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tool Used: Timeliner Standards Addressed: S2L1.
Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:
Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Description of how to implement in the class: The teacher will introduce the activity by discussing life cycle and give different examples (people, animals, and plant). For a visual effect, sunflower seeds will be put into soil and the students will observe over a few months. The information of the life cycle of a plant will be used for the activity. Remembering from the cycle of the sunflower, the information on plants will be added into Timeliner by the students. Students will analyze the information and begin creating. The students will research information from Timeliner on how the sunflowers life cycle compares to other plants. Students can make the life cycle into a slideshow, time line, or organizer. The information should include: the cycles and their names, what happens in each cycle, and an animation to go along with it. Once all the date has be entered, the students will save a copy and the teacher will evaluate the students understanding. Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This activity is at a level 4 because students are using higher level of Blooms taxonomy. They are remembering the life cycle from the sunflower, understanding the cycle, applying the information to Timeliner, analyzing what happens to the plant, evaluating the cycle, and creating the Timeliner. Students are using technology in the classroom to do this project. This is a student directed project with little assistance from teacher. Students can determine which activity; slide show, organizer, or timeline. The life cycle is a real world application. Description of the sample BBPT file provided: There is a picture of the life cycle of plant and how Timeliner looks using an organizer. Other comments about your proposed BBPT Activity: Timeliner can be used for all ages. It is effective and simple to use and allows students to learn a lot of information.
