Tutorial 3 (Steel)
Tension Members
Data for Group: 1
(1) A single unequal angle 100 x 75 x 10 mm is used as tension member connected to 12mm
gusset plate with M16 bolts. Determine the design axial tension and number of bolts
required, if
a) The gusset is connected to the 100mm leg
b) The gusset is connected to the 75mm leg.
Assume edge distance of 30mm and pitch distance of 50mm. Assume Fe410 steel angle
and 4.6 grade bolts.
(2) A tension member consists of two angles 90 x 90 x 8 mm bolted to 10mm gusset one on
each side using single rows of bolt and tack bolted. Determine the maximum load that the
member can carry. What will be the load carrying capacity if the angles are connected on
the same side of gusset?
(3) Design a tie member in a bracing system consisting of a single angle to carry a factored
tensile force of 210 kN. Also determine number of bolts required to resist the required
tensile force. Assume Fe410 steel angle and 4.6 grade bolts.
(4) The main tie of the roof truss has to carry a load of 150 kN. Design a suitable angle
section to resist this load. Also design the welded connection for the member. Assume
Fe410 grade steel.

section to resist this load. Also design the welded connection for the member. Assume
Fe410 grade steel.
