The conditional tense is used to talk about what you would

or could do. It helps you talk about what would happen
under certain conditions and to make polite requests.

A. Construction 1. Regular verbs a. Leave the verb in the infinitive form.

! verb with the -ar, -er, -ir ending attached

b. Add the appropriate conditional tense ending.

! There is only one set of conditional tense

endings for all -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.

B. Other uses of the Conditional 1. Questions/Requests - The conditional tense can be

used to make polite requests: Asking someone if
s/he would or could do something. It is also used
to politely inquire as to someones preferences.

!Would you visit the elderly, please?

Visitaras a los ancianos, por favor?

!Would you like to go to the community center?

Te gustara ir al centro de la comunidad?

2. Conditional of probability - Used to wonder aloud about

the likelihood or possible occurrence of a situation in
the past.

!I wonder where they were.

Dnde estaran ellos?

They were probably at the soup kitchen.

Estaran en el comedor de beneficencia.

!Who do you suppose he was?

Quin sera l?

He was probably the other candidate for mayor.

(l) Sera el otro candidato para alcalde.
